The community spirit of Canowindra was still strongly felt in town after the success of the Christmas day luncheon. The beginning of 2014 saw Con the Cabbie handing over the taxi to Craig Dreyer. Geoff Yeo got the ribbing of the month with his ‘our bloke’ answer that bringing Jackie breakfast in bed makes his day, you sly fox. Ian Brown proudly displayed one of the regions examples of farming innovation, the Britannia Boiler which is still there in 2015. The Australia Day Awards saw sisters Beck and Taneil Thornberry named Youth Ambassador and Young Citizen of the Year respectively while Con claimed Canowindra Citizen of the Year.
The month of love saw the engagement of Amanda Beath and Brodie Friend, who recently welcomed baby Isabella into their lives. Pearl and Jim Brown also celebrated 64 years of marriage and The Falls Retreat opened its doors just in time for Valentine’s Day. After a long dry spell the heavens opened and a welcome 30 mils of rain drenched Canowindra’s dusty streets while Tommy took over the Deli Lama, celebrating in style with a grand opening show.
International Women’s Day was celebrated at the Deli Lama with Jane Atkinson as the guest speaker. Canowindra set the stage for Strangerland, but even stranger was the revelation of Nicole Kidman’s family ties with the town (a distant relative of T.J.Finn!) The new swimming pool was officially opened by Charlie McCarron (whose Uncle opened the original pool 60 years previous) and Kerby Lawrence was appointed Chairperson for the Health Advisory Council.

Downtown Canowindra was star-struck as the film crews rolled in to transform Gaskill Street into dust-blown bush town, Nathgari. The week long shooting of ‘Strangerland’ allowed residents to meet Hugo Weaving and Nicole Kidman, who were seen visiting many of our local businesses, including the pubs! The 44th annual Debutante Ball was also held in which 12 girls adorned in white gowns were welcomed into society as ladies.
May was a baby boom month for Canowindra, as Suzie & Adam Nash welcomed Lachlan, Abbey & Sam McRae saw the arrival of Alby, Tracey & Greg Holmes met Emily and Daniel Walker & Bonnie Thurtell said hello to Noah. Canowindra celebrated the success of it’s first ‘international’ status Balloon Challenge, Lisa Cartwright pushed for life saving equipment at the Sports Oval after a dangerous incident at the Swimming Pool, Canowindra C.W.A celebrated its 90th birthday and the Age of Fishes greeted new Manager, Warren Keedle.
The Community Players brought ‘TC & AJ Talent Scouts’, a musical tale of two failing impressionists who try to claw back into showbiz by forming a punk-rock boy band. The Men’s Shed celebrated eight successful years and Annette, Lynette and Kay enjoyed a long awaited catch-up after 57 years apart. Ashlea Codner braved the razor, shaving her hair off to raise $8000 for cancer research whilst Virginia Cullane handed over a $12,000 cheque to Central West Cancer Clinical Trials. June continued the baby boom with the arrival of Harry to Sare and Clayton Maynard.

Sale-O Sale-O! Rain Kick-Starts The Year For Local Livestock Farmers Good local rainfall in and around Canowindra during the first two weeks of January has given farmers a reason to smile. With only a yarding of 2920 head of cattle at Carcoar Livestock Exchange on Tuesday 13th, quality was excellent, with the bulk of the cattle showing good degrees of finish. Vealers were limited in supply, with yearlings well supplied and good runs of heavy weight prime conditioned steers also penned. Cows were well represented with the majority high yielding and suitable for the meat processors. The usual orders competed, with prices through the categories reaching CTLX record levels. The yearling steers mainly went to lot feeder orders. On Friday 16th at the restocked sale there was a much reduced yarding of only 800. James Carr from Funny Hill, Binda was

pleased with a line of 28 steers coming in at around 350 kg and fetching $890. These were bought by Ashley Clark, an independent buyer from Lyndhurst. “They are going to be sent to south east Queensland to a feed lot before being killed at Casino and then exported to China” he said. At the moment, anybody looking to restock is paying a premium for stock. Whereas this time last year a 250kg beast was worth around $500-$520, now they are selling for $680-$700 each. Paul Breen from KMWL, Forbes said, “cows and calves at foot have gone up dramatically from last year with prices around the $650-800 mark and this year the same cows and calves are on the market and bringing between $1500$1740.” Cont. page 3

