NOTICEBOARD “SOFT SCULPTURE” AT GALLERY

RAFCA 2017 STARTING NOW!

The exciting touring exhibition Soft Core opens at the Cowra Regional Art Gallery tomorrow, Saturday, August 26. Guest speaker at the event is exhibition curator Michael Do who will present a floor talk from 2.15pm prior to the opening. The exhibition continues until Sunday, October 8.

The unique Recycled Art for Cowra Awards (RAFCA) recently kicked-off with this year’s competition having the intriguing theme of “Showtime”, Cowra Tidy Towns Chair, Councillor Judi Smith said.

This “must-see” exhibition presents a diverse range of artistic practices that explore the many facets of ‘softness’. There are not only works that utilise tactile materials, co-opted for their versatility and their mutability between function and emotion, but also, works that require activation — such as electricity or inflation to become whole while others inhabit their softness quietly. Gallery hours this weekend are Saturday and Sunday, 2–4pm. Normal hours resume next week. Admission to the exhibition is free. “It’s a very broad category which we hope will enthuse young people as much as last year’s ‘Song Titles’. Think show in any sense of the word: circuses, movies, TV shows, musicals, plays... and entrants can represent the titles of the show, a character they like, even a scene. “There are lots of other types of shows — fashion, puppet, flower. And of course agricultural shows like the Cowra show or some of our vibrant village shows. They can let their imaginations run wild!” Cr Smith said. Judging for this year’s RAFCA is on Wednesday, September 6, and entries must be brought in to the Aquatic Centre in the week before. “Again this year, there are great cash prizes for all categories, including $500 for Best in Show. Entry forms are currently being sent out to all previous competitors, and will be available in hard copy at the Council front desk, or online on the Council website,” Cr Smith concluded.

CLEAN-UP AFTER “REX” ON OUR SPORTS GROUNDS Clean-up after your pet on Cowra’s sport fields, or you’re breaking the law! Cowra residents and ratepayers are reminded that, not only must they keep their dogs under control at all times in our public places, they must also clean-up after their pets. After recent feedback from local sports clubs, Council’s Ranger Services is focussing on the presence of dogs and other animals in and around the local sports reserves. Residents are also being advised of the penalties for not cleaning-up after Spot.

“It is an offence under the Companion Animals Act for a pet owner to not remove any faeces or droppings left behind by their animal. The fines start at $275 per offence,” Council’s Building & Regulatory Services Manager, Luke Sheehan said. “It is certainly not Council’s aim to unnecessarily issue these fines... but it may be the only option in an attempt to eliminate this growing problem,” Mr Sheehan added.

NOMINATE NOW FOR PEACE AWARDS Do you know a young person that embodies the spirit of peace in their words and actions? Well now’s the time to nominate them for the 2017 Cowra Youth Peace Award. The annual award is coordinated by the Australian Chapter of the World Peace Bell Association and seeks to recognise a young person who has served the community by making a sustained effort to help others. “In these times of global terrorism and international insecurity, it’s important to foster and recognise peaceful attitudes and actions within our own community, especially amongst our young people,” Peace Bell Association Chairperson, Ian Brown, explained. This year, the Peace Bell Association has extended the nomination process to the Rotary Club of Cowra Senior Peace Award as well, giving community members another opportunity to recognise hard-working volunteers in our town. Nomination forms are available from Cowra Council, the Cowra Guardian office or can be downloaded from Council’s website at www.cowracouncil.com.au. Nominations close on Friday, 1 September, with the Awards to be announced at the World Peace Day dinner on Tuesday, September 19.
