NEW CAR NEW RATE MATE!! On any new car

Is Cabonne Council Fit for The Future? Cabonne Council will meet on 26th May to decide on their recommendation to IPART on whether Cabonne and Orange Councils should merge. Even if Council supports and recommends a NO MERGE for the Councils, ultimately the decision is made by the State Government, and not the local Council. Mayor of Cabonne, Michael Hayes said at the meeting in Canowindra on Thursday 14th, “Council wants to stand alone and not merge, however the Council’s hands will be tied even if the Council recommends a no merge.” The independent consultant, Stephen Bunting, went through the details on what constitutes a Fit for the Future Council. That Council needs to pass 7 tests on finance and sustainability and 10 tests on capacity. Cabonne meets all of the tests on finance, sustainability and capacity, with the exception of one, which is: Are assets in an acceptable condition? And this will be achieved in 2016. There are no financial benefits for Cabonne to merge – there is a supposed saving of $5.4M over 10 years, however when

the State Government grant of $5M is taken away the savings are minimal. There will obviously be redundancies at Cabonne and representatives for both Councils will be halved, with one Councillor representing 4,466 people rather than the current number of 1,123 people under the present guidelines set up with Cabonne. Andrew Gee, NSW State Member for Orange said, “I do not support a forced union between Orange and Cabonne”. John Cobb, Federal Member for Calare said, “I have been told at the top that if a council has a case for standing alone then that is their option”. That however does not appear to be the case here, as it is not Council’s decision. As ratepayers, we must lobby the State Member to ensure that the right decision is made. Crs Durkin and Walker need to ensure that they represent the views of everybody expressed at the local meeting and vote to support a no merge motion. By Cheryl Newsom

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

The more dense vegetation continuously present in any region, the more water is also present in that region. Climate is completely dependent on green and growing vegetation. There is water present all around us in plants, animals and soil, in-ground water as well as water vapour in the passing air (atmosphere). It is important to realise that Engineering Science and Agricultural Science applied to the land are not science, nor are they related to nature in any way. As industrial processes these ‘sciences’ are only increasing the deserts of all countries where industrial methods of land use are practiced, as in Australia, in our day. The definition of Science is: “The study and understanding of repeatable natural phenomena”. If human thinking does not fit this simple and rigorous definition it is not science and may just be human opinion.

Just looking at the Letter to the Editor. I can understand people wanting to use the oval to walk their dogs. I live across the road from it and I would love to. (Although my dog is too big and stupid to be off a lead). But in truth you are not allowed to have dogs on sporting fields. The sports complex is great now that it is fenced, has the fitness path, and skateboard park. But it is still fundamentally a sporting field and as such any animal is not allowed. Mark Brown

QUESTION of the week

IMAGE: The quilt handmade and donated by Fiona Ferguson for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

Canowindra High School P&C Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday May 26th in the school staff room at 5pm. All are welcome to go and support the school. Correction - new sheep pavilions. Apologies. The Show Society raised $15,000, and the remainder of the funds have been sourced by the Canowindra Showground & Racecourse Trust, making a total of $102,000. A beautiful quilt will be raffled as part of Canowindra’s Biggest Morning Tea on the 28th May. The quilt was handmade by Fiona Ferguson to raise funds for breast cancer and is currently hanging in the window of The Plague and I on Gaskill Street. All money raised will be donated to cancer research along with the money raised by Canowindra’s Biggest Morning Tea. Raffle tickets are $2 each and can be purchased at The Plague and I and the Canowindra Community Health Centre. The raffle draw will take place at Canowindra’s Biggest Morning Tea at Billy Paul’s Carpet Shop on Gaskill Street between 10am and 12pm. Cudal Rugby Club will be holding a Tribute Day for Ben Mitchell at Dean Park on Saturday 27th June. Everyone is invited to be there for a wonderful day of rugby, good food, a full bar and to show their support for the community.

