Canowindra Charmed By Nicole Kidman Despite “Strangerland” Security It’s almost a shock to see the normal calm that’s descended again on Gaskill Street after hundreds of residents and visitors made daily pilgrimages there last week with one thing on their minds – catching a glimpse of Nicole Kidman. Despite a block on local media access to Nicole and her co-stars, Hugo Weaving and British actor Joseph Fiennes, and efforts to keep spectators at a distance, her own friendliness, spontaneity and charm gave locals many moments they’ll probably remember forever. I was pleasantly surprised for instance, when, after the last take of a scene in which Nicole drove a car along Gaskill Street, she stepped out of the vehicle and strolled calmly back down the street stopping to shake hands and chat with women and kids along the footpath.
These warm encounters happened again and again throughout the week-long filming as the willowy wrath-like actress stopped to pose with mothers and children and other spectators. In one memorable incident, Pip Thompson got totally fed up when security personnel tried to move her from a spot close to the film set near her antique store. “I told them I’m staying here, I’m not budging,” she says. “I ended up sitting within a few feet of Nicole herself, chatting with her”. And it wasn’t just Nicole who’ll be remembered for reaching out to Canowindra - Hugo Weaving also made an impromptu visit to the pubs and clubs in Canowindra. By Derek Maitland

Dear Editor, This morning’s news report that efforts to reduce the growth in atmospheric carbon have, to date, been unsuccessful. As our newly elected government has worked to demolish organisations that might have had some success in this regard, then it reverts to the community to take the task upon themselves and work locally to install more solar power on houses, barns and possibly even to build a community power station to harvest our local resources more effectively. A Community Bank would be a great way to help fund such a project. P.H. Herb Gardner

WELLNESS Corner By Dr. Adam Wild Chiropractor, Aligned Health & Wellbeing Last time we talked about physical inactivity and how it is a major risk factor for nearly all chronic health problems we face today and that exercise is a requirement to live a healthy & happy life. Did you know that in 1998 heart disease killed 949 619 people in the US? Brisk walking for only 30 minutes, 5 times a week would have prevented 284 886 of these deaths. Amazing! 30 minutes equates to 2% of your day. 2%! No matter how busy you are, you can spare 30 minutes a day for your health. This also reflects current guidelines and is a great place to start. Studies show that intense interval training has a much more profound effect on your health and this really should be our goal. Great news is there are fantastic local exercise programs available. Angela Ellis is running group exercise workouts called ‘bootcamp’. Not ready for a group or want one on one attention? Madi Vitnell is taking on clients for personal training. Also I am running a local health initiative focused on exercise in light of this recent column and invite everyone to come along. There will be information on how to make successful changes to improve you & your family’s health. Light refreshments will be provided. For information on any of these services, please contact 63441119

Dressing to Impress Tommy from the Deli has splashed his talent all over the old Hardware Store opposite his café. With the help of Kate and Sarah Barclay, Tommy voluntarily decided to dress up the Hardware windows in an attempt to wow visitors that are expected to flow into Canowindra for the upcoming Balloon Challenge. One side showcases bits and pieces from his house that promote the upcoming Tallulah Artiste show which is set for the 22nd April at the Canowindra Services Club. The middle window displays an ‘Easter Eggstravaganza’ with little bunny rabbits, Easter eggs and bright colours for the imminent festive season. “We are expecting so many visitors in the forthcoming week and I think that this building is beautiful but does look a little sad. I’m thinking of decorating the windows for every special event to add a little colour and excitement to the town. I mean, what little kids won’t get excited about seeing Easter decorations in the window”, Tommy said.
Tommy’s talent and experience window dressing at David Jones in his past life have definitely shone through, lighting up one end of the main street and adding a little bit of pizazz to Canowindra’s historic façade. By Jessica Jenkins
Defibrillator Update Currently we have sold $330 worth of raffle tickets with additional support from the following businesses, The Phoenix, Adloyalty, Rosnay Wines, Everview Retreats, Canowindra Trading Post making a total of $450.00 and a personal donation by Nina Kallas. Canowindra Icebreakers have also donated $290. Our total at the moment is $1170. So the Challenge remains to the businesses of Canowindra to match the donation of $100 set by the Phoenix to raise these much needed funds. We only have $2330 to go! Donations can be made at the Phoenix office or to Lisa Cartwright.
Kid’s Art Competition - Local kids have been incredibly busy drawing, painting and creating for the Kid’s Art Competition. The level of work gone into these pieces is just fantastic! The art is currently being showcased in the Library window, as well as a shop window across from Finn’s Old Store. The deadline for entries is this Friday the 18th April. For more information on how to enter, please email dannielle.jenkins@adloyalty.com.au. Locals encouraged to ‘dress the town’ - We have but days until the launch of the Canowindra Balloon Challenge, and the locals are strongly encouraged to get festive. Balloons will begin flying from 6am on Tuesday 22nd April, and will fly twice a day for 6 days, splashing colour throughout the Canowindra sky. Why not splash a little colour yourself? We are strongly encouraging shop owners and local residents to help ‘lift’ the town. So come on Canowindra, let’s dress some shop windows, gardens and homes – we want visitors to be ‘blown away’.

