Students Speak Up On Community Matters It’s one of the highlights of the Council’s meeting agenda. Each year senior student representatives from Molong, Yeoval and Canowindra Central Schools get to address Cabonne Councillors. Amid the thank you’s and wish lists there is always a strong message to Council on what is on the mind of students as far as community facilities and needs are concerned. The state of the roads usually gets a run - but this year it was a range of issues, and the Councillors were genuinely impressed. From Canowindra Central School, Tim Middleton and Emily Price praised support given to Youth Week activities, the new filtered water bubbler in the park and the skate park. On the wish list are much needed gym facilities for the sports minded community, refurbishment of the basketball courts
and repairs to the footpaths they travel on to and from school. With only months until the next Annual Show, the showground could also do with new toilets - to avoid costly hire of temporary ones for big events. From Molong, Ellie Bryce and Liam Bridge raised the public toilet issue again - seeking improvements to the dark unappealing facilities. From Yeoval, Courtney Cusack and Darby Tremain pleaded for some form of public transport in the school holidays to take students to Orange and / or Dubbo. It became clear that kids without licences or wheels can feel stranded in the town. So there you are - the kids have spoken. Cut this out and pin it on the wall.

Dear Editor, Recent statistics from the Royal Life Saving Society have shown that NSW recorded the highest number of drowning deaths from 2002 to 2012, with 246 people sadly drowning in a creek, river or stream over the ten year period. As a personal injury lawyer and president of Dixon Park Surf Life Saving Club, I am a strong advocate for water safety and have seen people end up with injuries, sometimes permanent, that were caused by poor judgement when engaging in water-related activities. We all need to be cautious when entering a river, stream or creek and be mindful that there can be strong currents and deep channels which can quickly take even the strongest of swimmers by surprise. The water safety message needs to be spread far and wide so that we can continue to enjoy our waterways safely.

Kelly came home to Cowra last Saturday after heart surgery to replace a valve and repair another at RPA. Six weeks in Strathfield private to recuperate on antibiotics to make sure that the “bug” that did the damage won’t come back. Kelly has lost a lot of weight but was last seen eating a horse! (Or was that “eating like a horse!”) Get well soon.

Kids Swap A Day At School For Reading The Community Reading Day was held last Friday, 23rd May at the Memorial Park in Gaskill Street & Services Club Hall. The Canowindra Community Reading Day aimed to give parents, grandparents and carer’s ideas and activities to help their child or grandchild develop their literacy skills. It helps them develop great literacy skills through simple everyday activities that can be carried on at home. The day was a success with all the kids from Canowindra Primary, St Edwards Catholic School, family day care, community groups and other local’s kids getting involved. They took part in drum and rhythm classes, storytelling, painting, face painting done by some of the High School kids, Aboriginal storytelling, Aboriginal dancing and other active fun events. The day went off without a hitch and ended with a BBQ and all the kids received a balloon and a book in a show bag. By Jessica Jenkins
Sing Canowindra Success The Sing Canowindra choral workshop was held last week on the 25th May at the CWA Hall which was held by folk@canowindra and facilitated by Christina Mimmocchi. This opportunity was made possible through funding by the Country Arts Support Programme, via Artsoutwest. Participants in the workshop travelled from Canberra, Sydney, Grenfell, Cowra, Dubbo, Forbes and Canowindra. The songs were written and arranged by Christina Mimmocchi, including a song sung in Wiradjuri; the choir also performed one of Nerida Cuddy’s songs. The day was catered for by the CWA Hall who served up a delicious lunch for the singers. Once the singers were trained up and their nerves had settled, they ventured to the Taste Canowindra to perform in front of an audience of 25. This was followed by a solo set by Christina Mimmocchi. “People came from near and far to take part, and stayed at our local motels and pubs, which is great for our little town, a real boost for Canowindra’s image and a real economic boost as well”, Founder of folk@ canowindra Nerida Cuddy said. “I think it’s great that CASP has got involved and enabled little towns like Canowindra to experience events like this. There will be a second series concert in August also funded by CASP featuring Dr Kim Cunio who will not only be performing at the folk@canowindra club, but also local schools”, Nerida stated.

We Need Your Help The ‘Log Cabin’ in Gooloogong is one of only two log cabins in Australia, and this special hall is in need of some restoration. The Log Cabin Committee need your support to help undertake the work. The restoration work will take place in stages, with the first being the replacement of the roof which is estimated at $60,000, of which the committee have already raised $20,000. The Esky Ball being held next month will aid in the fundraising which is why it is important for everyone to come along and support the Gooloogong community. Buses will be running from Cowra, Canowindra, Forbes, Grenfell and Eugowra. We are encouraging as many people as possible to attend, with over 200 expected. There are businesses from Cowra, Canowindra, Forbes, Eugowra and Grenfell on board with sponsorship to ensure the Esky Ball is a success and so future generations can also enjoy the Log Cabin.

