PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Next week Year 11 will start their midcourse exams. It is important that students attend all their timetabled exams ~ I wish Year 11 the best of luck. Last week students in Years 7 & 9 completed NAPLAN exams. I’ll take this opportunity to congratulate all the students who approached the exams in a positive manner and did their best for all assessments. I also thank the staff who got in early each morning to cook a BBQ breakfast for the students ~ this was a great initiative that gave each student a positive start to the day. Our students’ involvement in the Cowra Eisteddfod kicked off this week with Drama students performing on Tuesday. They had three short dramatic pieces to perform, with our Senior group being awarded first place for their salute to Shakespeare and our other students receiving ‘Highly Commended’ for their performances ~ a great achievement. I now look forward to seeing our Dancers perform. Speaking of dancers ~ the success of our dance groups continue to go from strength to strength. I was informed this week that our Aboriginal and elective dance groups have each been selected to perform in the Schools Spectacular in Term 4. We also have students auditioning for feature roles. I wish each and every one of them the best of luck and look forward to sharing their successes in the near future. Success follows Cowra High students in a broad variety of fields and it was tremendous to be informed our Junior debaters have moved on to the next level after defeating Griffith High teams on Wednesday. Outstanding!

COWRA HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER U/15 BOYS SOCCER

Last Friday, under clear blue skies, our boys took to the field against Red Bend Catholic College Forbes, in the second round of the Bill Turner Cup with anticipation and a very positive vibe. The team played a very even contest for the first 15 minutes. Matthew Dun had one long range shot that just missed and he also raced into open space right in front, but agonisingly lost control of the ball. As the game progressed, the boys grew in confidence, started hitting very accurate passes and spent more & more time, attacking in Red Bend’s defensive half. Bitterly, the opposition got a ball in open space and slotted a goal in. The boys came out firing in the second half and put intense pressure on the Red Bend team within the initial stages, however, the opposition held their nerve. Their use of space & superior passing game finally showed its mettle as our boys tired and lost half a step. An excellent five pass movement led to another goal and a 2-0 score line. Red Bend scored again, deep in the half making it a 3-0 loss for Cowra High School. Overall, the game was played with a great spirit and our Cowra boys displayed fantastic respect to the game and to our opposition. It has been a pleasure managing the team in the Bill Turner Cup this year.

Page 3 FIREBIRD FORENSICS During the first week of the last school holidays, Cowra High dancers, Hope Martin-Edgar & Francesca Fenton, were selected with eight other dancers from across the state to partake in The Arts Unit choreographic workshop Firebird Forensics Project 2016. This culminated in a major performance on Saturday 16 April at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The Arts Unit joined forces with internationally renowned animater and composer Paul Rissmann as well as dancer and performer Josef Brown. Igor Stravinsky’s original Firebird Suite was created for a ballet presented in Paris in 1910. The ballet was based on Russian Folk tales of the magical glowing bird that can be both a blessing and a curse to its owner. This new work was performed by 27 musicians & 10 dancers, specifically selected from NSW public schools ~ what an amazing experience for our students. Hope & Francesca have been members of the NSW State Dance Ensemble for the past four years performing in State Dance Festivals, School Spectacular and Education Week across the State. Being selected to be part of Firebird Forensics definitely demonstrates how hard our rural students work to reach their goals. Congratulations girls on a job well done!

COWRA HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER PLATE TECTONICS

Last term Year 9 were studying plate tectonics. They learnt all about earthquakes & volcanoes, and made some of their own volcanoes using recycled plastic bottles & newspaper. We then added the chemicals needed to produce a model of a volcano erupting.

SWIMMING Lucy Wilson represented CHS at the NSW All Schools Swimming held at Sydney Aquatic Centre, Homebush on Friday 6 May in the Girls 17 & over 100m Breaststroke. Another great achievement by Lucy, who came 5th in the State with a time of 1:18.37.

 CHS KNOCKOUT TENNIS Last Friday Cowra High girls and boys tennis teams played against Orange High at Cowra.  FIRE & RESCUE NSW OPEN DAY

Arrival at school on time is important because:  Your child needs to attend muster so they can be marked present & hear the roll notices.  This ensures your child does not miss out on important learning activities.  It helps students learn the importance of punctuality & routine.  It gives students time to greet their friends before class; and  It allows the students to begin their school work with everyone else in their class therefore decreasing disruption.

Fire & Rescue NSW is hosting its annual Fire Station Open Day tomorrow, Saturday 21 May, between 10am & 2pm. Go along and watch fire safety demonstrations, road crash rescue scenarios, hop aboard a fire truck and learn about becoming a fire fighter.
