GOOLOOGONG COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER

Mobile phone tower for Gooloogong Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has announced 18 mobile phone towers for Hume, including one for Gooloogong. “This is a great result, amongst the highest number of any electorate in Australia. We have lobbied long and hard for this – and the Government has listened. We will be dramatically improving mobile phone coverage across a vast area of the electorate and I am delighted to be able to share such good news,” Mr Taylor said. The first base stations will be built in late 2015 and the full programme rolled out over three years. Mr Taylor visited Gooloogong earlier this year and held an information session in the park to talk to residents and hear their concerns for the electorate. Gooloogong will host ‘The Big Lift’ on the 4th and 5th of July Forty university students are visiting our community to volunteer their help with community projects around the town. This is a ‘pay it forward’ initiative that the students are committed to, helping with genuine community projects throughout the state. Gooloogong was lucky to have been chosen. We have a number of groups involved on the Sunday, when the work begins at 8am until 12 noon. The Log Cabin, The War Memorial Hall, Kangarooby Landcare, Gooloogong Public School, The Cemetery, Gooloogong Rural Fire Brigade and the Racecourse Trust. If you would like to be a part of any of the projects and offer some of your volunteer time, meet at the park/log cabin on Sunday morning 5th July prior to 8am and join in the community atmosphere. The community are cooking a roast lamb meal on the Saturday night and pumpkin soup for their lunch on the Sunday. If you would like to stay around for lunch please bring your lunch with you. If you would like to offer any assistance with the food, please talk to Ann-Maree Watson 6344 8282. For any enquiries regarding the weekend please contact Kylie Reeves 0427 448 371.

Gooloogong Mixed Nuts Craft Group Gooloogong Mixed Nuts is a group of ladies from Gooloogong to Merriganowry, from a variety of interests and walks of life, who share a passion for fibre! Not only do we knit, crochet and spin but we support and guide each other in our various individual projects. We have recently enjoyed a mini workshop on needle felted landscapes and are looking forward to upcoming projects involving wet felting. In response to a request from Thailand, our members are also currently involved in a project to knit hats for the Buddhist monks and nuns. Gooloogong is a strong wool producing area and we especially enjoy the opportunity to create beautiful things from our own, locally produced, wool. Any small donations would be gratefully accepted. We would like to extend our thanks to Charlie and Maria Niven for their support through their kind donation of alpaca wool which has been an asset. Mixed Nuts meet on Tuesdays, between 9am and 12pm at the Memorial Clubrooms. The cost is $5 which covers our rent and a scrumptious morning tea lovingly prepared by our members. Anyone is welcome (however thank you for understanding this group is not suitable for children). Thanks, Gooloogong Mixed Nuts

Landcare news So the shortest day of the year has passed, on the 22nd, and now the sunrise is heading back towards the East. Spring is on the way! Sunday 5th July sees 40 students from the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) coming to our village as part of “The Big Lift” tour. A group of uni students get on a bus during their mid year break and head out of the big smoke to work with community organizations in small towns on whatever projects they need help with. From the Big Lift website… “We hope to foster a sense of civic duty and leadership in our participants, by giving them an opportunity to step out of the classroom and give back to the community in a practical way.” The kids get a glimpse of life outside the city and over the great divide and see that people actually live reasonable lives out here! It’s got to be good thing and an opportunity for us to use some enthusiastic labour. Various local groups are dividing up the troops. Landcare will plant a line of trees and shrubs on land beside the road over the bridge up towards the silo. This is part of our Reconnecting Woodlands theme and will use some of the RMS plants. Thank you to long term Landcare member Rosemary Parker for her co-operation. We will also extend the Native Garden at the Public School. Thank you Mr Smith for letting us onto school grounds during the holidays. We will have the new area ready for the Goolie kids to plant another shrub during this year’s Tree Giveaway. Speaking of which, Sunday 26th July, the Tree giveaway will be at the Memorial Park again, 10am til 12. Please come along and collect your free trees and shrubs, have a chat and a cup of tea or coffee and most importantly one of Vera’s famous pikelets cooked fresh on the spot! There will be information and displays available to browse through. Come and find your house or property on our lovely big aerial photographs. The next Landcare meeting will be Wednesday 8th July at the Memorial Rooms at 7pm. Everyone welcome. Any queries please ring Tracee on 63448270 or Ruth on 63448256 2
