Gooloogong Progress & Promotion Association (GPPA) –new projects to kick off the year It has taken a lot of hard work and hours to set up the GPPA but now with a constitution we can start trading! We must remember whilst getting all the paperwork in order we have also kicked some goals; Improved liaison with Cowra Council and receiving progress updates on all issues raised at the Council community meetings, our Bridge naming, coordinating the Bridge walk (signage is being designed at the moment!), taking on the coordination of Tidy Towns, our mobile phone tower is scheduled to be completed in the third quarter of this year, and we have been coordinating our Australia Day Citizen of the Year awards. Looking forward, everyone is now keen to get focused on the projects initially identified at the town meeting such as town infrastructure (a retirement home, a swimming pool), ensuring our school is able to combat any future small school closures, tourism opportunities… our list went on! Dream big for our little town and let’s try and make it happen! So if you have a bit of spare time (or are prepared to spare a bit of time!); have an interest in a project or an idea please come along to the next meeting and be part of it: WEDNESDAY 22 MARCH 2017, 7.30PM AT THE WAR MEMORIAL HALL It would be great if all Committees in town could put the GPPA on their meeting agenda and nominate a rep to send along – that way we can improve the communication between all our groups in town.

Mini Olympics - Friday 10th February, 2017 - On Friday 10th Feb Gooloogong Public School had two special instructors conduct a Mini Olympics, they were Trent Reynolds – Western Region School Sports Officer and David Telfer from Be Fit Be Skilled. Only 5 Western Region Schools out of 200 were lucky enough to have had this opportunity. From the moment they arrived with their equipment the children were engaged Flags adorned our COLA – Germany, Canada, Britain and Sweden to name a few. Countries were announced, anthems were played. Children held the flags high as they walked down our front entrance. Everyone cheered. Izabella read the pledge, Lucius lit the cauldron!!!Wow what an opening ceremony! Then the games commenced. Despite the heat we were able to complete enough games to really say we held the Olympics at Goolie.

On Friday 17th our school joined the other Small Schools in our area for our annual Swimming Carnival. Our children did us proud. At the end of the day four of our students (Izabelle Willis, Lucius Oldfield, Archie & Harry McDonald – pic over the page) were chosen to represent us at the District Carnival which was held on Wednesday 22nd February. Harry McDonald was again a winner and now goes onto Region at Dubbo. Congratulations to all our students who participated in both days. FUND RAISING continues with our trusty Snow Cone Machine and BBQ at the Goolie Markets every 2nd month. This has been a great money raising effort with funds going towards the annual school excursion and much needed equipment around the school. We are currently fund raising for Soft Fall for under the play equipment. Thank you to everyone who supports our stall. And a special Thank You to the Australia Day / Park Committee for their donation of sausages and bread for our stall. FREE NEWSLETTER COMPILED BY THE GOOLOOGONG LOG CABIN Landcare News March 2017 Well, we have certainly been having some extraordinary weather! Hopefully there won’t be too many more days in the 40’s! It seems quite a long time ago now but in December Landcare ran three successful seed collecting workshop days. We stopped by at the Goolie School’s native garden to identify some local plant species (and be amazed by the lush growth of the plants we have put in as well as the weeds! Sorry Charlie!) then headed out to find our target species along the roadsides. We collected some very healthy seeds and some interesting varieties. By the time you read this we will have had a follow up workshop about seed preparation and propagation. Some seeds, for example the wattles, need to be soaked in boiling water before planting, while others need their seed coats nicked with nail clippers! Thank goodness some just can be put straight into the potting mix!

The first Landcare meeting of the year was another inspiring farm visit. Thanks Alan and Ann Maree! It was a beautiful moonlit evening to sit out on the lovely lawn. It sounds as though another busy year is ahead of us. An amazing achievement already this year was the fencing of the RMS tree plantings at the Country Club. Congratulations to the great team involved! Getting out there between Christmas and New Year is really impressive! Thanks particularly to Phil Squire for getting the whole project organized so quickly. Much thanks also to Matt Dowd of Dowd Rural Contracting and to Allan Gray Rural Supplies for all your assistance as well.

Cut out this advert and bring it with you to the shop to receive $10 off any purchase of $50 or more!!!! Now through 11 March 2017

The next Landcare meeting will be Wednesday 8th March. Hope to see you there! Photo : Tracee and Catherine collecting some of a very heavy crop of Acacia genistifolia seed. Also called Early Wattle this is a lovely spikey shrub that has masses of pale blossom in mid winter and provides wonderful protection for small birds
