Virginia’s Gift To The Central West Our very own Virginia Cullane has handed over a $12,000 cheque to the local Central West Cancer Clinical Trials – a program that is close to her heart. Virginia herself has been suffering from liver and bone cancer and fighting an uphill battle from the side effects of her treatment. But as we have seen, Virginia is a fighter and has successfully raised $12,000 from her book sale a few weeks ago. “Luckily I was well at the time of preparation, but unfortunately I was too unwell to run the sale, thank goodness for my daughter Jenny”, Virginia said. Virginia, accompanied by her daughter Jenny handed the money over to the Orange Health Service Cancer Department on Thursday the 29th of May, and Virginia was content with her decision to donate the money locally. “I wanted to keep it local so it could ben-

efit everyone in the Central West”, Virginia stated. In the past, people participating in trials had to travel to Sydney every few weeks, and now thanks to Virginia and her kind donation, the trials can commence closer for everyone who needs it. The money donated by Virginia will go towards infrastructure to expand into international trials, and will focus on lymphoma, bowel, breast and prostate cancer. Dr Peter Fox, Medical Oncologist in Orange suggests that there has been a recorded improvement in cancer survivors due to clinical trials. “It is evident that these clinical trials have worked in the past and have improved outcomes for patients, and finally the Central West will now have access to this. Thumbs Up Thumbs Down

Dear Editor, I am writing to let your readers know about Heads Up a new campaign beyondblue has launched to promote mentally healthy workplaces. We want business owners and leaders to place just as much importance on people’s mental health as they do on their physical health and safety. And we have a new website to help businesses to take action to improve mental health in their workplace – www.headsup.org.au In a new Instinct and Reason survey of more than 500 business owners and managers, around half (45%) agreed that workplace mental health is a problem, but not a major cost to the business and almost as many (43%) agreed that businesses have more important issues to think about. I believe they may reconsider their position if they knew that a PriceWaterhouseCoopers report last week found that through absenteeism, decreased productivity and compensation claims, mental health in the workplace costs the Australian economy $10.9

THUMBS UP

To the man who dropped off a set of keys that had been lost near the Post Office on Friday the 30th May. They still haven’t been claimed, so if anyone has lost a set of keys, they are here at the Canowindra Phoenix office. THUMBS UP To the anonymous doner for the very generous donation for our daughter Adelaide. Please take this as our heartfelt thanks.

billion a year. So I invite business leaders and bosses to check out our headsup.org.au website to find out what they can do to make their workplaces mental health friendly. If you’re an employee, show this letter to your boss or check out the Heads Up website yourself. Mentally healthy workplaces are those that people look forward to attending, are sensitive to individuals’ needs, and where employees and managers are supportive of each other. While only about 30 people attended the Omega Ensemble’s concert at All Saints’ on Saturday evening, all who were there agreed that it was a rare treat to be right there amongst it with such world class musicians at the top of their game. Four Sydney based musicians, currently “musicians in residence” at Sydney’s iconic City Recital Hall at Angel Place, include a young Russian born pianist, Maria Raspopova who trained at Sydney Conservatorium and in Berlin. A clarinet, viola and bassoon were joined by the visiting virtuoso French clarinetist Paul Meyer, who travels the world playing with some of the most famous orchestras and ensembles. They played works by Mendelsshon, Debussy, Mozart and a modern piece composed in New York by the New Zealander Ben Hoadley who played the bassoon. The Mitchell Conservatorium at Bathurst asks several times a year if their members, visiting soloists and ensembles can perform at All Saints’, the beautiful old gothic style church whose vaulted timber ceilings produce, they say, about the best acoustics in the central west. The other great draw card is the church’s magnificent 8 foot concert grand piano, built in England in 1956 by Collard & Collard for the then director of Sydney Conservatorium Isadore Goodman. Anyone who regretted missing this concert can come and hear pianist Simon Tedeschi who is returning to Canowindra on Saturday 4th October to play it again, following his sellout concert last year. The Tim Clarkson Jazz Trio from Sydney, favourites of the ABC, are also hoping to come to Canowindra for a gig at All Saints’ on Sunday 13th July. Watch this space for details. By Richard Statham