If the weather allows, a jumping castle will be there for the kids. Gates will open at 11am. Stepping On – a free strength and balance training program for seniors is coming to Canowindra Community Health Centre. The program is informative and fun, presented by trained health professionals to advise people on ways to build confidence and stop falls. The program starts on 3rd June from 2pm4pm and will continue every Thursday for 7 weeks. Numbers are strictly limited and bookings are essential. Phone Ann Jones or Raelene Warn on 6340 3300. Congratulations to St Edwards School’s Verse Speaking Choirs who did very well in the Cowra Eisteddfod this week. The Stage 1 group took first place, the Stage 2 group took first place and the Stage 3 group were runners up and highly commended. Residents are urged to remain vigilant with scammers targeting the district of Calare. MP John Cobb said recently his office has received complaints from the community claiming they have been contacted by people illegally trying to obtain credit card and bank details, posing as Government representatives. The Australian Red Cross Donor Mobile came to Canowindra this week with nearly every space available to donate booked out. If you missed the chance to donate your blood, don’t despair! The Donor Mobile will be in Cowra between the 22nd-25th of June, and returning to Canowindra again August 18th. Call 13 14 95 to book your place.

Do you think Cabonne Council and Orange Council should merge?

Graham Rice: “No, I think small villages are better looked after as they are. Orange is so big and we might slip through the cracks. There is no benefit to us.”

Anthony Durkin: “Legally I cannot comment until the 26th, but I’ve heeded all of the comments and viewpoints of all ratepayers who attended both the meetings in Molong and Canowindra”

Chris Gregory: “No, I believe we’d miss out on quality service which is hard enough to get on the tip of the border as it is. It’d only make things worse.”

Philip Shaw’s New Cellar Door What a find in Orange! Located on Shiralee Road, which runs off Woodward Road, Philip Shaw is developing a fantastic new Cellar Door. Nomads Flock To Canowindra Canowindra was buzzing on Saturday, with the Recreational Vehicles Fellowship of Rotarians of Victoria (RVFRV) visiting the town as part of the “Cowra ‘Breakaway’ Muster”. The group of 60 recreational vehicle enthusiasts assembled at the Age of Fishes Museum before spending a day admiring our beautiful district. Cafes, shops and various points of interest around town were bustling with activ-

ity. The group started their morning with a detailed and informative presentation by Bruce Loomes at the Age of Fishes Museum, followed by a tour of the Museum. The group then wandered down Gaskill Street to browse and enjoy lunch at any of our local dining venues. The RVFRV is made up of Rotarian groups and their partners from all over Victoria, including people from Geelong, Gippsland,

Thursday 21 May 2015 Page 5 Hall’s Gap and Ballarat. There is in excess of 100 people taking part in the organisation and 60 people joined this muster. “We have about three musters per year,” said John Artz, the group’s President, “we travel to different parts of Victoria and over the border to a point.” “It’s great,” John said, “if you can come back to a town more than once you will see something you’ve never seen before. You leave behind a few dollars in every town you go to.” The Age of Fishes Museum actively campaigns to bring visitors to the town in order to help boost tourism and increase business across the town. The Museum sent out 500 letters in December to schools, caravan and car clubs to name a few, inviting them to come to the area and experience what the town has to offer. The groups who accept the invitation are provided with an itinerary detailing all the local shops, what is available, places to go and things to do. “It’s good for the whole district when these kinds of groups visit,” a representative from Age of Fishes Museum said. ITP Cowra-Federal Budget 2015 Wrap-Up Small business is a sector that came out a clear winner from the 2015-16 federal budget. Despite mutterings that the budget was going to be “dull and boring”, there were nevertheless a few surprises contained in the pages of the budget papers. The budget contained a proposal for a socalled “Netflix tax” (that is, extending the GST to digital products and services imported by consumers in Australia). However, another rumoured GST change, to decrease the GST exemption threshold of $1,000 that applies to purchases of imported goods, did not make an appearance. The government plans to implement an anti-avoidance rule specifically directed towards very large multinationals. Other antiavoidance announcements aimed at the same taxpayers illustrate intentions to “combat multinational tax avoidance”. There were few other notable budget impacts for personal taxation. The budget announcement which will have the most significant impact on middle Australia is the child care reform package.

