Pilots Battle Bad Weather for Balloon Glow Balloonists battled against howling winds and downpours of rain on Saturday evening at the Balloon Glow Spectacular, trying their hardest to give the soggy crowd what they came for. Crews were fighting hard against the elements to keep the balloons under control. A short intermission in the weather, where the wind disappeared and the rain briefly subsided, gave balloon crews the opportunity they needed to set up in fair conditions, but as the balloons began to inflate, the gathering storm clouds gave out. Buckets of rain showered down, drenching spectators, the balloons and their respective crews. A big gust of wind came, and the first balloon came down. Within minutes all ten were deflating, as much for the safety of the balloons as for the crew members and spectators in attendance. “Those pilots should get medals,” said event organiser and local hot air ballooning enthusiast Jan Kerr. “The weather was absolutely hor-
rible, and what they did was fantastic. I can’t praise them enough for doing their best to get the balloons up.” While the glow itself was short lived, the sheer determination of the balloon crews to take on the weather and light the balloons up for the crowd is a demonstration of how much this event, and the town of Canowindra means to them. “I have so much praise for the pilots. They gave something really special to the public,” said Jan Kerr. Scheduled entertainment was cancelled, including the much anticipated fire dancing act, as the stage was too wet and slippery for the dancers, much to the disappointment of both spectators and organisers. Locals and visitors to the town had been looking forward to the popular, annual family event, and thousands of people still came through the gates despite the unfavourable weather. By Rosi Broom

Letters Hello Editor, I am wondering if anyone ever stops to think of the few people who got the balloons going in Canowindra. The late Michael Sutton and several others were the pioneers who started what is now a successful time for Canowindra. Michael got the gas supplies going for Canowindra and serviced the balloonists of the time. My husband and I (as a present) and other family members had a flight in October 1996, and if was truly wonderful. We have always appreciated what Michael did for the balloonists and their customers and Canowindra at the time. Margaret H White

IMAGE: Vintage Drivers’ Club of Australia comes to Canowindra
The Vintage Drivers’ Club came through town earlier this week with around 40 cars from 1915-1930, mostly Model A Fords. The group of vintage motoring enthusiasts are travelling 1000km on an ‘Endurance Rally’ through NSW before finishing back in Victoria where they started. A representative of the group said that rallies like these were ‘a test of our strength as well as the car’s strength’. The group will head to Bathurst next, then Tumut and Albury. The Canowindra Phoenix Photography Competition has officially closed. Many excellent photos were entered, and it was difficult to pick the winners. Anna Wensing won the Under 16’s competition, and Colin Pryor took out the Over 16’s. The winners will be presented with their winning photo professionally framed, and have the chance to do a family sitting with Sarah Windus of CTM Photography. Thank you to everyone who got on board. Moyne Aged Care Plus will once again be holding their fundraising fete on Saturday 2nd May at 10.30am. Everyone is invited to attend. Anybody who would like to donate to the fete or volunteer, please contact Melissa or Amber Meurs on 63441475. Adopt-A-Granny: Nobody should spend Mother’s Day alone, and if you want to do a good deed for someone who might be by themselves this May, why not register for our Adopt-A-Granny program? You get the
chance to brighten someone’s day by taking them to the Canowindra Bowling Club for afternoon tea and a hilarious Mother’s Day Matinee. There are no age restrictions; you don’t even have to be a granny! The initiative of Tommy Jeffs’ and the Canowindra Phoenix is intended as a community service to make sure nobody is alone this Mother’s Day. New scholarship program: The NSW Government has created a new scheme to develop young artistic talent through a regional program, including 25 NSW Young Regional Artist Scholarships valued at $10,000 each. Applications are open until June 11th, for artists and arts workers from any art form aged 18 to 25. The aim of the project is to help unlock the potential of young artists and art workers in regional areas. For more information or to apply for a NSW Young Regional Artists Scholarship, visit: www.arts.nsw.gov.au Vets caution owners to prevent parasites in puppies. The Australian Veterinary Association is urging dog owners to consider heartworm in the lead up to winter. Heartworm is a parasite that can be passed between animals by the bite of a mosquito, and heavy rains increase the risk of disease. It is a serious disease and can be deadly. Take care of your best furry friend; prevent heartworm with a yearly injection or monthly tablets. If you think your dog may be infected, talk to your vet immediately. Cabonne and Cowra Councils are rolling out a new, fully-integrated on-line system which will streamline job applications and recruitment. From late-April, the Councils will be using a web-based system, enabling candidates to complete job applications from any device linked to the internet. The new system will help the Councils to communicate more effectively and efficiently with job applicants, and after the system is introduced, the Council will no longer be accepting hard-copy applications, reducing paper waste. The Canowindra RSL Sub Branch would like to extend an invitation to all Canowindra resi-