Hello, I’m hoping maybe one of your readers might be able to help us. To put you in the picture, we moved here almost 4 years ago for a country change from Springwood in the Blue Mountains. We loved Canowindra from the moment we arrived and finally found ‘home’. Within a week or so after we moved here, we found out that my husband’s Great grandfather, Gordon Kennedy Minter and Helena Minter (nee Townsend) were land holders in the area late 1800’s early 1900’s - ALAS we have relatives in the Canowindra cemetery (so now we must be locals). Gordon was a magistrate in the local area however, one of his son’s, Linden Minter drowned in the Belubula river aged 14 (1903) and we haven’t been able to locate his grave. We have located other family member graves such as George Townsend (Linden’s uncle) however, we can’t find Linden and he has become close to our heart. Maybe someone can help us find him! Dear Editor, Actions by radical Islamists in western society have become a more relevant concern for Australians after the events of the Lindt Cafe in Martin Place, Sydney. I wrote to my state and federal members of parliament regarding ‘The Draft Islamic Constitution of Australia’ available for view on the CONCIT website http://concit.org/australiaunder-islam-in-25-years-islamic-constitutionof-australia/ I asked if this document is recognised as a document of political significance within state and federal politics, and passed the opinion its existence and content was most concerning for Australia. State member Andrew Gee replied to my letter within protocol time stating he had passed on the document and my concerns to Premier Mike Baird, and would inform me of any response. Federal member John Cobb has not acknowledged or replied to my letter identical in form to the one presented to Andrew Gee. If I was not concerned about such events as the Lindt Cafe, and the 15 September 2012 Islamic protests in Sydney where the Shahada flag similar to the one used at the Lindt cafe, and by Islamic State, was waved above banners stating harm be inflicted on innocent Australians, then I would become part of the problem. Australians are not judged on their political beliefs, religion, or race, they are judged on their actions and character. These people’s actions are the poorest within humanity and warrant attention of the highest degree. Brian Cain

Continued from front page… Ben Emms, from Ray White Emms Mooney said that it was a red hot market on Friday 13th. “I’m pleased to say that this doesn’t look like a flash in the pan” Ben said. When contacted about their prices on Friday many sellers were asking if this would last. Ben feels it will, “ when you look at the market forces in play it’s easy to mount a strong argument as to why this may well be around for a while!” Tuesday’s cattle sale on 20th January, at Carcoar, saw a yarding of 4600 cattle, substantially up on the previous week. The market was firm apart from cows, which were slightly easier. Steers were the winner with one line at 518kg steers averaging $1222. Paul Breen went onto say that the lamb market on Tuesday 20th in Forbes was steady from last week, with some new season heavy lambs, weighing approximately 135kgs making $198.00 each. Let’s hope this lucky streak continues for our local farmers.