Winter is well and truly upon us, and after a pleasantly warm autumn, families and homes in the region could be vulnerable to bill shock. The energy costs of Australian households are some of the highest in the developed world and each year many Australians struggle to pay their gas and electricity bills. In the past six years the combined cost of gas and electricity has risen by as much as 85 per cent in some states and market research proposes that 50 per cent of Australians worry about whether or not they will be able to pay for these important and essential services. Don’t panic; it is possible to take control of your energy costs this winter. Here are Essential Energy’s tips on how: Get ahead on the bills: Most energy companies offer discounts for paying bills on time and for paying with direct debit. When you can afford it, make sure to pay your bills before the due date and depending on your provider, you could receive a 30 per cent discount! Patience is a virtue: Your house won’t heat up any faster if you crank up the temperature. Set your heater to a normal temperature and give it time to heat up the room. It doesn’t matter how you set the thermostat, the heater will take the same amount of time to reach 20 degrees. When you set it too high, you actually waste energy. Turn down the heat: Do you have the heating on a few degrees higher than is really necessary? Keeping the temperature between 18-20 degrees can save you a lot of money throughout the entire year and more

often than not you won’t even notice the difference. Power down appliances: Turn off appliances you aren’t using at the wall, keeping the plugs turned off and only turning them on when you need to use them. Research shows average households pay nearly $100 a year in standby costs. Don’t overwork your kettle: Only put into your kettle as much water as you are going to use. It costs more to boil a full kettle than 2 cups of water. Now’s the time to plant! If you want a great way to save time, energy and money on the right plant choices, why not get professional advice? Traditionally autumn is the ideal season to install plants as air temperatures are cooler and soil temperatures are still warm enough to activate good root growth. Sally Bourne Landscapes offer services like on site garden consultation, practical garden layout, suitable soil preparation and installation of landscape works. Sally can help you create a garden that adds value to your home, enhances your lifestyle and saves money in the long term. Her well-designed gardens can reduce the cost of electricity by cooling the home in summer and insulating it in winter. Sally can help reduce the cost of your food bill with directions on how to successfully plant and grow veggies and fruit trees. Depending on the site, Sally’s advice is to plant suitable trees around a home to provide summer shade, winter solar access and wind protection. Sally can help you design a garden that meets your family’s needs, and is individual and achievable.

My House My Home Getting intentional about being eco-friendly around the home is a great way to reduce the cost of consumption and reduce your impact on the earth. There are ways you can do this without really impacting on your day-to-day life, but the difference it will make towards the planet and people around you is extremely valuable! There are plenty of simple things you can do around the home that will reduce your carbon footprint. Here are some of our suggestions: Use simple household cleaners like vinegar and baking soda instead of cleaners that are high in chemicals. This will reduce air pollution inside your home and outdoors. It will also minimise exposure to asthma or allergy triggers as well as chemicals that can harm your family’s health. Some store-bought cleaners are plant based and quite harmless

too. Look for brands that have a complete list of ingredients on the label. Keep plastic out of the microwave and always reheat your food in glass containers. Heating plastic in the microwave can cause chemicals in the plastic to leach into the food. “Microwave safe” plastics can withstand a higher heat before warping, but are not necessarily safer for you. Don’t dump your useful goods like clothes, kitchen items and toys; send them to charity or an op-shop instead. Australians generate around 48 million tonnes of waste per year of which only half is recycled! Excessive landfill is dangerous because a lot of the waste turns toxic, leaking toxins into our soil and groundwater. When renovating, extending or building a new home, don’t miss the opportunity to

make it use less energy. Green Homes Australia in Orange is locally owned and operated, specialising in ways to make your home more energy efficient. Green Homes Australia use practical and realistic construction and design using everyday materials; no expensive building methods, technology or ‘green materials’ required. Mick from Green Homes Australia has been building across the region for nearly 20 years and was involved in the local Ronald McDonald House project, implementing green building know-how throughout the process. “Green Homes Australia is about taking standard materials and building everyday homes that are designed to be exceedingly energy efficient, without having to rely on expensive add-ons.” By Rosi Broom

My House My Home Popular programs like The Block and House Rules bit the nation with the renovation bug and taught us that we can boost the value and aesthetic appeal of our homes with decorations, renovations and all round general improvements. Renovations that are wellplanned can even give your lifestyle a much needed overhaul. Industry professionals suggest taking careful consideration of the financial cost of your renovation projects and focus on making improvements that will appeal to a broad market. Keep in mind that high quality kitchen and bathroom renovations can add a lot of value to your property so spend the money where it matters. Eco-friendly renovations that include “green features” like rainwater tanks, energy-efficient appliances and drip-feed irrigation systems are becoming more popular because they add value to the home as well as helping you save on the cost of bills. There are plenty of businesses across the Central West that offer advice and products to suit any renovator’s needs.