dents and visitors to join them in commemorating Anzac Day again this year, commencing with the Dawn Service in Memorial Park, Gaskill Street at 6am. Breakfast will follow in the Nangar room of Canowindra Services and Citizen Club. All are welcome. The main service will commence with a march along Gaskill Street, and those wishing to join are asked to assemble in Tilga St, near the Junction Hotel at 10:30am. Any queries, please contact Mike Harrison on 0427 640 293. Federal Member John Cobb is calling on residents to have their say about the best ways to prevent, treat and cure diabetes in a national consultation process aimed to help the development of a National Diabetes Strategy. More than one million Australians suffer from Diabetes, including an estimated 400,000 in NSW. For more information, or to have your say, visit https://consultations. health.gov.au before Friday May 17th. The Canowindra Public School Trivia Night was a huge success. A great night was had by all, and the event raised funds for the school canteen upgrade. A special thanks to all the business who got involved. Canowindra has a new arrival! Australians consumed 2.4kg of coffee a year, or about 9.2 cups a week, spending an average of $165 annually on their brews. With the chilly season upon us, those statistics will no doubt increase, for who can deny the comfort of a warm cup of coffee between cold hands on a wet or frosty morning? Fish River Roasters offer a tantalising range of coffee to choose from, such as the highly competitive and custom Tiger Snake Blend – medal winner at the Golden Bean Competition, and cultural flavour combination. Peter doesn’t stop at coffee either. He also sells from a long list of tea, chocolate goodies and chai for those who aren’t big coffee fans. These beans are a must-try for any coffee connoisseur, and anyone with a passion for local produce. You can find the Fish River roasts in many cafes across the Central West, including Canowindra’s Deli Lama and Orange hotspots Green Apple Bar, Simply Nile and Venue Café. By Rosi Broom

Living the Caffeine Dream Twenty minutes out of Bathurst, Peter Harrison is roasting coffee beans for busy cafes and thirsty coffee enthusiasts all over the Central West. The boutique coffee company is a tribute to his enthusiasm for the perfect coffee, no matter how you like it. Peter’s love affair with coffee began after moving overseas in the early 90’s and working in the hospitality industry in London. Peter met up with some Italians who taught him how to make good espresso, and a passionate Kiwi who just loved coffee. His fate was sealed. In 1999, two years after returning to Australia, Peter began roasting coffee in his Bathurst café, which really got the custom-
ers’ attention. He moved his family to Fish River and there evolved the brand Fish River Roasters, which has taken out an incredible 15 awards, and includes Fairtrade, chemical free and organic blends. It is easy to see why customers keep coming back for more: a high quality local company with an interest in sustainability. All over the region, the distinctive smell of fresh roasted coffee is wafting from café doors and windows. Whether you’re bleary eyed and on your way to work or a coffee lover on a mission to find the perfect brew, many people claim they cannot live without their daily caffeine hits. This dynamic performance is said to be intimate and exciting, complete with the best Las Vegas style lighting and a chance for one lucky lady to join the sizzling cowboys onstage. This is not the first time the Sydney Hotshots have been to town, and the last two times they visited, their shows were a sell-out success. It’s the only touring male revue act in the country, and while the line-up often changes, the company have been throwing these parties for nearly twenty years. The Townhouse Tavern is the perfect place to have dinner before the show, and the new managers there are enthusiastic to be bringing the Hotshots out for all the ladies in town. experience in hospitality. He is looking forward to rolling out some big changes, starting with original menu ideas and a new barista, plus a more relaxing and professional atmosphere. He moved to the Central West from North Queensland, and when asked how he liked the change, JD said “I love it here. It’s just like home.” He hopes to reflect to customers his long years in the kitchen by taking pride in the way food is cooked