Smoking Banned At Sporting Events Member for Dubbo, Troy Grant advises all sport spectator areas are now smoke-free. Mr Grant said that people may not be aware that smoking is now banned in all outdoor spectator areas of sports grounds during organised sports. “Sport is all about health and fitness and enjoying time with family and friends. These bans protect everyone from harmful second-hand smoke,” “Big or small - the smoking ban applies to organised sporting events of all sizes. “A $300 on the spot fine may apply for anyone in breach of this law.” Mr Grant said there were no safe levels of exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke. “Families and children make up a large part of sporting crowds and for children in particular, inhaling second-hand smoke is even more dangerous because their airways are smaller and their immune systems less developed. “I whole-heartedly support the campaign by NSW Health to create smokefree outdoor areas like sports grounds and recreational areas, and make smoking less visible to children and young people. “We can all do our part to make our community a healthier place and I urge everyone to follow the rules when attending sporting events this weekend.” To learn more, visit www.health.nsw.gov.au/smokefree

Canowindra CWA Kitchen Fundraiser Celebration Flowers, Bush Sculpture Demonstration and Lunch

Please support the wonderful ladies of the CWA who work so hard for our community. Canowindra CWA Hall Blatchford St 9.30am | $65 RSVP 6367 4202 IMAGE: Flo Nash with Reverend Jono cutting the celebratory cake at the CWA 90th birthday

CWA Birthday Bash Celebrates New Strength And Community Missions The Canowindra CWA’s Blatchford Street hall was filled to capacity for the group’s 90th birthday celebration last Saturday, reflecting a new upsurge of interest, spirit and strength that the organisation is enjoying throughout Australia. Indeed, Group Secretary Helena Donaldson’s address to the gathering hailed the CWA’s triumph as “the biggest lobby group in Australia” empowered by “women of high standards. “Governments come to us,” she reminded the packed throng. But Helena also emphasised the CWA’s power and mission locally – the importance of it being part of the community. “That’s what the CWA is all about,” she noted. Helena also reported on new social concerns that the CWA is engaging in these days – a decision at the organisation’s recent national meeting in Brisbane, for example, to campaign against the sale of addictive caffeine-enriched “power” drinks to minors. “At their age these caffeine heavy drinks are dangerous to the development of the

brain,” she said. All in all, the 90th birthday bash was a tremendously happy occasion for the Canowindra branch, and none were happier than one of its life members, Flo Nash, who officially cut the event’s celebrative cake. Flo is actually much older than the branch itself – now “97 and a half” as her relatives pointed out. Another guest speaker was new member Gemima Reid, who we all know as the mother of the “mixed mobility” chair-bound triplets Anwen, Mahala and Gideon. Gemima told of her first contact with the CWA – invited to tell of her children’s muscular dystrophy and the way the branch immediately swung behind her campaign for funding for new advanced wheelchairs and a special bus to transport them in. On our website at www.canowindraphoenix.com.au you can find a beautifully uplifting video filming encounter that I had with the triplets at the height of that campaign in April 2012. K & H Interiors Official Opening Over 100 people travelled from various parts of Australia to help celebrate Kim Lowe and Herb Beer’s official opening of K & H Interiors in Gaskill Street Canowindra on Saturday night. Carol Foster and Simon Barlow two of Kim’s favourite artists travelled from interstate to help celebrate and their art pieces are on display in the store at the moment. Michelle Porter officially opened the store as she was instrumental in working with Kim when she decided to relocate from Batemans Bay to Canowindra. The store offers a range of items from baby wear, soft furnishings, accessories and can do major interior and building works including kitchens and renovations. Mark Ward, who is in the process of having his kitchen renovated, spoke of the seamless process and pleasure it was to work with Kim and Herb. All the guests enjoyed food supplied by Tommy and a great night was had by all. Canowindra welcomes such a great business to the main street and we wish Kim and Herb all the best in this business venture. By Cheryl Newsom

The Regional Cook Brought to you by A Slice of Orange and Red Chilli Deli

Cookies? Bikkies! I believe food traditions are important but fear they endangered in today’s globalized, homogenous world. Our unique differences need to be fiercely upheld and for this reason I never make cookies - but I do make biscuits, or even more correctly, bikkies. ‘Cookies’ is absolutely correct if you are in America, or are in fact American. ‘Cookie’ comes from the Dutch ‘koeke’, meaning cake. This term was adopted by Americans in opposition to the English, who used the French term ‘biscuit’ meaning twice cooked, around the time of the War of Independence. Australia and Canada followed the English lead and adopted the term ‘biscuit’. But because we are Aussies, we have bikkies. Long may it continue. By Lesley Russell Orange Regional Cooking School www.learntocook.com.au

