Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (Australia) With International Women’s Day on next week’s horizon, we want to share with you information about who we are raising money for in Canowindra and why. For a population of almost 100 million, Ethiopia has less than 200 obstetrician/ gynaecologists and less than 5,000 trained midwives. A woman dies every two minutes from pregnancy and childbirth related complications. If a rural woman is among the 5% of women worldwide who face obstructed labour, they will be in agony for days. They almost always lose their baby and suffer horrific internal damage – sometimes the bladder is completely destroyed. They leak constantly and are pushed to the edge of their society, too filthy to be part of village life and considered a curse. But there is hope. In the Ethiopian capital, there is a hospital especial-

ly for patients such as these. The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital and its five regional hospitals treat obstetric fistula patients free of charge, thanks to the generosity of donors to Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (Australia), which is the charity we are supporting. The charity was formed by Australian obstetriciangynaecologist, Dr Catherine Hamlin AC who is also the co-founder of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital and the Hamlin College of Midwives. In the 1950s Catherine and her late husband Reg went to Ethiopia to train midwives, but their attention soon turned to the plight of the fistula sufferers. Together the Hamlins perfected the modern technique for obstetric fistula surgery and have treated over 40,000 women, more than 90% of them cured. Join us on the 5th March to support these women.

Dear Editor

Dear Editor,

Cranky Rock has been, to my memory, the chosen site for a Belubula dam for over 60 years. It was as logical in the 1950’s as it is today and tomorrow. The structure of the chasm at the opening that the river runs through is underlying solid rock which would only require superficial cosmetic preparation for the concrete or earth/rock wall and the water could provide a degree of hydro-power electricity for the grid. Don’t attempt flood mitigation if you value the silt that is deposited on the river flats down-stream. They were created by silt falling out of suspension as flood water slowed down when it spread over low areas. Why not get on with it and stop prevaricating.

As Australia prepares to commemorate the landing of the first ANZAC troops in Gallipoli 100 years ago, we ask that you also remember the work of Red Cross by supporting Red Cross Calling during March. Just like the thousands of Red Cross volunteers who worked so hard to support our ANZAC troops in 1915, Red Cross volunteers still continue to care for those who need it most. By making a donation or organising an event, you can support the everyday work of Red Cross such as working in NSW bushfire relief and recovery centres, making daily phone calls to elderly Australians living alone, providing breakfast for children who might otherwise go to school hungry, and supporting young parents. In years to come, many people will continue to turn to Red Cross for help in times of crisis and we’re determined to be there when they do. To make a donation, or to find out how you can get involved with Red Cross Calling go to our website at redcrosscalling.org.au or phone 1800 008 831. Jody Broun Executive Director NSW, Australian Red Cross

Eddy emphasised the importance of doing more to grow visits to all aspects of social media this year. The Christmas shopping event had mixed results from a short time frame but it still encouraging, with earlier planning scheduled for this year. “We’re looking this year to leverage Canowindra as ‘more than you expect’ using the tech platform” said Eddy. The other election officers of 2015 were; Vice President Mark Gardner, Treasurer Graham Rice and Secretary Caddie Marshall. The fee for joining the

IMAGE: Ben and Jess are excited to help you plan your special day

A New Year brings a new batch of lovebirds looking for the perfect wedding venue to Jess & Ben Stanley. The couple took over the renowned wedding and function venue in Eugowra, Eat Your Greens, on the 1st January. Jess and Ben had both worked as chefs at the venue for five years when the offer to buy by previous owners Neil and Jane came about, “They wanted to step back and we wanted to step forward’ says Jess. Keen to keep the menu seasonal and on-trend, the pair say they are looking forward to organising more events such as the ‘Taste of Autumn Dinner’ on 14th March and a ‘Mother’s Day Lunch’ on the 10th May. The Eat Your Greens team don’t just stay on-site for functions, they also do mobile catering, “we’re fully self-sufficient, we can set up a commercial kitchen on any site, whether it’s a farm, shearing shed, car port of paddock!” says Ben.