For all things soft furnishing, be it the most fabulous curtains available anywhere or matching lamp shade and cushions, ASISI Interiors and Design can do it. $1.1 Million financial assistance for Cabonne

Your free weekly guide to what’s happening in and around Canowindra...shop locally first!

WHAT’S On

Cabonne Council has received $1.1 million in funding from the Australian Commonwealth Government, under a total of $8.7 million that was granted to Calare. The Australian Government has provided over $46 billion to local governments under the annual Financial Assistance Grant program since 1975. The scheme helps local governments deliver on facilities, services and infrastructure priorities and keep small towns and villages alive. There are two components of the grant: the first is a general purpose component distributed between states and territories according to population. The second is an identified local road component distributed between states and territories according to fixed historical shares. The funding is untied allowing Councils to spend grants on local priorities. “Local governments play a pivotal role in bringing communities together and producing local solutions to local problems,” Federal MP John Cobb said. Cabonne Mayor Michael Hayes also welcomed the announcement of this year’s grant for Cabonne, saying “it is a vital income component that enables Council to implement services throughout the Shire.”

The Hyundai Santa Fe has taken out a number of motoring.com.au large SUV comparisons based on its dynamic ability, practicality, strong aftersales program and its premium look and feel. Although the 2015 year model Santa Fe is a mild update, with a subtle new look and a handful of features, it conspires to maintain the vehicle’s lofty trajectory. The new Santa Fe is priced from $39,990 Drive Away. The 2015 Santa Fe continues the vehicle’s family friendly approach, from the smaller touches like the abundance of incidental storage cubbies, intuitive controls, seven-seat capability and decent cargo space, while honing the driving experience with suspension tweaks and adding a few extra features to sweeten the deal.

Although Tommy is not a part of the Bowling Club, he is passionate about Canowindra and the people who live here. “I just saw a need for it,” Tommy says of the fundraiser, “It’s a great little club and they’re so supportive of me.” “A big pat on the back to Tommy, without him none of this would’ve been possible,” said Kevin Walker of the Bowling Club. The proceeds will go towards improvements at the Bowling Club to make it more

Junior Rugby Union

Canowindra Pythons are lucky to have three teams this year with the Under 7’s, Under 9’s and Under 11’s and all teams turned up ready to play their hearts out. The Under 7’s had three games on the day and stand out players include Noah Hamer, Nate Stanbury and Cooper Breen. Our Under 9 team showed that they are a force to be reckoned with in their first game and most of the new team members have taken to tackling and scrums like naturals. Outstanding players for the day include Jonty Thurgate, Harry Hazelton and Oscar Cleary. In the Under 11’s team Hughie Breen, Tom Mitchell and Andy Townsend were all try scorers. By Ann Maree Rice

Rugby Ladies Day a Success

The Canowindra Pythons Rugby ladies day was a great success with many turning out for the event on Saturday. The fantastic weather accompanied with delicious food made for an enjoyable day and fun was had by all. Thanks to Marg and Rob for organising the event and to those who helped out with the food. Unfortunately, the Pythons didn’t come away with a win, going down to Condobolin 32-19. With 3 backs and both hookers missing the Pythons definitely weren’t on their game. Players’ Player went to Ben Easter. Next week the Pythons will travel to Blayney to take on the Rams. By Taneil Thornberry

Rugby League

The Canowindra first grade had a tough game on Sunday against Trundle. It was a very close match with both sides wanting the two points. The Tigers came away with the win, 26 points to 18.

League Tag

The Canowindra Tigresses faced off against Trundle and came away with a 34-0 win. The team were strong in attack and defence, with good movement of the ball. Jen Holmes made some great runs, and there were many good hard runs up the middle from the team. Kristy White kicked 3 conversions and Mel Rue kicked 2. Player’s Player went to Molly Grant. Next Saturday the team will head to Binalong to take on the Binalong Brahmans. Kick off will be at 12:30pm.

Ladies Golf

The 2 person Ambrose event was held on May 6th with partners being drawn from a hat. This method saw the great combination of Roslyn Partridge & Helen Constable take out the day with a 71.25 Nett. The stroke event was held on May 13th. Margie Sharpe won the event with a 75 Nett. Seven ladies took the time to travel to Mudgee for the Western District Tournament. The winner of the Division 1 36 hole Handicap Event was Annette Thomas, with Helen Constable taking out Tuesday’s 3rd division 18 hole competition. Round 1 of Championships started on
