BIRD WEEK DRAWING COMPETITION WINNERS Cowra Council and the Natural Resource Management (NRM) Advisory Committee have announced winners in the National Bird Week Drawing Competition.

The Drawing Competition was open to local primary school pupils from Years 3–6 with contestants invited to draw their favourite Australian bird in either black-andwhite, colour, using pencils, pastels, pens or any media of their choice. All drawings are on display at Cowra Shire Council Customer Service Centre with judging this week by members of the NRM Committee with prizes awarded for first, second, and third place for each year group:

Cowra Council will be carrying out sewer rehabilitation work commencing Monday, November 20 over the next month in the vicinity of the following roads: Berowra Street, Binni Creek Road, Bligh Lane, Dowell Street, Kibbler Street, Kite Street, Kooralla Walk, Lee Street, Morilla Street, Neila Street, Newcombe Street, Redfern Street, Sheahan Street, Stewart Street,Taronga Drive,Victor Street and Wahroonga Street. WEED ALERT — hemlock!

Recent Cowra Council weed inspections have revealed a marked increase in the highly-toxic weed, hemlock (conium maclatum). Hemlock (pictured right) grows to between 150–180cm (five to six feet in height) and is now flowering. The plant has reddish purple blotches along the stem and fern-like leaves resembling that of a giant carrot plant to which it is related. It favours river banks and highly-fertile places like stock yards and sheep camps. All parts of the plant are highly-toxic to livestock, particularly horses and cattle. If found, it should be hoed-out, picked-up,

and put in a stack where it cannot be accessed by stock. Land-holders along the Lachlan and Belubula Rivers are urged to check their banks; if spraying, use approved broadleaf herbicides.

Cowra Swimming Club's Annual Qualifying Meet will be held at Cowra Aquatic Centre this Saturday and Sunday. The pool will therefore be closed to the public from 5pm on Saturday, November 18 and will re-open on Sunday November 19 at 7pm.