and served under his watch. A new dinner menu will focus on half price meals, with options to customize meal sizes. New flavours and spices with Eastern inspirations and fresh seafood will be on offer. The normal meals they take pride in at the Townhouse are still available including scotch fillet or the lamb with beetroot relish. Interesting new innovations are also on the cards, with online loyalty and ordering apps soon to be launched. These apps will allow customers to track their way to a free coffee, order ahead and pick up on the move. In the bar, new beers and ciders are available on tap, and they now stock a larger selection of imported beer for those who like to try something a little bit different. Improvements are taking this venue to new heights, a diverse hotspot with a reputation for sophistication, great value and service that makes you want to go back again and again. Play pool by the bar, dine in the cosy restaurant, or stay for a romantic evening with your special someone. They also have a huge function room, which is full of personality, and available for wedding, birthday and anniversary celebrations. If you are into sneakers or sandals, chunky or dainty, artistic or elegant: the 2015 fashion season has a shoe style for you! Fashion Week introduced us to a new wave of interesting shoe trends, with clunky heels, loud geometric patterns and retro inspired designs dominating the runway. The theme for trendy toes this year is broad: there are zany shoes, sophisticated shoes, even shoes that are furry, fringed, feathered and laced. Stay comfy and fashionable with these simple styles: The White Sneaker is a back-to-basics trend and a fashion favourite. Team it with denims, leggings or skirts for a simple, yet fashionable look.
For a sophisticated style that won’t have you teetering too much on your toes, opt for the chunky high heel. This versatile shoe is great for a day in the office and a night on the dancefloor. Flats are popular for their versatility and comfortable sophistication. These shoes were made for walking and perfectly polish any look, whether it’s casual, corporate or a special occasion. We Will Remember Them This weekend, Anzac Day reaches a milestone anniversary. 100 years have passed since the Gallipoli landings of the First World War, and a century on, the significance of the date has not been lost on Australians. As a tribute to Australian soldiers, past and present, a commemorative coloured $2 coin has been released, marking this important moment in Australian history. The coin captures the history and service of Australians at war, and features poppies, a symbol of remembrance. It is only the fourth coloured coin ever to enter circulation in Australia. “There will be approximately 1.5 million coins released into circulation over the coming weeks which will provide an opportunity for the public to be able to secure a keepsake for this special occasion,” John Cobb said. The plight of the Anzac is deeply ingrained in us; the battle at Gallipoli lasted for a grueling nine months, and took the lives of 8700 soldiers. 100 years on, the first Anzacs are revered as cultural icons, and national heroes. The legend of the Anzac soldier has been solemnly handed down through generations by families and friends who re-tell the stories, celebrate the survivors and honour those who lost their lives on behalf of our freedom. Like a fingerprint, their legacy is unique to our cultural identity, and every year, many Australians make the humbling pilgrimage to Gallipoli to show their respects at Anzac Cove. For the 100th anniversary, over 42,000 Australians applied for one of 8200 passes to the Dawn Service held in Gallipoli. The poignant commemorations will also be attended by 10 widows of WWI Anzac veterans, school groups and soldiers’ descendants, among others. In Australia, people of all ages across the nation will take the time to pay their respects to the fallen and returned soldiers of war; worldwide Australians stop to unite in a morning of reflection and respect. It was veterans and families of casualties who campaigned for a day of remembrance. Federal MP Angus Taylor said “it is the community which has continued to demand a place and time to remember, to find a way to tell the stories of ordinary men and women who did extraordinary things.” The 100th anniversary is a deeply important commemorative event that will be recognized and celebrated across the country and the world. Here in Canowindra, a 6am Dawn Service will be held in Memorial Park, followed by an open breakfast at Canowindra Services Club and a march along Gaskill Street. John Cobb said Anzac Day is “the day when Australians gather to remember that freedom has a cost and freedom of expression is not something to be taken for granted”; a reminder that the idea of freedom that Anzacs fought and died for deserves to be respected and cherished. “Let us use this time in our history to better understand our strength as a young nation, and in the spirit of the Anzacs, our potential to stand together as a community,” said Angus Taylor. Gaskill Street Tribute A sea of red poppies fills a shopfront window on Gaskill Street, a special Anzac Day tribute to honour war veterans and their families. Among the poppies sit precious photos, genuine medals, wartime propaganda and historical anecdotes; stories of local soldiers which serve as sobering reminders of the sacrifices made by the young men who fought in the First World War. The touching and meaningful idea came about as a result of collaboration between Ross Cleary from the Canowindra Historical
