Women’s Day Lunch Celebration Of ‘Girl Power’ The Phoenix’s lunch at the Bowling Club on Thursday to celebrate women world-wide was a fantastic display of ‘girl power’. 48 women from near and far attended including the Canowindra High and Canowindra Public School Principals who were accompanied by students from Canowindra High. Phoenix Editor Rhi Quinn opened the event and was followed by First Speaker, Tamara James, from our sponsor PulseHR, who spoke of women in the workforce. A delicious frittata was served up by Kylie Lawrence which was followed by the introduction of our Guest Speaker, Ailsa Pottie, who delivered an interesting, enlightening and informative speech. Ailsa is the sister of Dr Catherine Hamlin, who formed the charity we raised money for at the event, and had many interesting tales to tell of young girls who had been treated at

the hospital in Ethiopia and gone on to work there… with some eventually becoming midwives and surgeons. After a dessert choice of strawberry or banoffee cheesecakes the raffle prizes donated by local businesses were handed out. In total $500 was raised for the charity Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (Australia), which will go towards women who suffer from complications after an obstructed labour. We would like to thank Ailsa for her wonderful speech, PulseHR and First Choice for sponsoring the event, Kylie Lawrence for catering, the Bowling Club for letting us use the space for free, the businesses who kindly donated raffle prizes and thank you to all the ladies who came along and showed their support for women all over the world and for this worthwhile charity. Bring on next year! By Rhi Quinn

Dear Editor, In Letters, issue 331 (Thursday 26 February, 2015) of The Canowindra Phoenix, Robert Sherwood has put forward the rather glib comment strongly supporting construction of the proposed Cranky Rock Dam. This is on the premise that “it was as logical in the 1950s as it is today” and “why not get on with it and stop prevaricating”. May I point out to your readers that the 1950’s logic, to which Mr Sherwood refers, is no longer applicable or valid today. Worldwide, in the 21st Century, we note the increasing stress and failure of ecosystems and the rising controversy associated with human interference with the arterial flow of natural waterways. An example of ecosystem collapse is the case of Easter Island, which led to the demise of that civilisation. A parallel is often drawn between Easter Island and the planet today. I believe that the prevarication which he suggests is occurring is actually deep and careful assessment of this proposal. Dams frequently

do not provide the outcome initially promised, when weighed against the enormous cost of construction. Additionally, for a number of reasons dams are another of the many threats to which our ecosystems are exposed. Among other threats are overpopulation and deforestation, which in turn lead to climate change. Mr Sherwood has already pointed out one environmental problem with the Cranky Rock proposal, that of flood mitigation restricting the deposition of pasture enriching silt downstream. This is only one of the many problems associated with this proposal and dams are certainly no longer the flavour of the month in enlightened environmental circles. Dams must be considered as an experiment, the results of which may not being fully evident for perhaps hundreds of years. It may be time to consider that if, as humans, we can’t control the level of rainfall then perhaps we should carefully assess whether we should be aiming for population and industrial expansion in areas where the amount of water is the limiting factor rather than just shifting the problem by building another dam. The other option is to secure and conserve water by means other than construction of a new dam on the Belubula and thinking a lot smarter than mere bulldozer mentality. Regards Rob Glenn, Canowindra

Thank you from the President of Last Saturday night saw the return of the 100 mile dinner to Gaskill Street and was the culmination of many months of work from the Canowindra community and the Canowindra@home Committee. Our famous bendy main street was jumping…… there was wonderful local food and wine, fantastic music and an amazing feeling and sense of community which was unmatched. This event, like the others has worked because it is supported by the whole community. Canowindra@home is committed to helping our town and the businesses and community grow and prosper through events like these. The Canowindra@home committee would especially like to thank the over 50 volunteers who packed and unpacked trucks, set tables (and made sure they were straight!), served guests, hung lanterns - this list could go on. Also thank you to the business community for helping make the night a success by decorating their shops, opening their businesses and giving us access to their shops, driveways, car parks, cool rooms, power and helped in so many other ways. Canowindra Bus Stop Make Over- Member for Orange, Andrew Gee was in town on Friday to announce that $9,220 will go towards an upgrade for our worn down bus shelter under the latest round of the NSW Government’s Regional Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grants Scheme. Mr Gee was joined by Mr Hopkins and Greg Treavors of Cabonne Council to make the announcement. “I’m pleased that Canowindra will benefit from this funding which will be delivered in partnership with Cabonne Shire Council,” Mr Gee said, “the funding will be used to upgrade the bus shelter on Blatchford Street, opposite the Canowindra Services Club, with Council contributing $1,000 towards the $10,220 project.” Hours Extended For Online Homework Help- ‘yourtutor’- an online help service for homework haters, has been growing in popularity. So much so, the opening hours have been extended to 3pm -10pm, Sunday-Friday. “Term 1 can be overwhelming for many families”, says Canowindra Library Officer Rossanne Holmes “especially those with kids just starting high school this year, or heading into senior school and dealing with new workloads…that’s why we’ve extended the hours- so when a student is stuck on a

