Gee Whizz! Andrew Re-Elected For Second Term Running Andrew Gee is a happy man this week as he returns once again as the Member for Orange with a clean sweep of booths. In 2011 Mr Gee secured 56.7% of the primary vote and in this Saturday’s poll had secured over 65%, showing that he’s still a popular man in the world of politics. “There were a couple of key factors in play for this election. The first was the new parts of the electorate – Canowindra, Forbes, Parkes, and the western districts. They came into the electorate for the first time and how they voted was always going to be very important. The strength of their support was as humbling as it was appreciated” said Mr Gee, “I feel very privileged by the faith they have placed in me. It’s a big responsibility and I intend to re-pay that faith by continuing to work

hard and delivering the services and infrastructure that country people need. I want to build on the momentum we’ve started over the past four years,” he said. As Mr Gee travelled around the new parts of the electorate, he noted that people wanted a member who was accessible, proactive and who was there for them when needed. “This is the type of member I intend to be for them” says Andrew, “I have always stood up and fought for the communities I have represented and I’ll be there for them as well.” Mr Gee acknowledged his fellow candidates and thanked them for their contribution to the political debate, wishing them well for the future. Here’s to another four year’s with Mr Gee! By Rhi Quinn

Dear Editor, It is an unfortunate ecological accident of history that modern day people in western civilisation think industrially rather than ecologically. People in our day tend to kill ‘weeds’ that nature sends to us as ‘FREE’ medication for depleted soils. Soils that we as modern day people remove all life from, chemically and physically. People also tend to consider that making dams to hold water that we can all ‘SEE’ as surface storage, makes more available water at their own cost, locally. Even the simplest experiment can demonstrate that; where water is measured coming into a dam, at any scale, the litres of water are always greater than litres of water measured over the spillway, out of a dam. Evaporation and leaching results in up to ninety per cent water loss from any surface storage of water -- that is not densely vegetated (or covered as a house tank). Transpiration being less than evaporation, and growing vegetation brings in MORE atmospheric moisture and stores it locally. The less vegetation growing all the year through over whole landscapes, the MORE intense and longer the droughts that occur. By insuring that all living, dead and decaying species (Multiples of plants and animals species living and dying) are used as nature intends, to improve soil, the MORE water is stored in soil and MORE water is infiltrated and retained as in-ground water, over time. In-ground water is ‘away from evaporation’ and available to plant roots and water then seeps slowly into streams, rivers and pools. The main reason any continent loses soil and water as erosion is the export of natural resources by any means. By sheet and gulley
erosion, by smoke or by boat -- all of which is EROSION OF OUR NATURAL RESOURCES. Our present day civilisation in Australia is based upon the export of our natural resources; that is terminal. Governments like to build dams and cities because people want MORE employment and MORE water and resources supplied to them and government can charge MORE for the supply of water and resources, (and tax employment), that once belonged to the natural ecosystem we live in, with our plants and animals as the whole biological community that all need food and water, for they are themselves ‘self-replacing’ food and water for all species present. It is also interesting that in America over the last few years, one hundred and forty dams the size of our Central West dams, that were built since the nineteen thirties, have been removed because the local people now realise than less available water is the only result of damming wild rivers and streams. Up until the present era, civilisation based upon the building of vegetation bare cities and supply landscapes, have started where there were plenty of natural resources and collapsed when the resources were depleted. So what will Australians do now in a more enlightened age? Paul Newell

Dear Editor, I woud just like to say many thanks and lots of country kindness to Tony, Damo and Annie who assisted in retrieving my keys when I accidentally locked myself out of my accommodation after only being in town less than 24 hours! Also last but by no means least Jane who lent me her car to commute to work, particularly evening shifts. I have been overwhelmed by your generosity and trust. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kind deeds.
life. Station Commander, Billy Paul, said “A fire can take hold in just three minutes, filling your home with deadly smoke.”If you need help checking or replacing the battery in your smoke alarm, contact Canowindra Fire Station on 63441607 and ask about the Smoke Alarm and Battery Replacement program. New Broadband Has Thumbs Up From Local Farmer- Chris Groves, a farmer from Billimari, says new fast broadband has made his business and home life much easier. “Being only 10km from Cowra, we weren’t that isolated, but technology-wise, we were. We hooked up to the NBN last December and its fantastic” he said. There are now seven NBN towers around Canowindra and Cowra that have gone live and with two more due to be activated this year fast broadband will be coming for everyone in the district. Business Bus Visit- The Small Biz Bus visited Canowindra last week to help local business owners with advice on everything from taxations to licenses. Wayne Sunderland is one of the two advisors of the bus based in Orange who visits community towns where there isn’t a service available. “Sessions last around 45 minutes and the first two visits are free. We can help people with anything they don’t understand in the world of business” says Wayne, who formerly worked as a ATO Officer.