Well it is coming to that time of year again when we are rugging up in our winter woollies and braving the cold. The cold snap came a few weeks ago with a Big Bang and took everyone by surprise and we are not holding our breath, because as we know it will soon return. It is perfect for women that travel as it breathes and you can wear it 12 months of the year. I also have heavier knitwear including wool and angora blends in bright bold colours or soft pink and mint green pastels. I am finding accessories are popular for this season including a great scarf, wrap or poncho. These easy wear garments can dress an
outfit up. I am also stocking pretty umbrellas and beautiful leather and wool gloves. These are accessories that we all need in Orange and throughout the Central West. I have a terrific selection of warm coats and jackets in all styles from classic to that point of difference look. Just arrived in store are Andiamo pants. These pants are proudly designed and made in Australia for Australian women. I have had many women over the years tell me that these pants are ‘their favourite and best fitting pant they have ever owned’. I am excited about this winter season. There are so many colours about to brighten our dreary Central West days. I think this autumn has been the best one we have seen for a long time. Top 7 - From a Man’s Perspective…
Independence - Women want to know that a man can take care of himself. They want a guy who is capable and independent, able to make his own decisions, pay his rent, and cook himself dinner. Despite what you might think, no woman wants to be your mother (besides, of course, your mother). Looks - Women are called the fairer sex for a reason. They’re much, much better looking than we are, what with our sharp angles, our hairy backs and our doughy centres. Still, despite their good nature, women care about looks too (if not quite as much as men do). Thus, it wouldn’t hurt to at least try and minimise the degree to which you remind them of a monkey. Communication - We often tease women about their capacity for conversation. However, men ignore the female inclination to talk at their peril. Women place a priority on guys they can talk to, who can express themselves and who are at least willing to listen to them when they talk about their concerns, hopes and desires. You should also know that the communication skill that trumps all others is the ability to be attentive. Sometimes, all a woman needs you to do is listen. Intelligence - Many women find smarts as sexy as physical appearance. For some of us, this can be frustrating, because, let’s face it, we’d all like to be smarter, and at one
time or another we’ve all felt like the dumbest guy in the room. Passion - If a woman is thinking about spending any time with you, she’d like to know that she can look forward to adventure, commitment, devotion, and excitement behind closed doors. Women love to see that you’re passionate, because in their minds passion in one sphere of life that can be transferred into another sphere of life, namely the bedroom. Humour - Now this does not mean you need to be “the life of the party.” Women typically don’t gravitate toward drunken buffoons. A good sense of humour just means you know how to tell and take a joke.
Ambition & Confidence The reason women gravitate toward men with successful careers isn’t because of the size of their paychecks, but rather because their success at work is indicative of certain attractive personality traits: commitment, discipline, strong work ethic -- all of which are things that will likely make a guy a good partner. High School’s First Markets Venture Attracting Big Support Canowindra High School’s first venture into a garage sale and markets fund-raising event went off in a big way on Sunday attracting hundreds of visitors and more than 30 stalls including some from Moorbel. Among them, one of the regular stalwarts of the Moorbel markets, Daphne Cooper from Cargo and her colourful display of knitted items. “I knit every day,” she told the Phoenix. “Sometimes all day if the weather’s wet.”
At the other end of the market experience, schoolgirls Laura Flannery and Georgie Fisher did well selling a very professional range of decorated greetings cards which they’d made themselves. But that was only a tiny part of the vast range of goods on sale – everything from toys, to homeware, to cake and preserves, to old garden tools. In all, the sale raised $1,800 for the school,
Longs Corner Road, Canowindra a great effort. However, a secondary sale went on at the same time, this organised by faculty members selling off equipment and other items, no longer used, that had been hanging around in storage for two decades or more. The proceeds from that sale went into their own faculty budgets. All in all, it was a triumph for everyone involved, especially the teachers. Pear & Berry Crumble
4 firm williams/beurre bosc pears, peeled, cored 500g frozen mixed berries 3/4 cup caster sugar 1 cup Vogel’s Premium Oven-Crisp Muesli 1/2 cup plain flour 60g butter, softened 1.

Preheat oven to 200°C. Cut each pear into 8 wedges. Place in a bowl. Add berries and sprinkle with 1/2 cup sugar. Toss to combine. Divide fruit mixture between six 1-cup capacity ovenproof cups or a 6-cup capacity baking dish. Combine muesli, flour and remaining 1/4 cup sugar in a bowl. Add butter. Using your fingertips, rub into dry ingredients until mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Scatter crumble mixture over fruit. Place on a baking tray and bake for 40 minutes or until golden and crisp. Serve with ice-cream.