Crowe Horwath Function- Local business owners and farmers gathered at the Old Vic Inn on Tuesday night to hear a presentation by John Thompson and Ivan Cunial from Crowe Horwath and Grant Chamberlain of Garden & Montgomerie. Crowe Horwath will be visiting Canowindra once a month to meet with local people in relation to any issues they may have regarding taxation, asset protection, super funds and pensions and cloud computing. Grant covered the areas of succession planning, which is basically a review of options to a family or business when making a decision about their future. Cloud computing was also discussed and seems to be the way of the future. Ivan is the expert and can assist the transition from what you’re currently using to Xero, Quickbooks or MYOB. Engagement Party- Luke Watt and Carissa Andrews celebrated their engagement with family and friends at the Imperial Hotel in Cowra over the weekend. The happy couple both gave speeches to the attendees along with an emotional speech from the father of the bride-to-be and a funny one from father of the groom-to-be, Peter Watt. We wish you both all the best in your future together.

THE LOFT FASHION HOUSE

Over 35 years of excellence in fashion

Young may be the town of cherries but its Lambing Flat Chinese Festival is growing in standing as one of this year’s must attend events. Steeped in history, the March festival is the second of its kind and is named after ‘Lambing Flat’ the town infamous for the riots staged by European miners against their Chinese counterparts in 1861. The festival is a celebration of Chinese culture and art and will feature calligraphy, music, reenactments and most electrifying of all, lion dancers. This world class dance spectacle will captivate crowds with the strength and skill of the performers and form the pinnacle of a thrilling festival program in whirls of vibrant colour and explosions of movement. “It’s going to be breathtaking” says Tourism Manager David Newberry, “I urge everyone to get to Anderson Park and enjoy this amazing aerial feat.” The Festival will commence on Saturday 21st March. The Little Cherry Tree contains ‘lots of goodies for your little buds and blossoms’. This endearing shop on Boorowa Street is owned by Rachael Moore who has a little family of her own. The name was inspired by the fruit Young is famous for, “We have cherries in Young so that part of the name came from that, original!” joked Rachael, “and the shop came about because I wanted to do something for myself after my baby went off to school. It began online and progressed to

what we have now.” Stocking Brands such as Penny Scallan Designs, Monstar Kids, Minifin and Tiger Tribe, Little Cherry Tree evolved from a love of finding gorgeous wares. The Loft Fashion House and Finishing Touch Décor Young are owned by husband and wife, Helen and Greg Walker and stand side by side on Boorowa Street. With over thirty years of experience in retail, the pair have knowledge that encompasses all aspects of home wares. Finishing Touch celebrated its first birthday recently on the 1st March and stocks a range of furniture, lamps, jewellery, handbags and occasional tables. “What makes this shop unique is the huge amount of art from artists around the world we have on offer at reasonable prices” says Greg, “we stock hard to find pieces for the home.” Fragrance Delight Candles is a sweetsmelling shop owned by a sweet lady. Melissa Gallop creates her own natural soy wax candles and melts, along with palm wax pillar candles, votives, salt lamps and oil burners. The shop also stocks scrumptious soaps such as ‘champagne and strawberries’ and ‘black raspberry’, tumbled gemstone necklaces, dream catchers, prints and tea lights… everything to create a gentle ambience in your newly perfumed home. Stock is updated regularly meaning there’s something new every time you visit! Say hello to Melissa today at 103 Boorowa Street.

Mudgee The name Mudgee is said to be derived from the Wiradjuri word ‘mou-gee’- which means ‘contented’ and it’s hard not to feel content when seeing what Mudgee has to offer the weary traveller or inquisitive tourist. Childhood home of one of Australia’s most recognised poets; Henry Lawson, we took a walk around Mudgee’s streets and chatted to business owners to get a feel of the town on the edge of the Sydney Basin… Owner of Alby & Esthers, Lara, believes something special happens when people break bread together. Named after two of her four grandparents who loved family meals around the table, this coffee house and wine bar has been built on a base of nostalgic warmth and love. The menu is seasonally dictated so is forever changing with the weather, the coffee is delicious and locally roasted by Mark Newman of Yarrabin Road Roasters and

the wines are chosen from across the local region to complement and enhance your experience. The philosophy at Alby & Esther’s is simple, ‘make everything uncomplicated but delicious’. If this sounds like your style of dining, Lara and Duncan look forward to seeing you soon down the Alley at 61 Market Street. Wild Oats Pavilion is one of Mudgee’s premier cafés and function spaces. Set among the vines of the iconic Robert Oatley vineyard, Wild Oats Pavilion showcases the best of what the Mudgee region has to offer with a premium experience to match. Specialised menus promoting regional and seasonal produce complement wines produced on site. Wild Oats Pavilion provides just the right space for an intimate gathering, wedding bonanza, business function or a relaxed weekend meal while buzzing with the personality and charm of the region’s oldest winery. Wild Oats Pavilion creates modern cuisine with exceptional care, served in impeccable style