Annual Fete
Society, and Deli Lama’s Tommy Jeffs, who wanted to brighten the street and pay tribute to the town’s wartime history for the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing. Local ladies and residents at Moyne Aged Care helped make the tribute possible by crafting hundreds of handmade poppies from crepe paper, a symbol of remembrance for those who lost their lives. The memorial will be on display over the Anzac commemorative period. By Rosi Broom

OUR Gals Gallipoli Brides Who are they? The 10 women going to Gallipoli on a special free Qantas flight this week are the widows of veterans from the First World War. 115 WWI widows accepted the invitation to Istanbul for the centenary, but only 10 were fit enough to make the journey. They are all aged between 71 and 91, and many are wives of the veterans’ second marriages. Where do they come from? These ladies are from all over Australia. Four are from New South Wales, four are from Queensland, one from Victoria and one from Western Australia. The women had never met before a ceremony, attended by Prime Minister Tony Abbott, at Sydney Airport this week, and described the experience as “bitter-sweet”. What will they do there? The widows and their carers will be attending the commemorative services in Gallipoli, where thousands of Australians will gather to honour those who lost their lives on the Gallipoli campaign in 1915.

Boost For Drug And Alcohol Treatment In The Central West
Do We Stand Alone As A Council? The debate is on now for whether Cabonne Council should merge with Orange City Council or stay as a stand alone Council. Both Councils are undertaking an investigation into the business case for a merger. The Councils want the best for their communities and the work being undertaken in the investigation will provide some guidance on what is the best path. The business case study is being conducted by an independent firm, Morrison Low and the preliminary findings should be available at the two local meetings the Council is holding both in Molong and Canowindra. Cabonne Council’s Communications and Media Officer Dale Jones said all Councils must lodge a submission by 30 June 2015 to show how they will be Fit For the Future. “Cabonne’s present position is to continue as a stand-alone council into the future and to prepare a submission on that basis,” he said. “However a final decision will not be made until Council analyses the findings of the merger business case study and consulta-

tion with the community next month. “Council’s submission will emphasise Cabonne’s strong financial sustainability, scale and capacity and the fact that it will be able to meet the government’s key criteria to be Fit for the Future.” Marj Bollinger, Vice Chairman of the Molong Advancement Group, who wish to save Cabonne as a standalone council are holding a meeting at the Community Hall in Molong on Thursday 21st May. Marj said, “by attending this meeting it is your opportunity as a ratepayer, for you to be seen and your voice heard to prove that you, as one person, can contribute to making the difference between Cabonne standing along or being eaten up by the State Government to become part of Orange.” Prior to this meeting, there will be an information session held at the Canowindra High School Hall, Canowindra on Thursday 14th May starting at 7 pm. All interested parties and Councillors are invited to attend. By Rosi Broom
Federal Member for Calare John Cobb has announced that the Federal Government will again provide more than $2 million to Lyndon Community for three important local projects. This will enable hundreds of residents to have access to the best specialist drug and alcohol treatments services in the central west. A substantial contribution will be made to the Lyndon Community outreach service of $426,00, of which Lyndon House in Canowindra will share the benefits. Lyndon Community CEO Ed Zarnow believes this renewed commitment has the potential to improve the lives of many people in the central west. At the moment, Lyndon House in Canowindra has secure funding up until June 2016 which enables the current programs to continue as well as the running of the House. There will then be a review by the Government of all funding in this sector. Drug and alcohol misuse costs the Australian community over 50 billion dollars annually in healthcare, lost productivity and family breakdown. This funding means we can continue to offer drug and alcohol treatment works which can help reduce those costs by helping people control or stop using problem substances.