2014 Christmas Lunch A Success, Roll On 2015... The 2014 Canowindra Christmas Day Lunch was a great success! Around 55 people attended and everyone shared and enjoyed the Christmas celebration, due to the fantastic support given by and for the community of Canowindra. Thank you to everyone that contributed, especially to The Canowindra Bowling Club for a great venue, The Food Basket, CWA, The Bullock Family and Spencer Chapman for their music, The Canowindra News, Neil Gill from 2GZ FM, The Canowindra Phoenix, Canowindra @ Home, St. Vincent de Paul, All Saints Anglican Church, St Edwards Catholic Church and the Canowindra Uniting Church. There are so many individuals and businesses that generously gave their support through the donation of goods, advertising, venue and food preparation, serving and clearing. Decorations and tables were prepared through our local Schools and Moyne Eventide Home. Canowindra is extremely fortunate to have a strong community and Christmas Spirit ac-
tive and willingly to be shared with others. The Canowindra Christmas Day Lunch Committee needs more people who are willing to contribute to the planning, preparation and organizing of the day. If you have ever considered becoming involved in a community project with a friendly group of people and welcoming of new ideas then perhaps this is your opportunity. Please contact Marion on 63441716 for further details. Planning and organizing is essential even if you are unable to come on the day. If anyone would like to leave any feedback regarding the Christmas Day Lunch you can do so by dropping a note in the box provided at the Canowindra Post Office. I’d like to take the opportunity to extend a very massive ‘Thank You’ to all the volunteers we have in Canowindra in so many different ways. We are very fortunate to have so many community minded people. Our community spirit and support for Canowindra truly does mean ’Home’. By Deb Rutter
I have seen many examples of people thinking they were insured for one thing only to find out due to a wording they weren’t covered at all. Burglary & theft is a classic example in the insurance world where there are 2 levels of cover. Burglary or forced entry cover is the common coverage on commercial premises and low end home insurance policies. If they don’t break in using force you will not be covered. The more upmarket home policies and farm package products generally always cover the insured for theft or open air cover and the better ones will also cover for loss. The main thing to keep an eye on when taking out insurance is what level of cover is required if you can’t lock it up then it may pay to spend a little more and get a higher end product that doesn’t place restrictions on your claim. Sky’s The Limit For Improved Balloon Challenge Board We caught up with Jan Kerr this week for an update on the upcoming Balloon Challenge and found there’s been a shake up on the board front. Graham Kerr takes the reins this year as board Chairman, with Kel Lewis as Vice Chairman. Kel has been a balloonist for 20 years and is NSW’s rep for the Australian Balloon Federation. Gary Lochyer will also be returning all the way from Canada to be the Director, “we’re thrilled to have him back!” says Jan. “This year we’ve employed a part time Event Manager, Jacky Jansse” Jan said. Jacky has previous experience as an Event Manager in Canberra and brings a wealth of experience to the board. Also new to the team is Karla Tatterson, who runs Kurious Productions, an events management company based in Sydney. “We’ve got a really good team together this year and are focussing on expanding for the future’ says Jan Kerr. ‘We didn’t bid to host the 2015 Nationals as we wanted to give
other States a chance, so we’re purely focussing on the International Balloon Challenge.” For Jan and the team, the sky’s the limit when it comes to ballooning, “the vision is to grow into a fully-fledged international event” she says, “3 years down the track we’re looking at the Women’s World Championships. For now, we’re still looking for sponsors, particularly a major one. Cabonne has been instrumental in supporting the challenge for the last 3 years and continue to support us with their partnership in 2015.” Cabonne Council has increased it’s funding for the Challenge from $5000 to $20,000 this year. The festival attracted more than 15,000 people last year and injected $1.9 million into the economy. In 2014 more than 200 caravans, 120 motor homes and 80 campers stayed at Canowindra Showground. We hope that 2015 will attract even more balloon lovers. By Rhi Quinn
Australia day marks the anniversary of the arrival of the first fleet of British ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales in 1788 and the raising of the British flag at that site by Governor Arthur Phillip. Since 1994 all States and Territories have celebrated Australia Day as a unified public holiday. Canowindra’s celebrations will begin at 1.30 pm in Morris Park, and Cr. Anthony Durkin announced late on Tuesday afternoon that Johnno Williams will be the MC for the day and Marion Wilson will give the Australia Day address. Marion has been involved in the Canowindra community for many years, first through the Community Nurse services and lately with the organisation of the Food Bowl and Xmas Lunch. After the ceremony, it’s usually onto the pubs to continue the merriment, the Canowindra Hotel are having a Bogan themed party and the Royal Hotel are celebrating all weekend with DJ Matt Robson providing entertainment on Saturday night plus drinks specials – Corona buckets 4 for $20 and cider 4 for $20. If you’re planning on a BBQ at home don’t forget to head to Belubula Butchery for minted lamb, sausages and everything else to keep those tummy’s happy. Grab your flag and celebrate your national day!