Biscuits one recipe, endless variations INGREDIENTS • 125g butter • 125g caster sugar • 1 egg • 250g self-raising flour, sieved Heat the oven to 170C. Grease a flat biscuit tray. 1. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy - the more thorough you are with this step the lighter the biscuits will be. 2. Mix in the egg and then the flour, working the mixture together to create a stiff dough. 3. Form small balls of the dough with your hands. Place them on the greased biscuit tray allowing room for spreading. 4. Flatten the balls slightly with the heel of your hand or a fork. 5. Bake for 10 – 15 minutes or until a nice golden colour. 6. Allow the biscuits to cool slightly, then carefully remove to a wire cooling rack. 7. Once completely cold, store in an airtight container. 8. Makes approximately 35 biscuits

Variations These are four of my favourites, I’m sure you can create your own. Note: These measurements apply to half the basic mixture, so once you have a batch divide the mix in two and make two different types. Cinnamon & Currant Add ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon to the flour and work in 2 tablespoons currants to the finished dough – this ensures that flour doesn’t get stuck in the crevices of the currants. Once the biscuits are baked, scatter immediately with a generous amount of caster sugar and allow to cool completely. Almond & Lemon Add 100g flaked almonds and the grated zest of a lemon to the mixture. Form the mixture into crescent shapes. Once baked and while still hot, very carefully toss in plenty of icing sugar and then allow to cool. Cornflakes Add ½ cup cornflakes and 2 tablespoons sultanas (optional) to the finished dough. Roughly crush 1 cup extra cornflakes and press these onto the outside of the balls of mixture. Orange & Coconut Add 1 tablespoon desiccated coconut and the grated zest of one orange to the mixture. Toss the balls of dough in extra coconut before baking.

A Touch Of Paris Comes To Orange

IMAGE: Carolyn’s winning photograph

Cranbury Invokes Carolyn’s Creativity Carolyn Kohler from Cranbury has won a unique Vivid experience after being selected as the winner for her stunning landscape photo of a dead tree framed by canola fields and a rainbow in a clear sky. Carolyn won a trip to Sydney for 2 nights and will be staying at the Pullman Hotel that overlooks the Sydney Harbour Bridge with her husband Steve. Carolyn entered the competition when she heard last call for entrants on the radio. Her photo captured a still moment of a dead tree that stands tall in one of her paddocks that she has photographed numerous times. “I love that tree, I actually captured the tree during the four seasons and made a video that is now on YouTube”, Carolyn said The competition asked entrants to create an image that combined the letter ‘V’ and the theme ‘light’, in which Carolyn produced a truly stunning photo. This is the second photo competition that she has entered and she has won both. The previous photo competition asked entrants to create a picture of happiness, and Carolyn captured a photo of children playing. Carolyn moved to Cranbury from the Central Coast 3 years ago and previously owned a local gallery in Canowindra, Studio 66 where she featured her very own hand crafted wearable pieces from natural fibres including al-

Luckily, Carolyn and her two boys, 7 and 9 at the time were not fatally injured, but are however still recovering physically and mentally. Carolyn’s creativity had been drastically affected by the accident, and combined with the physical recovery she had to stop working. “When something like that happens, it changes you, so I had to stop work to recover, which I was very upset about”, Carolyn said. Eating well - Find comfort in foods such as warming and nourishing soups and stews full of flavour and healthy vegetables. Be sure your diet includes winter foods such as sweet potato, green leafy vegetables, beetroot, kiwi fruit, mandarins, bananas, garlic and ginger.

Keeping bugs at bay - The viruses that cause colds are spread by sneezing, coughing and hand contact. Wash or sanitise your hands regularly and avoid close contact with someone who has a cold. TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY THIS WINTER

Stay hydrated - As the weather cools down and our thirst decreases it is easy to forget to drink enough water. You still need to aim for about two litres/day of water during winter as it is essential for our body to function. If you struggle with plain water (like we do sometimes) try herbal tea.