Hello Rhi, It seems Mark Brown in Letters 335 has misunderstood my position on the mooted dam at Cranky Rock. I said that I think we should get on with the construction, then pointed out later that that the engineering should take account of silting so that the two matters of natural fertiliser still being distributed onto the river flats downstream and that silting up did not occur inside the dam from upstream waters. It appears that whimsy and sarcasm are no longer in the lexicon of most people who still perhaps think that grammar is their mothers mum. Regards Bob Sherwood

Canowindra Churches are recognising Easter as an “Aussie Family Celebration”, with thanks to the support of Fusion Orange. This year’s festival theme is ‘Light brings Life.’ Light is important in all aspects of life. From our technology to our physiology to our spiritually, we are creatures dependent on light.
Good Friday - par 3 event. Open 12pm to 10pm, no take away alcohol Easter Saturday - Normal hours Easter Sunday- 3 person ambrose Flannery family day Easter Monday- Open 12pm - 8pm
In the Good Book and in any dictionary definition, ‘light’ includes understanding of a problem or mystery or understanding itself. Of Jesus it was said, ‘His life was the light of people and his light shone in the darkness.’ There was something about his life that brought to light God is for real and He can be known. Jesus was clear about this and he even said to one of the gathered crowds, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’ This year is the first Easter Family Festival at Morris Park, on Saturday April 4th from 11 am to 2 pm. It is packed full of activities to make a fun afternoon. There will be a sausage sizzle, refreshments, balloons, face painting, bubble blowing, craft activities, a jumping castle and Jaffa smasher. There will also be water bomb volley-ball and parachute games for the energetic. Throughout the day be sure to catch performances of song, dance and skits by local artists. The simple and fun activities are designed for everyone to be involved. For those who prefer a quieter spot, there is the tea and coffee tent serving delicious home baked biscuits. Also cool drinks and coffee cart. All activities and the refreshments are free thanks to the generosity of local churches and businesses in Canowindra. Plan to come and bring a picnic lunch with the family. By Revd Jono Williams, Parish Priest Cooperating parishes of the Anglican and Uniting Churches of Canowindra

A Sad Goodbye to Canowindra After buying Sunnyvale in 1993 and moving to Canowindra in 2005, Paul and Pauline Laurie are packing up shop and moving to the Sunshine Coast after a decade of local living. Sunnyvale, which includes 433 acres, was sold to Wayne and Anne Lamb of the Golden Gate Horse Stud. Paul and Pauline moved here from the Southern Highlands over 10 years ago, seeking a property that would be drought proof. Unfortunately they hit nine years of drought in this area and are saddened to once again see the countryside so dry. Paul made a living running Angus Cows, crossing them with Romagnola, Limousin and Angus bulls. He sold off his herd in 2009 to concentrate on growing crops including sowing canola, wheats, oats and barley, supplemented by 360 first cross ewes. The couple say they are sad to say goodbye to all of their Canowindra friends, especially Pauline’s golfing buddies. The couple both feel that Canowindra has been very supportive of them and will miss the family and friends they are leaving behind. “We would like to wish Wayne and Anne all the best in taking over Sunnyvale” said Paul.

Balloon Challenge Launches At Age Of Fishes “when you have a festival that attracts about 15,000 people who spend almost $2 million in a small country town, it’s no ordinary event. But when that festival develops into a truly international event, you have something very special and that’s exactly what the Canowindra Challenge is.” The Council allocated $20,000 from its Events Assistance Program to the Challenge and are certain it’s a sound investment. The challenge promises to be a spectacle of colour, entertainment, air and fire. A big announcement this year is that the Canowindra Challenge has had their formal bid accepted in Switzerland by the Federal Aeronautique Internationale to bid for the rights to the Women’s World Championships in 2018. Women from 50 countries will be competing in Canowindra in 2017 as a lead in for the competition. This year we even have two world champions plus the women’s world champion competing, so we are certainly attracting the high flyers to the event! By Rhi Quinn