• Free breast screens available to all women over the age of 40 • A woman’s risk of developing breast cancer to age 85 is 1 in 8 early detection is your best protection
Medical Have A Feel Of Your Funbags For the third month running we’re giving boobs the spotlight, and for an excellent reason. Sweater stretchers, blinkers, dairy pillows, godzillas, whimwams, wahwahs, yazoos and my personal favourite, chesticles are a normal and natural part of every woman’s body. This is why it is so important that we regularly check them to make sure they still feel normal. On average 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives and early detection is extremely important. Despite this, less than one in two women attend regular breast screenings. It’s time to start looking after yourself. The key risk factors for breast cancer are being female and growing older, which is why the BreastScreen program is primarily designed for women aged between 50 and 74 as this is when incidences of breast cancer are at their highest.
However, all ladies over 40 are welcome to attend mammograms through BreastScreen NSW. If you’re in these age groups, it’s recommended that you undertake a screening every 2 years to assist in early detection. A mammogram takes approximately 15 minutes, which is time well spent when it comes to looking after you. Even if you don’t have a family history it’s still important to be screened. Family histories only account for 5-10% of all breast cancers diagnosed. Cancer is mostly a random event that could happen to anyone, reinforcing the importance of screening for ALL women. BreastScreen appointments are available every week in Orange Please share this information with your friends, family and colleagues. Contact 13 20 50 to make your appointment, the service is free to all women aged from 40 years and no referral is needed. Early detection is your best protection, so go get yourself screened. Breast cancer wont wait- everything else can.

Where do you work? I’m Manager of the Age of Fishes Museum Have you always been involved in museums? No, when I left school I was a chemical engineer but I hated it so I became a chef. I was a chef for 12 years but the hours were anti-social so I didn’t see my kids as much as I’d like, I went to work for NSW National Parks and now here I am in Canowindra! We hear you like to learn whilst working? I completed a degree in Applied Sciences then a Major in Cultural Heritage. I’m thinking about doing an honours degree in Palaeontology but undecided at the moment. I’d like to give it a break as I’ve been studying for 9 years straight. Hobbies and interests? I enjoy all types of games especially strategy. What do you like to do in your spare time? Look after five children, I don’t have any spare time. That’s why I’ve got no hair! New Years resolutions? Not to study this year! Worst habit? Drinking too much coke and not doing up shoelaces. If you won the lotto what would you spend the money on? I’d go on holiday with my family, show the kids some culture.

I Once Met a Man, Places and People – Stories from the Road by Australia’s Most Famous Bushman – Illustrated Edition In I Once Met a Man, legendary Australian figure R. M. Williams tells wonderful stories of his most memorable encounters in the bush. From the rough riders to sideshow fighters, from the best woman drover in the west to a young English lady who raised her sons with their Aboriginal father’s tribe, Williams recreates the characters he met in his harsh and hungry years spent on the road with a swag. These were originally published in 1989, now an illustrated edition has just been published. It contains stunning photographs of central and outback Australia from leading Australian photographers taken in and around locations mentioned in R M’s stories. It is a beautifully presented book, with a series of true short stories of Williams outback adventures. He met many of the famous outback pioneers such as Tom Quilty and many who were not so famous but had a good yearn to tell.
”Understand, then, that these chapters are concerned with the spirit of men and women from whom something of worth has shone out to make them worthy of record. You will note that the book is not of deeds, achievement, great honour; just that indefinable something that has no other name in our language but spirit...”

Local Boy Amongst First Batch Of Graduates Canowindra locals Brett Morgan and Kerrie Smith are very proud parents this week. Their son, Kelton Morgan-Smith, was one of seven to be the first ever graduates from the National Indigenous Culinary Institute at Rockpool on Monday. The NICI was established in 2012 to improve employment opportunities for indigenous people and the three year hospitality program offers training and experience to aspiring chefs. Kelton works at Bondi Icebergs in Bondi and has been offered a full time position there should he want it. “This certificate is a ticket to the world,” says mum Kerrie, “There are a lot of youths in Canowindra who complain about a lack of opportunities but who don’t search for them. I’m just so proud of Kelton for being brave enough to get out of his comfort zone and go for it!” The certificate is signed off by 10 of Australia’s top chefs and the ceremony was attended by high profile industry figures and federal politicians including Tony Abbott.”A lot of the guys have said they never thought they’d have a chance of working in restaurants at this level,” says NICI program co-ordinator Cain Slater. “Now there’s no reason they can’t.” NICI is set to launch in Melbourne later in the year. Well done Kelton! By Rhi Quinn