surrounded by an unbeaten view. Described as ‘the jewel in Mudgee’s crown’ this is the obvious choice for an event destination. As the third largest grape producing region in NSW, Mudgee is a popular destination for wine enthusiasts. Gooree Park Wine’s origins date back some 34 years when Filipino businessman, Eduardo Cojuangco, realised his agricultural dreams by purchasing three historic properties in Australia, forming what is now known as ‘Goree Park’. Today the estate has the enviable reputation as one of the country’s leading thoroughbred breeding grounds and with one of the largest vineyards in Mudgee Goree is growing in skill and standing at crafting thoroughbred wines. Just ten minutes from the town centre, the property boasts a cellar door on-site within the iconic white fences and hosts wine tours, a wine club and events such as Stud Tours and Bubbly Breakfast at the Track and Wine & Wagyu BBQ, the next one being on the 5th April.

Elegantly fusing modern vintage with industrial pieces, Loft Furniture was a perfect fit for the Mudgee customer, the unique pieces working for both the modern home and more traditional country style houses. Mudgee owner Kellie Carlos was inspired by the shop and the furniture collection for its ability to adapt to customer’s individual style, allowing them to create a home which captured the

Mudgee

true essence of themselves. Tucked slightly off the beaten track of the quaint tree-lined main street of the country town, Kellie has created a beautiful, welcoming environment that immediately makes you feel at home. Soft scarves, cushions and throw rugs add warmth to the industrial furniture pieces while stylish and practical home wares from white marble cheeseboards to vintage glassware, fill every corner of the shop. Why not pop in and see how Kellie can spruce up your style at 13a Lewis Street. Mudgee, the contented town, is a modern metropolis condensed into a countryside

hamlet. We will leave you with the words from a poem by Henry Lawson about Eurunderee, a locality of the Mudgee region… On the knolls where the vineyards and fruitgardens are There’s a beauty that even the drought cannot mar; For I noticed it oft, in the days that are lost, As I trod on the siding where lingered the frost, When the shadows of night from the gullies were gone And the hills in the background were flushed by the dawn.

know were coming.” The dance floor was crowded with diners dancing to the rhythm of the music makers , Cecelia Rochelli and Trouble with Johny band ,”we had trouble getting people to sit for the next course! ” Event Manager Trudie Weyman exclaimed. Music of Friends Come To Canowindra Chamber music is traditionally composed for a small group of instruments, a group that could fit ‘in the palace chamber’ if you will. For well over 200 years, this form of classical music has been played in homes and recital halls. Playing chamber music requires unique musical and social skills that differ from playing solo or in large orchestral symphonic compositions. Goethe described chamber music as ‘four rational people conversing’ this conversational handle has continually emerged throughout the history of the music from the 18th century to the present. The analogy of conversation is at the core of the upcoming concert series by the Mitchell String Quartet. The ensemble members, Andrew Baker, Nicholas Newell, Fiona Thompson and Sybbi

Western Challenge League Tag Carnival

12 teams have entered the Western Challenge Ladies League Tag Carnival at Tom Clyburn Oval on the 15th March. It’s shaping up to be a great day with some of the finest female athletes in the Central West showcasing their skills and clubs from Group 10, Group 11 and the Woodbridge Cup taking part. The Challenge began in 2011 as the inaugural tournament which was won by Canowindra Tigers. In 2012 Bathurst St Pats took the trophy, 2013 was Orange Hawks turn to win and 2014 saw Orange Cyms dominate the day. A convener of the event, Andrew Pull, says “this year I can’t pick a winner but really like Lithgow as an outsider, with Orange Cyms, Eugowra and Dubbo Westside all top seeds and equal favourites for the day.” This year the tournament has changed from a Saturday to a Sunday to support the NRL game at Bathurst Saturday afternoon. With the Western Challenge a fitting finale to a great weekend. Free entry to the event with kick off at 10.30am this weekend!

Men’s Bowls

Two games were played on the weekend. A major single between Dool and Peter Taylor saw Peter leading 6-3 after 6 ends but Dool got the win in the end with 31-6. Minor single between Nigel Knight and Bob Bates saw Bob eventually win the game 31-26. Mad Dog Milburn didn’t want to faze Sparky the Claw in ‘Cock Of The Walk’, based on fear Milburn had to forfeit. The Claw had to play Heather, ‘Barry’s Curse’, in the next game which made The Claw a very temporary Cock going down to Barry’s curse 15-12. Next Saturday Major Singles Barney v’s Max marker Vinnie Sunday Cyril v’s Graham marker Nigel.