Hot air balloons are the oldest successful human flight carrying technology with the first voyage taking place all the way back in 1783 and today the sport still manages to capture the imagination, with over 10,000 people expected to flock to the Balloon Glow on the 18th April. The event will also entice pilots from all over the world who will pit their skills against Australia’s best when the Challenge is staged from 12-19thApril. Mayor Michael Hayes said in his speech,

Be Entertained To commemorate the up and coming Anzac Day and 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landing HIT productions presents “The One Day of the Year”, at Orange Civic Theatre on Thursday April 9th at 8pm. This Australian Classic looks at our national legends through generations and the changing of character through time. War Veterans, Alf Cooke and Wacka Dawson celebrate Anzac Day with a sense of national pride but in contrast for Alf’s son, Hughie, Anzac day has a very different meaning, bringing disrepute to the diggers as Hughie has a one too many at the pub. When the play was first released in the sixties it had policeman guarding the stage doors to ward off the outraged public, a controversial play in its time bought to life again as a mod-
ern classic. If you are more of a bookworm, internationally renowned actress Miriam Margoyles is in Australia on her world premiere tour and presents “The Importance of being Miriam” at Orange Civic Theatre, on April 28th at 8pm. This will be the only performance in the Central West. The show brings many characters to the stage through literature and music including, Jane Austen’s Lady Catherine de Bourgh (Pride and Prejudice), Mrs Corney and Mr Bumble from Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, are amongst the performance. The award winning star is joined on stage by classical pianist, John Martin and together they are sure to delight audiences.

A Great Track For Family And Friends To Ride Celebrating their 21st year as a club, original members Ann-Maree Watson, Jenny Henderson and Michelle Idiens still ride today with the Gooloogong Trail Riding Club. Kirsty Combe, a member since 2008 said, “The ladies used to ride with their children and now they are riding with their grandchildren. It is great to see such a great mixture of ages that come along.” If you own a horse and love to ride there is a great opportunity to join the Gooloogong Trail Riding Club. Members meet on the fourth Sunday of every month often setting off on a new trail each time, visiting some spectacular destinations like Farleigh’s Reserve near Cowra where riders stop by the river for lunch and the horses cool off before the return home. The Gooloogong Club is registered with the Australian Trail Horse Riding Association (ATHRA) and after joining with Gooloogong,
members can also enjoy other local trail riding clubs registered with ATHRA such as Cowra and Orange for free. The Sunday rides are usually around 20 kilometres with a break for lunch. The club also host camp overs that run twice yearly. During camp overs there are some light hearted challenges that take place, for instance small jumps, riding through water and tackling steep inclines. The next camp over is set for May this year. Kirsty has been riding ever since she was 5 years old and finds her life is too busy to ride everyday like she used to, “I set aside the date on my calendar for the whole year ahead as it is my time out, I get to be amongst likeminded people, have loads of fun in a non-competitive environment and I have made many new friends over the years, I just love it.” By Michelle McCormack
Last Friday Canowindra Pre-School once again hosted a successful shopping night fundraiser. Around fifty people enjoyed the shopping experience with approximately 25 stalls including Sarah Maynard’s MOOZO prints, photography by Sarah Windus from Capturing the Moment, Meeraboo candles by Jess Jenkins and an assortment of jewellery, gardening and other stalls. Parents cooked a variety of fabulous curries for the guests which many enjoyed with their complimentary glass of bubbly. Local musicians, Stacey and Megan, provided entertainment and several raffles were held with the prize winners enjoying mystery bags full of surprise goodies. Rachael Arnott, Vice President of the P&C said, “The night was a great success with a lovely crowd of people. This is our third shopping night and it is growing each time, this year we had to put some of the stalls outside and it is great that more people are coming along each time, both to enjoy the night and to have a stall.” The event raised $1500 and will provide a great number of valuable resources. How long have you lived in Canowindra? I came here when I was 7 and have been here ever since and I was 84 last Wednesday! Where did you work? I left school at 14 and 8 months and went to work for Dad cutting burrs and digging out rabbits. It was big wages too, 2 bob a day! Then after that I went onto farming and shearing, breaking horses in. Where is your favourite place? Out on the farm down Longs Corner Road Hobbies? I played a bit of golf, I like to read now mainly horse and dog books. I got Kurt Fearnleys book for Christmas that was a good read. How do you like your coffee? I can take it or leave it, prefer a nice cup of tea. Worst habit? Talking too much I guess! Who would you like to have dinner with? My son and daughters and their families. Do you have any pets? I’ve got a Jack Russell, Cocoa, and her husband (haha) Also got some sheepdogs out on the farm. We won a sheepdog trial once back in 1965!