Just Keep Swimming Enrolments are now open for Term 1 lessons. Spaces are available for Monday, Tuesday and Saturdays. Lessons will run for 30 mins duration. For more info or to enrol email justkeepswimmingcanowindra@outlook.com Swimming Club Hot weather greeted the final swimming club of 2014 and the swimmers efforts were just as hot. Cameron Wheeler dropped 2 seconds off his 25m freestyle in the Spoon semis as he just qualified for the Final. In the final it was a photo finish as Cameron swam another 2 second PB to take home the Spoon just 3 hundredths ahead the flying ambo, Paul Sinfield, in lane six. Another sizzling swimmer was Matilda Cramp who smashed her 25m freestyle time by 8 seconds in the Spoon semi and then followed that up by a 7 second improvement in her 25m breaststroke time. Taking home the pennants with Matilda were Laura Flannery, Lillian Harrison, Samantha Flannery, Georgie Fisher and Tom Mitchell. Holidays lowered the numbers to about 36
swimmers for the Spoon. Cameron Wheeler took out his second Spoon in consecutive swimming clubs as he held off Josie Clements in second and Hugh Breen in third place. The relay was over in about one and a half minutes as four swimmers in six lanes thrashed the water to foam. Triumphing in lane 4 were Hugh Breen, Bill Harrison, Georgie Fisher and Kye Reid. July saw Canowindra schools celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Education Week while Peg and Ron Lynch celebrated their 72nd Anniversary. Arthur Falconer resigned from the Ballooning Committee, but kept on ballooning and Adelaide Ellis did Australia proud in Canada, competing in discus, relay and high jump. Gaskill Street shop windows sparkled with festive cheer for ‘Christmas In July’, Anthony D’Onise’s wine ‘Pig In The House’ made at the Windowrie winery won ‘Organic Wine of the Year’ and Virginia Cullane raised over $15,000 for Central West Cancer Clinical Trials.
Fields of gold surrounded the town as the canola began to bloom on track for a record harvest. Book Week saw the arrival of some strange literary characters including Mario who looked suspiciously like St Eddie’s Principal, Ken McNamara. Canowindra Preschool welcomed some chirpy new additions and the Showground headed for a big upgrade as it was awarded almost $73,000. Roy White and friends got their engines revved in preparation for Tractor Trek, in aid of Camp Quality.
September saw the High School picking up the pieces after vandals caused thousands of dollars’ worth of damage. The entire community was left reeling after the shocking and tragic death of Chris Noble in Rozelle. Tributes poured in in their hundreds, especially from the sporting teams Chris was involved in. Canowindra officially farewelled Chris on September 13th in a moving service where friends, colleagues and residents joined the Noble family in their grief, pride and love. We all still think of you, and will always miss you. Hooroo.

Ghouls and goblins skulked the streets for Halloween and lanterns lit the night thanks to Colleen Traves, who raised $9000 for Leukaemia Foundation. The Twilight Markets came to town, the shop windows and balconies of Gaskill Street were laced with patch-work quilts and Slogger Green was reunited with his family after 55 years of being lost. Canowindra held its annual 113th Canowindra Show with the Farmer’s Challenge being the highlight and the 2014 Showgirls were sashed.
November was a month of reflection as we remembered our fallen in Memorial Park and paid tribute to Virginia Cullane. It was filled with heat as firefighters battled the flames at Nyrang Creek and Cudal Road and a suspicious act set a house ablaze on Charlotte Street. Health was on the agenda as the Fitness Path became even better and Alison Stephens planned her 250km run to raise money for diabetes research and a range of moustaches were sported by local men for Movember.
An army of Santas watched from our rooftops as the town busied itself for Christmas. A nun-derful show was put on by Tommy Jeffs/ Tallulah to raise over $10,000 for the High School, Canowindra had its first ever Christmas Shopping Night and Moyne car park resonated with festive melodies. December is a month to eat, drink and be merry and we didn’t disappoint as Christmas parties were held all over town and Graduation ceremonies were celebrated by all four of our schools. It’s been a year to remember, we look forward to the next one!
