PRINCIPAL’S REPORT On behalf of the staff I welcome all to Cowra High for 2015, with a particularly special welcome to our new students and their families. I am confident you will find your time at Cowra High both exciting and rewarding. I also welcome our new staff for 2015. Mr Mark Campbell ~ Head Teacher Mathematics Mr Peter Newbery ~ TAS teacher Miss Lucy Vaughan ~ Visual Arts teacher Miss Ranran Huang ~ Japanese teacher Mr Matthew Rowles ~ HSIE teacher Mr Scott Levick ~ PDHPE teacher and Mr Brent Harris will be sharing the Counsellor’s role with Mrs Gail Farley These teachers represent a mixture of high levels of experience and new career teachers full of extra energy. Mr Anthony Hamer will act as Head Teacher HSIE until the position is filled permanently. We also welcome back Mr Ken Muhling, Science and Ms Celia Klinger, Careers, who have both returned after 12 months leave. As you would be aware, the first day of the year was a School Development Day ~ this was an opportunity for staff to undertake professional learning. Staff worked on our annual Child Protection training, sport coaching skills and making modifications to teaching approaches to meet the needs of some of our new Year 7 students. This was a very productive and worthwhile day in our preparation for the new year. The term is already in full swing, particular for our senior students. Last Monday & Tuesday saw students travel to the University of Wollongong to experience what this institution has to offer. We also have the majority of Year 11 at the Crossroads camp from Wednesday until today. This year we returned to Burrendong Sport & Recreation Camp where students will complete the mandatory Crossroads personal development course. Crossroads
aims to support senior students as they address changing issues related to identity, independence and their growing responsibilities. The annual Swimming Carnival will be conducted Friday 20 February at the Cowra Aquatic Centre. I ask parents/caregivers to encourage their children to come along and get involved on the day ~ of course everyone is most welcome to be attend. Year 7 are settling into high school extremely well, which again reflects the success of Cowra High’s transition program. The experiences the students gained throughout 2014 ensure they gain the very best opportunity to start their high school careers on the right foot. Remember the Year 7 Camp at Wyangala Dam will commence on 25 February. This is an important component of the transition into Cowra High and provides the opportunity to build important relationships within Year 7 & with their Year 11 mentors. Last night we held our first P&C meeting for 2015. It was great to see so many people interested in their children’s education. I encourage you to come along on the first Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm at the Cowra Services club. I look forward to continuing to build on the outstanding success of 2014 throughout 2015. Have a great fortnight. Charles Gauci
Did you know? If your child misses as little as eight days in a school term, by the end of high school they will have missed a year of education.

DISCOVERY DAY/CAREERS ADVISERS DAY UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG 2015 On Monday afternoon, 35 students from Year 12 accompanied by Ms Klinger & Mr Roxburgh left to attend the Discovery Day at UOW. They joined nearly 100 other students to experience a day at university, attending lectures, getting to know their way around the campus and finding out about courses that are available. Comments by some of the students on the excursion were: The best thing about the Discovery Day was understanding the possibilities of degrees and double degrees Speaking to Uni students and listening to their stories helped to make the thought of going to Uni a little more exciting Spending a day in a Uni and seeing what it was like Ms Klinger attended a Careers Advisers Day while the students were at lectures and was updated on the courses and facilities available at the University of Wollongong. This included a tour of the Nursing faculty, Early Start Centre & a talk by Science faculty staff about the importance of studying Maths for the HSC.
WALL OF RENOWN INDUCTEE 2014 A highlight of the school’s annual Presentation Day ceremony held at the end of last year was the induction of ex-student, Adrian Kiely, into the school’s Wall of Renown. Adrian attended Cowra High from 1995 until 2000 when he was School Captain. Adrian became a fighter pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force at the age of 23 and was awarded RAAF Fighter Pilot of the Year in 2010. In 2013 he completed an F/A-18 Fighter Combat Instructor course, where he was awarded Most Proficient Pilot of his course. Adrian has met Queen Elizabeth II twice when invited to Buckingham Palace. Adrian’s talk was accompanied by a PowerPoint of pictures of the planes he flies. His message to the current students was fortune favours the brave and decide what you need to do to be successful and stick at it. A number of students and staff enjoyed talking to Adrian afterwards to learn more about his amazing career.

The winners were: Kate Hodges ~ mini iPad Bianca Riggio ~ $100 visa card Patrick Ryan ~ $100 visa card Naomi Reid ~ $20 iTunes card.

THIS YEAR’S SEIKEI STUDENT Sadly, it is almost time for the very popular 2014 student from our sister school Seikei in Tokyo, Yoshi Kondo, to return home. The good news is that Rie Kamiyasu will arrive just before Easter to begin her year’s stay. Rie comes very highly recommended by her teachers and is a friendly, outgoing person who loves baseball and playing the piano. We are looking for kind families who would be willing to host her for a term ~ we need four host families. It would be great to have her families known and already communicating with her before her arrival. Hosting is a wonderful way of reaching out to another culture, with lasting benefits and friendships formed. During the Christmas holidays, for example, two former exchange students came back to Cowra to stay with their families. One former student from here spent five weeks back in Japan and one family who only hosted for two weeks went over for a return visit. Host families receive the support of a very experienced exchange student organisation, which is in its 45th year and a small amount of money weekly to assist with expenses. The school and Seikei Committee cover expenses such as uniforms, books and excursions. Rie will live as part of the family, subject to your rules as your own children are. Rie speaks good English, and by the time for her second family communication and understanding of our customs should be no problem. If your child is studying Japanese, what a help Rie would be with homework! If you are interested, or would like further information, please let us know as soon as possible by phoning the school on 6342 1766. Cliff Dykes will be returning next Monday 9 February to photograph students who missed out this week.
WESTERN SCHOOL SPORT REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS 2015 Included in this newsletter is a summary of representative trial dates for Western School Sport teams to compete at State Carnivals this year. The most up to date information can always be found on the Western School Sport Website by following the link to trial information. Triallists need to be very talented in their chosen sport. Unless indicated all teams are open age group. Students usually need to express their interest in trialling to Mr Johnstone or their school team coach a couple of weeks before the Divisional or Regional trial date. Feel free to contact Mr Johnstone for more information. COWRA SWIMMERS At the recent NSW State Age Championships held at Homebush, seven Stingrays swimmers competed. Lucy Wilson swam the race of her life in the heats of the 15 years 100m Breaststroke to finish 2nd in a time of 1:19:31 (an Australian Age Qualifying time) and booked a berth in the finals later that evening in 10th position. Lucy swam faster still in the finals to finish in 9th spot in a time of 1:18:86 well under the National qualifying time of 1:20:00. The Georgina Hope Foundation Australian Age Swimming Championships will this year be held in Sydney on 13 - 20 April. Lucy's persistence has paid dividends and allowed her talent to be highlighted on the National stage. Cowra Stingrays State Age swimmers were: Jade Browne ~ 50 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 200 Breaststroke & 4x50 Freestyle relay Georgia Lewis ~ 50 Freestyle, 200 Breaststroke & 4 x 50 Freestyle relay Jade TeWeehi ~ 4 x 50 Freestyle relay Lucy Wilson ~ 100 Breaststroke, 200 Breaststroke All swimmers should be congratulated for their performances in Sydney.