Though weddings are ever-popular, the duo can cater for birthdays, anniversaries and other celebratory events on a large scale (up to 1000 people) The indoor area of the venue fits 150 people and outdoors can fit as many as you wish, complete with marquees if the weather doesn’t go your way. “The whole venue is yours to do as you please, you don’t get kicked out of your room at check-out time, while you’re here this is your personal, private space” says Ben. The couple offer one-on-one service, discussing ideas with each individual for their big day. “Nothing is fixed, we can change things to accommodate your needs” says Jess. For the latest updates and photos of recent events check out their Facebook page- EatYourGreensFunctionCentre. By Rhi Quinn

RURAL ROUNDUP Mixed Results For Forbes Cattle And Lamb Sales… Canowindra Clearing 13th March KMWL ( Kevin Miller Whitty Lennon) is one of the leading Stock and Station Agents in Forbes and the Central Western district. The head office is in Forbes but Agents are based at the surrounding districts of Young, Cumnock, Canowindra and Condoblin. We caught up with Paul, who is the agent based in Canowindra and Alicia, the Administration and Sales Processing Officier, to get an update on the cattle sale that took place in Forbes this Monday. 2173 were yarded and competition was weaker with not all the usual buyers operating. Yearlings were 3 to 5c easier and heavy steers were slightly cheaper than usual. Cows fell another 8 to 10c compared to last

week’s sale. A sheep sale took place in Forbes the following day with 38000 yarded including 28000 lambs. Lamb quality was good with all weights of prime lambs well supplied. Despite a 50% increase in numbers competition was keen and prices for trade lambs were up to $3 dearer. All other lambs sold at firm rates compared to last week’s sale. A Clearing Sale will take place on 13th March at Sunnyvale, Canowindra. The property has already been sold but vendors Paul and Pauline have a lot of equipment left to shift before they uproot and head to pastures new. ‘We are retiring so want to get rid of everything and go relax. We’ve got so much stuff it’s hard to recall it all!” says Paul, “but a few things include a sideboard, the top of a rolldesk in great condition, 140 first cross ewes January shorn and the majority scanned and lambed and approximately 35 tonnes of Tilga oats.” Also up for sale is an antique full timber roller door from the 1920’s, a dishwasher from a recent kitchen renovation, tents, chairs, recliners and lounges, art prints and originals. The farm house specialised in wheat, sheep and canola so the clearing sale will include extensive hay and silage making equipment and excellent cattle feeding facilities. Elders have been involved in organising the sale. Elders are rural services provider offering finance, livestock and wool marketing, farm merchandise, agronomy, property and auction sales. More information on this sale will be in next week’s edition.

RURAL ROUNDUP MSM Milling Introduces Premium Partner Bonus For Monola Growers MSM Milling is a fully integrated oilseed crushing, refining and packaging operation located at Manildra. MSM is proud to be a regionally based Australian owned company, adding value to oilseeds sourced direct from farmers, producing the highest quality ready to use products for consumers in Australia, New Zealand, Asia and other export markets. Customers of MSM Milling share the benefits of passion and innovation, efficient logistics and modern integrated processing facilities. MSM Milling has introduced a new Premium Partner Bonus for growers of the specialty high oleic canola variety, Monola*, bringing $105/metric tonne to the premium for certified growers in acknowledgement of their commitment to sustainability and food safety. MSM’s General Manager Commercial, Charlie Aldersey, says the $10/tonne Premium Partner Bonus is in addition to a $95/tonne premium paid to Monola growers. “We know our farmers grow quality, sustainable and safe crops in an extremely strict regulatory environment. MSM Milling wishes to formalise that acknowledgement and promote Australia’s high food safety and sustainability standards to customers here and overseas.” “The uptake of high oleic oil by food manufacturers means that Australian producers are reducing their reliance on imported, less healthy oils. Recent food contamination scares involving imported frozen fruit have highlighted concerns about imported food safety. MSM’s Premium Partner Bonus shows our commitment to farmers and Australia’s clean and green, sustainably grown, produced and processed safe food products,” Mr Aldersey said.

To be eligible for the Premium Partner Bonus, farmers will be required to complete a self-declaration at the commencement of contracting or when they fill in a planting declaration, similar to the scheme used in the EU. MSM Milling has also recently diversified its product range and now offers a range of high quality refined, bleached and deodorised soft oils. These include sunflower oil, cottonseed oil and corn oil. They can offer a variety of bulk and food service packaging formats, produced in our new state of the art packaging facility. If you would like more information on this bonus or on the range of products the company offers give Charlie a call on 0419 156 790 or call 1300 MANILDRA.

