We Turned Them All Into Stars! The Canowindra Bowling Club came alive over the Mother’s Day weekend in a spectacular stage show performed by Tommy Jeffs’ Talulah and the men and women of the Club, raising around $5000 to keep the Club going. “I hope you all wore your incontinence pads today,” Tommy said to the audience as he opened the show on Sunday, setting the pace for an outrageous and side-splitting performance. Roars of laughter and cheers erupted from the crowd during every act and joke. Giggling performers danced and lip-synced amid glitter, sequins, flashing lights and the colour purple. People of all ages came to see the show, and even though some of the performers felt a little out of their comfort zones, their friends and family members in the audience

were beaming with pride. Over 250 people attended the two benefit shows packed with music classics – rock n roll, boogie woogie, and pop anthems from the greats like Shirley Bassey, Doris Day and Marilyn Monroe. A toothless “Priscilla” kissed bald heads and “Lulu” brought the house down with the Isley Brothers’ hit “Shout”. A special mention goes to “The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence” for their performance of the Sister Act classic “I Will Follow Him”. Saturday night’s show was catered for by Tommy himself, with Sunday’s afternoon tea prepared by the ladies of the Bowling Club, including a selection of homemade cakes that were so good, guests were wrapping them up in serviettes to take them home. Dear Editor The “Thumbs Down” in the Phoenix always amuse me. More often than not they run down people who live in a quandary as to how they can solve their own problems. Under attack now are the people who enjoy exercising with their animals (dogs in particular) who also need exercising. Now, I don’t know about you but I would find exercising in my own backyard every day a little boring and so do dogs. You ought to watch them delighting in letting off steam when they’re off the lead, running as far and as fast as the fencing will let them, away from their owners and back again over and over. I do understand the objections to poo being left around for others to tread on but most responsible owners I know use a scoop and bags to dispose of it. I also understand that it is very inconvenient to have dogs off the lead at a public event. There are many places for children to play but, guess what? In Canowindra there is no fenced place other than the sports oval to run a dog. A beach
would be great, but we haven’t got one of them either. I know someone who has used the cemetery but that is not secure and the dog was lost for a disturbing length of time. Where would the complainants suggest dogs be exercised? Is there a dog park in the planning? You can’t just put up signs because it suits a particular group of people with no regard for others and no consultation. I wish people would stop and think of someone other than themselves before they “thumbs down” others. It is a community after all and a small one at that. Sharing is a concept that comes to mind (of time and place) that I would like discussed. Isabella McGuire

We Turned Them All Into Stars!
IMAGE: A lot of changes happening at the Canowindra Showground this year
New Sheep Pavilion At Showground Work has begun on the new Sheep Pavilion at the Canowindra Showground after the old one was pulled down recently. The Show Society has raised a whopping total of $102,000 for the new pavilion. The project was initiated 2 years ago, and the campaign started with representatives calling farmers and asking for input and donations. The Showground Trust then applied for two grants; the first a $70,000 grant from the State Government, and then a $15,000 grant from the Cabonne Council. The grants are given to projects that will improve their communities. The Show Society will be adding to this amount as necessary. Showground Society President and Trust Committee member Sam Stranger is happy that the government is finally spending money on improving facilities in the local area. “It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to get any grants,” Sam said, “and while the grants are there, we will try and get them.”
Portable pens and panels make the new pavilion a diverse space. It can be used for the animal nursery, prime lambs and stud merinos on Show day or as a function and entertainment space at other times of the year. “The new shed will be for the entire community, not just for the Show,” said Sam. It is hoped that the new pavilion will be completed before the 2015 Show and is the “main drive” behind the Show Society this year. Sam took over from Geoffrey Beath as Show Society President this year, and like Geoffrey, has been involved with the committee for over 25 years. “The Show is well supported by the community,” said Sam, “and we want to keep that moving along.” The Show Society wants to support the local community as best they can and is predominantly a volunteer based organisation. “We rely on the community to participate,” Sam said. By Rosi Broom
Continued from page 1 “I came in for a quiet drink on a Sunday afternoon, and this is what I got roped into!” said Craig “Carpo” Carpenter before his performance in the show on Saturday night. The whole town stood to benefit from the fundraiser. People visited from Bathurst, Orange, Molong, Dubbo and Forbes, booking out accommodation and supporting local businesses on a weekend when normally not many people would be around town. “I want to say a huge thank you to the Canowindra Phoenix for supporting and promoting this event. Also to the performers who all walked out of there proud and strong. It was uplifting for their spirits. I took them out of their comfort zone, gave them a challenge, and they met it!” “It was just fantastic,” said Tommy, “it really brought everyone together. I love that they got up there and believed in themselves. It gave them a whole new lease on life.” By Rosi Broom

Expression of Thanks Colin James Wilson
I wish to thank everyone for their kind sympathy and condolences, and to reassure those who were distressed by the mis-reporting of the nature of Colin's death. Colin was not on life support and was not switched off. When we arrived Colin was out of surgery and dying, despite the efforts of the trauma, neurological and surgical teams at Liverpool Hospital, who assured us they had done everything possible, but were unable to revive him. Colin valued his friends and colleagues deeply and I know he would have sent them a joke about "dying in the saddle with his cleats on" if he could have. Our family's comfort is in the fact that he was enjoying his life to the full when his death occurred. Again my sincerest thanks to everyone who has offered us such kindness and support. Rhonda.