Boost immunity - Eating well, getting enough sleep and staying active are all important during winter to help keep you and your family healthy and to support your immune systems. Supplements containing

Des and Julie are originally from Orange. Des worked in senior management with Prime and WIN Television for 25 years. Moving from corporate life to motel life was a very easy transition for the couple as they lived in Canberra, Perth & Wollongong before enjoying the relaxed lifestyle of Canowindra. They purchased the motel in 2002 from Robert & Lucy Lynch who built the motel in 1999. Des & Julie enjoy meeting different guests & building lasting relationships with them over the years. What Des and Julie love most about running the motel is the people they meet, with one of their favourite events being the Canowindra Balloon Challenge as it brings in people from all over the world. They enjoyed the company of some Americans who stayed at the motel over the Balloon Challenge week. “When guests stay for about a week you do get to know them and start to build friendships with them, and the Americans were very friendly people”, Julie said. Even though running a motel is a 365 day a year job, they do make time to wind down and relax by taking holidays to the Sunshine Coast or simply taking time out.

First Grade

Canowindra vs. Gooloogong, Sunday 1st June Unfortunately the Canowindra First Grade players were unable to produce a home win as Gooloogong were determined to achieve their first win of the season with the final score being 24 - 20. Once again Canowindra displayed great skills in defence although not enough persistence in attack as the players were unable to break through to the try line as often as they had hoped. The efforts of a returned player in his first game of the season were definitely game changing as Simon Badgery was able to score 2 tries, one being the first try for Canowindra and he helped

This weekend on Sunday the 8th of June the Canowindra First Grade and Youth League teams will be travelling to Peak Hill to verse them on their home grounds. Supporters are welcome to come along and cheer on Canowindra at Peak Hill. Also don’t forget

Canowindra boys win first zone playoff. Last Saturday our no5s played their first round in the zone pennants against Orange City at Canowindra. With Orange well in front most of the game, our boys fought back right at the last few ends to take the game by just one shot, 6160. This helps a lot to be going to Glenbrook in 2 weeks to have a win plus 1. Well done & best of luck. Next weekend being the long weekend the only games to be played will be the semifinals of the minor pairs, N & J Preston vs. R Lynch & E Earsman, J Breen & D Sargent v B Bates & M Baldwin. This game to be played within a week.

Youth League

Canowindra vs. Grenfell, Sunday 1st June With a lack of players and some silly mistakes, the final score of the day was 22 - 16 Grenfell’s way. Canowindra had one player on the bench, not long from the first whistle a player was hospitalised, and then another player was helped off the field shortly after that which put an extreme amount of pressure on the other players. A notable mention to Luke Tarrant for stepping up to the mark and scoring 2 tries for the day also to Dan Friend for also scoring a try. Curtis Hughes was voted for 3 points for his fantastic effort in constantly pushing forward and controlling the game as Canowindra persisted fiercely in attempt for a win. The Willson brothers were also awarded points for the day as Alex was awarded 2 points and Sam was awarded 1 for their great contribution to the game. Congratulations to Canowindra’s full back for the day Mick Watt as he was awarded Players Player for his outstanding performance in his position.

League Tag

Canowindra vs. Gooloogong, Sunday 1st June Canowindra Tigers League Tag ladies performed an incredible game on their home grounds as they devoured Gooloogong 64 0. The Tigresses played to absolute perfection as they all put in 100% effort as individuals, therefore also as a team. After a couple of losses this is exactly what the girls needed to motivate themselves to start climbing back up the ladder. Their coach stated that he couldn’t fault any of the girls for their effort in the game, they all played brilliantly. Congratulations to this week’s try scorers Ash Mclean 4, Amy Carr 2, Tanika Wensley 2, Krystal Coker 2, Alicia Earsman 1, Jess Coker 1, and Kath Davis who ran the whole field with 1. Also a big congratulations to Ash Mclean who was awarded Players Player again for her outstanding performance. Congratulations Tigresses!

On Saturday 31st May, the mixed foursome round 1 was held. Sponsors were Golf Ladies. Seven teams entered the competition and winners on the day were Rowley & Ros with a net 73. Runners up were Don & Rhonda Ward with a net 76. Round 2 will be played next Saturday. On Sunday 1st the Holden Scramble was to be played but due to the bad weather we had to postpone it to Sunday 29th June. We held a social nine hole comp after lunch and the winner was Jake Devlin, runner up was Paul Jeffress on a countback from Bill Flannery. Thanks to Maxine, Rhonda and Maureen for cooking the BBQ and making the salads for lunch. Thanks to Greg Hamilton and James Wythes from Hamo Engineering for their contribution towards the repairs on the clubs equipment. Upcoming Events – 7/6 Mixed Foursomes Championships round, 8/6 Two Person Ambrose Championships 27 hole, 15/6 18 Hole Stroke, 22/6 Medal Stroke and 29/6 Holden Scramble.