What Women Want... As I watch the leaves begin to change from fresh greens to chocolate, tawny and coppers I get rather excited about the fashions for this coming season…. We all know that leaves beginning to turn means winter will be upon us before we know it. Our wardrobes will begin the annual upheaval as we switch flowery, skimpy summer dresses for woolly jumpers and snug coats to prepare as best we can for what is coming. You will all be glad to know that winter at Kendal is full of colours. From pastels to clear brights that sit against your staple tones of black and charcoal are full of the trends for this Autumn. In pastels, soft pinks and blues are apparent and winter white is very strong for this season. If these are not your colours you will also find strong khaki green and burnt oranges. For those women who like bright, bold colours this winter we have you covered! Fire engine red is a stand out this season. Team your red back with camels and black to anchor it, bright red all over is not for the faint of heart! A neutral colour palette of winter whites and ivory teamed with black or navy form a great basis for your autumn wardrobe. Nay is a predominant colour for Autumn and sits

with all colours for a fresh look. Fake furs, felts, silks and crepe sit nicely together to create a unique and wearable wardrobe. The fabrics this season seem to be soft and feminine. Prints are still strong for this season with animal prints remaining the most popular. Animal prints can simply be teamed back with black basics to create a smart and simple outfit. Starting this season I will be stocking Tooralie knitwear. This company has had a major revamp and have designed the most beautiful woollen jumpers and cardigans in amazing colours. This knitwear will sit with our ever popular Not your Daughters Jeans and fine 100% merino garments from Hedrena. Goondiwindi Cotton has done a wonderful colour palette for winter and it is retailing very well. They have amazing cottons and the quality is second to none. My European labels are showing soft pretty feminine fabrics and designs as well as adding a twist for that edgy look. If you look in your wardrobe and simply don’t think your clothes can face this winter or want to try and new look in the cold season then call in to see myself or the girls and we can help you to revamp your look, it’s never too soon for a change! Take care of yourselves, Kendal x

OUR Gal Melva Grant How long have you lived in Canowindra? 89 years, I was born here. Where did you/do you work? I worked at Rosemary Café for 2 years after school then at Bests which was where the IGA is now. I’ve also worked for forty odd years for the Red Cross and the Catholic Women’s Group helping other people. What are your hobbies? I love gardening. How do you start your day? I get Danny off to work and Jack off to school! What is your worst habit? Screaming ‘pick up your clothes!’ How do you like your coffee? I love coffee, my favourite is a latte at Tommys. Who would you like to have dinner with? The people I have a lot of time for are Dr O’Ryan and Dr Kumar, I think they’re wonderful. Where is your favourite place in the world? Canowindra, the people who work in the main street are marvellous to elderly people. They have a lot of respect for people my age.

COMPUTER Bytes Is your not so old computer getting slow? Maybe it needs a service but often the slowness is caused by the PC not being shut down regularly. Windows 7 and Windows 8 are often programmed to sleep when you hit the power button so change the setting. PC’s that often sleep instead of restarting slow down and become unreliable. Laptops in particular do this and if it sleeps and you move it then it’s possible to damage the hard disk. By Chris Gregory

In a previous Green Thumbs column I had briefly mentioned some lovely autumn flowering bulbs (nerine and crocus) which I’m already starting to see a few flowers of in gardens around the central tablelands. In this column I want to cover some of the spring flowering bulbs, for which there are lots of catalogues around at the moment, and for which keen gardeners will be beginning to plan for planting. There is an almost endless range of cultivars of anemones, daffodils, Dutch iris, freesias, hyacinths, ranunculus and tulips to choose from. The ones that put on the best show in my garden are daffodils, Dutch iris and tulips and a few of my favourite cultivars are: Daffodils- fortune (yellow with a frilly orange cup); ice follies (creamy white); geranium (cluster form, white with orange-red cup); manly (double form, white with orange centres) Dutch Iris- blue magic (purple-blue); Casablanca (white with yellow tongue); paris (dark blue) Tulips- queen of the night (dark purple/ black); flaming parrot (large ruffled yellow petals with red edges); claudia ( purple with white edges); ile de france ( red); Barcelona (fuchsia purple). Plant these types of bulbs in sunny spots in the garden or in pots in April/May. Mulch and fertilise with a complete fertilizer as the leaves begin to emerge in spring. After flowering finishes you can remove the spent flower heads but it is best to leave the leaves in place until they yellow or begin to die back (they are putting the nutrients and energy into next year’s bulbs in the ground). I tend to leave bulbs in the ground for several years, where they will multiply each spring/ summer growing period. Lifting and separating bulbs (particularly tulips) is worthwhile if you want to spread them in other parts of the garden or if you feel they are getting overcrowded in their existing location.