CATCH of the Week
IMAGE: Photos with the stars
Snippets from the Town of Nathgari The filming is now over but many locals will remember the week Nicole Kidman, Hugo Weaving and Joseph Fiennes graced our very streets. Everyone seemed to find the filming a great catalyst for publicity, the local economy and tourism, with people from all over the world talking about our ‘remote outback town in Australia’. “It was great for the town, it really has put us on the map and I think that out of all the towns in Australia we were one of the lucky ones chosen, absolutely fantastic”, Johnny Lawrence boasted. Many also got to experience the other side of the filming industry, by working right next to Nicole Kidman, helping out the crew or taking selfies with the stars and making the headlines of national news and media.Gwen Campbell was ecstatic to film a scene right next to Nicole Kidman in her very own workplace as a checkout chick. “I was so excited; I mean I’m going to be a star!” Gwen gushed.
Tommy Jeffs was thrilled to see Hugo Weaving walk into his Deli and serve him coffee. Jackie Yeo got her 5 minutes of fame on the hit show on Southern Cross Ten ‘The Project’ – even though she managed to pronounce Hugo Weaving’s name wrong she is still a star in our eyes. Oh and by the way she has a brand new album coming out ‘Spanish Breakfast’ by Jackie Yo! Dot Cain was lucky enough to score an extras part and was overwhelmed with how lovely everyone was. “Everyone was great, we all made some great friends and it was like one big family, I enjoyed every minute”, Dot said. Nearly everyone in Canowindra was involved somehow and was truly a memorable week. This is also not the first movie to be filmed here; Canowindra has had many brushes with fame, and might have to start ‘Canowindra’s Walk of Fame’. By Jessica Jenkins

Your free weekly guide to what’s happening in and around Canowindra...shop locally first! As discussed in my last edition we were going to explore the Neutral palette. Neutral palettes are not just cream but can also be grey, silver, beige and white. I am often asked how do I make my cream walls look less boring. It’s what you put with that neutral palette that makes it turn from a boring room to a spectacular space. I love neutral palettes because it gives you huge flexibility. Rooms are about layers. So if you have a neutral colour on the walls you can start layering colours. What do I mean by this, take 3 of your favourite colours and remember that depending on what cream you have whether it is warm or cool You need in some respect to stay with cool colours or warm. Now depending on the light factor for that room you can choose those three colours in varying shades Go to a paint shop and choose your three
favourite colours from the paint chips and use these as your guide. REMEMBER If your room is dark go for light shades of your favourite colour and if you have lots of light choose the darker shades. Now walk around your home and gather the things that are that colour and start arranging them in that room. By adding these three colours in different shades you will create a layering effect and give the room a harmonious effect. Neutral palettes are great for room flexibility and allow you to change your colour scheme around whenever you feel the need for a change. So be brave and have fun. Decorating is about having fun. In next month’s issue if you have a decorating dilemma please email the editor and will answer any questions you may have. By Kim Lowe interiors 0417 392 239 53 Gaskill Street, Canowindra

First Grade, Canowindra vs. Burrangong Sunday 13th April – The Canowindra Tigers were in fine form on their home ground as they roared through the Burrangong Bears, with the final score of the day 44 - 8. Great work to the boys who scored the tries: Matt Mclean 2, Nick Willson 2, Kain Earsman 1, Brenton Wooley 1, Brendon Traves 1, and Mick Mason 1. Players Player was awarded to Brydon Hughes for his fantastic enthusiasm and effort throughout the game. Congratulations Canowindra First Grade! In conjunction with this the Canowindra Senior League Football Club used this as an opportunity to award a Life Membership Badge and shirt to John Chittick (Chick Chock). John has dedicated himself to the Canowindra Tigers for many years, and has played a very big part in shaping the football club. John is an extremely well respected man, and Dick Marsh was highly honoured to present him with his Life Membership.

Canowindra vs. Condobolin @ Canowindra, Sunday the 13th of April. The Canowindra Tigresses stood their home ground, even after Condobolin scored in the first few minutes of the game. Canowindra were constantly pushing themselves into Condobolin’s territory throughout the whole game, but unfortunately Condobolin won with a scoare of 30 - 18. Great efforts were made by the Canowindra Tigresses as they did not give in once throughout the game and were defending their home ground until the end. Congratulations to Jamie-Lee Edwards for scoring a try, and to the Players Player Mel Rue who scored and converted her own try. Mel had a fantastic game as she chased down the Condobolin girls and really worked with her team to push forward.
Roller Derby
Congratulations to Canowindra local Staci Watson who participated in her first Roller Derby Bout at Bathurst over the weekend. Staci was one of only two women from local Orange, Bathurst and Oberon teams who were selected to play in an exhibition match hosted by visiting Southern Sydney team, South Side Derby Dolls. Staci has been training with Orange Roller Derby League since 2011 but due to safety requirements and minimal team numbers, has been unable to compete in a fully-fledged match (called a Bout) until last weekend.
Youth League
Grenfell vs. Canowindra @ Canowindra Jayden Brown was able to match the scoreboard with the half time score set at 4 all. Grenfell came back into the second half scoring a try. Alex Willson scored a try within the last few minutes of the game. Unfortunately the conversion was unsuccessful, giving Grenfell a very close win of 10 - 8. The Canowindra Tigers Youth League boys played extremely well for their first time together
