Strangerland Premieres To VIP Guests At Orange Around 120 people from Canowindra and Cabonne attended the VIP Premiere of Strangerland for the Central West at Odeon 5 Cinema in Orange on Tuesday night. Naomi Wenck, Producer, Dragonfly Pictures officially welcomed everyone and made particular mention of thanks to all of the people and businesses of Canowindra for their fantastic support during the filming process. Comments at the end of the movie described Strangerland as, “ confronting, extraordinary, deep, fantastic, different and “one of the best films Nicole Kidman has acted in.” “She went outside of herself,” said Naomi Wenck. “It was a true performance, one of her best. She really owned it. I knew that when I cast her in this role, she would deliver a fantastic performance.” The setting for the fictional town ‘Nathgari’ was in and around Canowindra, and the other filming based around Broken Hill. The incredible cinematography wowed the audience.
Many local businesses were recognisable, particularly John Lawrence’s IGA, Vicki Grant’s Pharmacy, Belubula Butchery and the Royal Hotel. Dot Cain, a Canowindra local with an Extras role was instantly recognisable on the big screen, with a green top, red hair and a cigarette. Everyone cheered for Dot’s moment, with many “oohs” and “aahs” during Canowindra’s highly anticipated street scenes. Afterwards everybody was invited to the Canobolas Hotel where wood fired pizzas and drinks were served, courtesy of Dragonfly Pictures. Strangerland is a mystery-thriller-drama telling the story of how a couple descends into despair and anger when their two teenagers go missing in the outback, ultimately unravelling the family’s uncomfortable past. Make sure you get into Orange to see it if you missed out on Tuesday. By Rosi Broom

Dear Editor, I am writing to let parents know that the new beyondblue campaign aimed at teenagers is called ‘Brains can have a mind of their own’, and the message is that brains are weird. They can keep you awake at night, stop you going out, make it hard for you to concentrate and keep you on edge. It’s a sad fact that despite the efforts of many organisations like beyondblue, Headspace and Batyr, young people continue to take their lives. In fact, latest figures show that 350 young people aged 15 to 24 died by suicide in in 2013. That is 350 too many. That means 350 devastated families, and countless bereaved friends and acquaintances. We have specific information for parents about how to recognise signs of depression and anxiety, and how to talk to their teenagers about issues bothering them. For people who are concerned about the mental health of their teenage children, please have a look at the beyondblue website www.beyondblue.

Daroo Awards - Calling for Nominations! Last year for the 2014 Cabonne Daroo Business Awards there were only 5 local Canowindra businesses that made it into the finals. These were Deli Lama, Cargo Store, Eddies of Canowindra, the Age of Fishes Museum and Canowindra Community Players. Let’s see if Canowindra can have a greater result this year. We encourage everybody to select and nominate a business that is, in your idea, the best new business, ongoing business and home-based business; businesses with excellence in hospitality, sustainable agriculture, accommodation, tourism, and marketing, advertising and communications. You can also nominate a business or community group for their contribution to Cabonne, employee of the year and the best business in Cabonne. We are sure that there are many award winning businesses in and around Canowindra, who we, as the local people should nominate so that they can also be one of the finalists this year. Nomination forms are available at the Canowindra Post Office, Graham Rice’s Newsagency and the Age of Fishes Museum. The aim of the Daroo Business Awards is to recognise the contributions and achievements made by Cabonne businesses and their employees and raise the profile of those businesses. The major prize is a $3000 television advertising package. There are only a few weeks left to get your nominations in for your favourite Canowindra business as entries close on Saturday June 27th. Just by nominating, you could go into the draw to win $200 which you can spend at any business in the Cabonne region. So come on Canowindra, let’s get behind the businesses and see if we can come up with some winners. By Rosi Broom

Dr. O’Ryan said “as I approach the next stage of my life, I need to think of what is next, although I have no plans to leave Canowindra. Western Area Soccer Knockout
Canowindra High School played against Cowra High School in the grand final of the Western Area Soccer Knockout Competition on Tuesday. Within the first 15 minutes, Canowindra missed a penalty shot from in front of the goal box, but kicked a goal later in the game to win. The final score was 1-0. Rod Jones, the team coach said “it could’ve
gone either way and it was pretty close, but our team-work got us home.” Rod has been coaching the team for 6 years and says they have never been past round 3, but now the team improves with every training session, and gets better with every game. “It’s fair to say our backs were amazing and our goal keeper of course, but it was a great game by all girls.”
The District Triples Final was played at Cowra on Wednesday June 3rd. Congratulations to the Canowindra team Nancy Morrow, Margaret Gosper and Heather Hoad who were the Runner-Ups in the tournament. The Cowra team defeated the Canowindra team, making Jo Davies, Margaret Tremble and Nada Kurta the District Triples Champions for 2015.
