COUNCIL AT WORK — WATER METER REPLACEMENT PROGRAM Cowra Council recently enacted a replacement program for old and damaged water meters for residential areas of Cowra to reduce water wastage and unit failure for ratepayers in the Shire. The schedule of replacement works is designed to limit problems with old meters rupturing during periods of extreme cold over the coming winter. Last year’s relatively dry winter with a number of sub-zero temperatures at night and early mornings saw about 70 water meters requiring urgent replacement. Cowra residents and ratepayers are being asked to ensure that their outside water meters are covered this winter with cloth or other insulating materials to protect the meters from exposure to direct cold. This reduces problems with water freezing in the above-ground meters which can then rupture the units leading to total pressure loss and potential water damage to their properties. “Early April, before the cold weather sets-in, provides a timely reminder to check your outside meter to ensure that it is not exposed to weather extremes which can occur later in the year in our Shire,” a Council spokesperson said.