Canowindra Sport afternoon in a match against the Canowindra Pythons. Following a minute’s silence at the start of the game for the 3 young people the town has lost, Chris Noble, Dylan Collier and Stephanie Scott, both teams came out in pouring rain to give the gathered crowd a good show. Charlie Balcombe successfully rounded up enough of the old Cudal Cobras’ team to ensure an entertaining and competitive game. Wet weather and muddy conditions provided an interesting challenge for players, and the final score was a draw, 7-all.

Women’s Bowls In another great round of competition, the winner of the District Singles was Ruth Quinn from Forbes, who defeated Cowra’s Leila Burns 25-19, taking out the tournament for a second year in a row. Unfortunately the wet weather cancelled the games on 21st April. The District Pairs competition will be held at Parkes Railway Diggers’ Bowling club from 27th to 29th April. Men’s Bowls Saturday saw the exciting final of the major singles competition between Chris Millburn and Teddy Lawrence. After 13 ends the score was locked 10 all, but Chris soon gained the upper hand and took the win 32-18. On Sunday, both pennant teams played at home. The 5’s team defeated Eugowra 76-40, and the 7’s team defeated Woodstock with a nerve racking 1 point win. The final score was 61-60. Next week the 5’s will be playing in Cowra, and the 7’s will be playing at home. Organisers wish to thank the ladies who supplied lunch, and Ronnie who donated raffle prizes. Squash News If you are looking for a cheap and effective way to warm up, think squash – it really gets the blood pumping, the legs running and the heart thumping. And it’s so much fun! The autumn season starts Monday 20th April for the ladies competition, and Thursday 23rd April for the mixed competition. If you would like to get involved in the local squash tournament this year, phone Wendy on 6364 3290, or Jonno on 6344 1648. Balloon Competition Roundup After a great start to the 2015 Canowindra International hot air balloon competition, wet weather and windy conditions sabotaged the
final tasks. There were no more flights after Friday afternoon and the competition was forced to end early. It was a close competition, with Australian World Champion Nicola Scaife taking first place, French pilot Clément Seigeot taking second place, and Sean Kavanagh placing third. Congratulations to the winners, and all the balloonists who worked so hard to make this year’s iconic ballooning competition happen, despite the terrible weather conditions.
Rugby League All three grades played in Burrangong last Sunday, for the second round of the Woodbridge Cup. The Canowindra Tigers league tag team beat the Burrangong Bears with an astounding score of 58-0. Unfortunately the youth league was defeated in their match against the Binalong Brahams. The final score was 26-10. This weekend, first grade take on the Gooloogong Cowboys on Friday night under the lights, from 7:30pm at Tom Clyburn Oval, while the youth league are playing in Eugowra. The league tag have a bye.