Mitchell Conservatorium Celebrating 37 years of providing live music, music education and concerts in the Central West, the Mitchell Conservatorium is raising the bar yet again with their upcoming concerts, ‘Two Cellos’ and ‘Beethoven And Beyond’. Beethoven and Beyond The dramatic and oft-tempestuous Sonatas of Beethoven, to the stained glass abstraction of Takemitsu this upcoming Mitchell Conservatorium solo piano concert with Cindy Fox, encompasses the wealth of possibilities that the piano has to offer. Cindy Fox is currently a teacher at the Mitchell Conservatorium and is also a sought after accompanist and chamber musician, engaged by both students and professionals throughout the Central West. She has featured as a soloist with the Bathurst Chamber Orchestra as well as a member of the Mitchell Chamber Orchestra who made their debut in 2014 with the specially commissioned original contemporary work; Touchstones Song Cycle conducted by Richard Gill OAM at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. This current series of concerts allow Cindy to delve into her performance persona and delight audiences with skill and emotive solo piano. Two Cellos Georg Mertens and Ella Jamieson will perform No 5 and 9 from the beautiful 9 cello Sonatas by Vivaldi, the most beloved of Italian composers. The Sonatas are shared with cello Duo No 1 by August Kummer, the king of Classical cello duo music, injecting an amazing inventiveness and wit into the interactive collaboration of the cellos, along with J.S.Bach’s, Prelude, Allemande and Bourree from Lute Suite No 1, transcribed by Georg for two cellos – a world premiere!

Pythons Hanging Out For Season To Start
IMAGE: New President Rowly will continue boards good work
New Golf Club President Tees Off Canowindra Golf Club has a new President in Rowland McCall, better known as Rowly to his mates. Rowly has lived just up the road from the Golf Club for five years, “it’s great because I can just go down the road, grab a cart and go golfing!” He’s a keen player of the sport with a handicap of 16. Originally from the Blue Mountains, Rowly spent 30 years in Queensland and a couple on Norfolk Island where he met a Canowindra lady. They bought a bakery together and ran it for ten years, eventually moving to Canowindra to care for his partners mum. The couple are

both golf lovers with Rowly’s partner, Roslyn, the Captain of the ladies golf. Now retired, Rowly is looking forward to his new position as President though isn’t planning any radical changes. “The board was very good last year, they completed a lot of projects and maintenance programmes. Charlie put his heart and soul into it” he said. “I’m not going to change much at all I just want to finish what they began. The Board put the plans in place so I’ll try and see them through.”
The Pythons have wasted no time in trying out the new King Kong equipment at the Fitness Path. Monkeying around at a training session last week, they all gave it the thumbs up. The club has been very supportive of the project over the last few years, raising thousands of dollars toward the path and equipment. Coach Daniel Bowd is thrilled with the path and the contribution the equipment makes towards not only general fitness of the community but getting players fit for the season. “We have incorporated using the equipment in our training sessions and they add a good variety to out fitness sessions”, he said. Training is on Tuesdays and Thursday from 6.30 – 8.00pm with the first game being played against Molong on the Anzac weekend. By Julie Middleton

IMAGE: Pythons came out on top against the Wagga Aggies
Canowindra Pythons
The Pythons would like to thank the Cowra Eagles and Wagga Aggies for the trial match on Saturday. The Canowindra boys came out firing from the first and led 10-0 with tries from Jack Knight and Ben Schaefer though both conversions went astray. In the 2nd and 3rd players shifted positions and Jacob Wren did well in his first game of rugby. New python Clayton Maynard also played well and will be an asset to the team. In the last 3rd a few cameo appearances occurred, first Mark ‘Bomber’ Brown the assistant coach thought he was benefitting from Doug Rice’s fitness sessions, it was said his last game was on the win against Grenfell and he wanted to finish in the forwards. Next Adam ‘Smash’ Nash came on after a year on the sideline coaching the Pythons. Todd Wyburn (who wasn’t meant to play) also couldn’t help himself and had to have one pre-final run for the Pythons before him and Rhi head overseas. The younger and fitter aggies lost to the Pythons final score 10-5. Coach Daniel Bowd said he was pleased with the hit out and is looking forward to the next trial on 18th April before the Balloon Glow.

With 4 players completing 9 holes, the 9 hole competition winner was Margie Sharpe. It is great