GREEN Thumb By Ian Rogan Millthorpe Garden Nursery In a previous column I wrote about ornamental trees for your garden and the fact that winter is a good time to buy deciduous ornamental trees in their dormant, bare root forms-they will be about 30% cheaper than if you buy them potted up and in leaf, later in the year. This month I want to look a bit more closely at three of the most popular forms of deciduous ornamental trees-crab apples, elms and ornamental pears. Crab Apples (Malus) -There are at least 14 different forms of these small to medium size, spring flowering trees. Maypole Ballerina crab apple is a narrow tree growing up to 3 meters high and produces masses of dark pink flowers in spring followed by purple/bronze leaves and bright red fruit that is great for making crab apple jelly. Bechtel crab apple is a rounded tree growing up to 5 meters high-its mass of double, white flowers emerge from pink buds in late spring after its green leaves have emerged. Royal Raindrops is another crab apple growing up to 6 meters high, producing dark pink flowers in spring and attractive deep purple cutleaf foliage. Elms (Ulmus) -These are larger deciduous trees that can be great specimen trees in the garden or an avenue in larger spaces. Golden elms (up to 10m high and wide) are eye catching with their golden leaves-there is a great avenue of these on the highway on the eastern entrance to Molong. I have a silver elm as a specimen tree with striking cream speckled leaves in a circular drive in my garden. The dark green leaf, rounded English elm grows to about 15 meters. Ornamental Pears (Pyrus) -These have become very popular in recent years as street trees, lining driveways and as specimen garden trees. They have three great seasonal phases-dark green, glossy leaves in summer; brilliant orange/red autumn leaf colour and masses of white flowers in spring. Manchurian pear is a rounded tree growing to about 10 meters high and 7 metres wide. Capital is a much narrower grower, more suited to lining driveways.

Canowindra Sport knew how to win the game with the full time score being 20 - 14 Eugowra’s way. The Tigers were determined and never gave up as they continued to defend their territory. Simple mistakes were made by Canowindra which Eugowra used to their advantage and gained further control of the field. This week’s Players Player went to Blake Willson as his consistency helped the boys to get further as he was always right there in the middle of the game to back up and offer control of the ball when needed. Great work to try scorers Nick Willson and Mick Mason, and to Matty Mclean for kicking two penalty goals.

Canowindra vs. Eugowra The Youth League players dominated their home turf as they were able to beat Eugowra 30 - 24 playing with 9 players per side as Eugowra were short in players. Canowindra vs. Eugowra The Eugowra girls have highly improved since Canowindra beat them in the first round of this season, although the Tigresses weren’t expecting a 14 - 4 loss. The Tigresses pushed through and chased down the Geagles, displaying some fantastic effort and determination. Canowindra had a small number of reserves, and Captain Madi Vitnell was hospitalised with a head injury within the first 15 minutes of the game. Luckily Vice-Captain Krystal Coker was able to step up and keep the team moving after losing Madi, Krystal also scored the only try for Canowindra. This week the Tigresses have four Player Players as the following girls could not have been differentiated as they all put in an equal amount
of effort in defence and attack. Congratulations to Bonny Wythes for her second consecutive week, and also to Erin Coles, Krystal Coker and Ashley Mclean.

Tom Clyburn Oval at Canowindra will once again be hosting three home games this weekend on Sunday the 1st of June. Canowindra First Grade and League Tag will be versing Gooloogong, and Youth League will be versing Grenfell. Don’t forget that this is the last week for tickets to be purchased for the Canowindra Senior League Masquerade Ball which will be held at the Canowindra Services Club on the 14th of June. Tickets are $35 a head which includes a three course meal and a live band performing on the night. Tickets will be available at the canteen at Tom Clyburn Oval at this week’s home game, also at Kens Service Centre in Canowindra and through Terese Peters. Everyone is welcome to attend, so make sure you purchase a ticket, save the date and wear your favourite mask!
Webb’s Win Major Pairs
Congratulations to Cyril & Bruce on their win on Saturday in the final of major pairs, playing against Josh Bohanna & Vince Mirto in a very good display of bowls even though the final score was 21-12 it was still a very good game to watch. One other game played on Saturday N & J Preston give K Fisher & B Rose a bit of a touch up winning 24-19 after 10 ends Fisher & Rose were 18-4 but crawled back to be 19-20. Sunday we had Fuzz’s Memorial Day with 16 teams taking part, with the winners being Ron Bryant’s team from Gooloogong being the winners with Roger Traves being runnerup. I would like to especially thank the ladies for doing lunch & in particular Rifty for doing the BBQ. Next Saturday our no 5s play their 1st game in their zone play against Orange City here. GO BOYS.