A Sad Loss For Cudal At about 7pm last Tuesday night, The Royal Hotel Cudal was engulfed by flames, and although nobody was physically injured in the fire, it was still a heavy loss for Cudal. 100 years of the town’s history were destroyed by the fire, as helpless Cudal residents looked on, including Cudal’s sporting memorabilia and photos. The The Royal Hotel, built in 1914, was a historic building; one of the first built in the town. Locals say the pub would have been used by those farmers travelling the stock route. The fire was quite devastating for the bar

staff, patrons and small community of only 400, who lost the only pub in town. It was a place for locals to congregate, celebrate and socialise. It was a place where visitors could meet characters from the community. The quick response to the fire from Cudal Rural Fire Service was commendable, and fortunately none of the neighbouring buildings were damaged. The fire is believed to have originated in the hotel kitchen before gutting the interior and collapsing the roof. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.

A Japanese Twist On This Year’s Vintage

Rugby League Last weekend the Canowindra Tigers travelled to Condobolin. The Tigers failed to move off the line and looked flat in defence, which gave the Condobolin forwards an advantage. Sam O’Malveney was injured in the first minutes of the game, shuffling players from their regular positions. He is out with a broken arm. The Tigers scored first with good ball movement and a conversion from Matt McLean, but Condobolin scored two quick tries for the lead. The Tigers hit back to level the scores until Condobolin bounced back again. They struggled to gain a good position on the field against Condobolin, who are always hard to beat on their home ground. Condobolin took the victory with a score of 36-22, a disappointing loss for the Tigers. Player’s Player went to Jayden Brown. Next week, the Tigers will play at home against Trundle, while the Youth League will have another bye. Men’s Golf Sunday May 10th saw the 4BBB vs Stableford, sponsored by Graham and Debbie Rice. The winners of the round were Chris Weaver and Eddy Roberts with 49 Stableford points on a count back from Corey Knight and Bill Flannery. Next week’s event is an 18 hole Stableford sponsored by Paul Jeffress. League Tag On the weekend, the Canowindra League Tag girls travelled to Condobolin. The team had great defence against the Condobolin team, with Jan Holmes, Tanika Wensley and Ashley McLean making some beautiful chase downs to save tries. The girls showed great skill in spreading the ball, with their first try early in the second half. Alicia scored the second try by throwing 3 dummies and running through the line, but it wasn’t enough for the team, a disappointing loss of 40-8.
Player’s Player went to Ashley McLean and Tanika Wensley. The Ladies’ League Tag will play next weekend at 12:50pm at home in Canowindra. Rugby Union Last weekend the Pythons travelled to Grenfell to play round two of the competition. At half time the score was 10-7 going Grenfell’s way with Daniel Williams scoring, Ben Schaefer converting as well as kicking the penalty goal. The second half saw some controversial reffing that left the boys fighting until the end. After some guidance from Dan Bowd and Adam Nash the boys were soon back in the game. The Pythons experience and force outshone Grenfell’s young boys as they turned scrums a 90-degree angle to gain possession of the ball. Jack Knight soon broke out of the scrum and scored to lead the scoreboard 12-10. It wasn’t long before the Schaefer boys, Ben and Dean, made it over the line to make a good lead of 24-10. Sean Wyburn, Adam Nash and Jack Knight were strong in defence keeping Grenfell out. 3 points and Player’s player went to Ben Schaefer, 2 points to Ben Easter and 1 point to Jack Knight and Adam Grant. By Taneil Thornberry Women’s Bowls The latest Major Singles Final saw Heather Hoad defeat Margaret Gosper 25-12. In the first round of the Minor Singles, Marion Wilson defeated Jenny Middleton 25-20. In the second round of the Minor Pairs, Karen Cox & Linda Miller defeated Bobbie Turner & Betty Jenkins 15-12. Jean Roth, Shirley Robson & Dianne Mooney won the social triples game with a score of 16-10, while Diane Slattery & Moyna Rue won the pairs game 17-12. The Triples Carnival will be held this weekend.
Windowrie Winery, a leading organic winegrower in the region, have recently wrapped up their 2015 vintage. They have had a frosty, but favourable growing season, and the outlook for vintage is positive. “Our yields were somewhat lower than average due to the frost in 2014,” Windowrie’s viniculturist, Jason O’Dea said, “however this helped increase the quality of the fruit, especially in the shiraz and chardonnay vineyards.” The harvest began on Australia Day, and was finished by Easter. There was a lot of focus on preserving flavours and complementary techniques, with the aim of “creating a sense of place from the vineyard and region”. The team behind Windowrie invited Japanese winemaker Shige Kimura, who has been an industry professional for over two decades. Kimura’s role in the team was to challenge the group to “re-think and re-evaluate” every one of Windowrie’s harvesting and winemaking processes. The special visit from Kimura was a valuable experience for the team. “Having Shige with us for vintage was fantastic,” said Windowrie winemaker Anthony D’Onise. “He gave us a new perspective on our winemaking, as well as a better understanding of the Japanese market and palate.” Windowrie’s relationship with Japan stretches back over a decade of export and looks to only get stronger; “we’re lucky to have had him in the region and will be working closely with him in the future,” Anthony said.
Telstra Let Us Down Once Again! Last Thursday, 7th May Telstra once again went ahead and carried out a planned upgrade on the mobile base station that provides mobile coverage to Canowindra between 11 pm on Wednesday and 4.30 am on Thursday morning. However, as all residents and businesses know, we were without mobile connections until around 2 pm in the afternoon, a further 10 hours in addition to what was proposed. Telstra did not advise anybody in Canowindra that this was to take place. They did confirm that they had let John Cobb’s office know, however this information was not passed on at a local level. Telstra spokesperson, Doug MacDougall has apologised for any interruptions to customer services throughout this period and has acknowledged that there should have been better communication to Canowindra residents prior to these recent upgrades. Surely Telstra, if you are in the business of communications, you can let a small community know when there is only going to be SOS services available on mobiles?
