New Deputy Premier For NSW Elected A week ago today, Troy Grant, former Member for Dubbo, was elected as the new Deputy Premier for NSW. Mr Grant made his way up the ranks to Inspector during his 22 year career with the police force and believes this has helped him during his shift to the world of politics. “There’s no better training ground. In the police you see how the government can help or hinder communities and I can take that experience and apply it now” he stated. Mr Grant is a member of the National Party and wants to change the way people view regional issues, “I want to break the stereotype of what people think are country issues. We have every challenge and more of what people in the city have.” Mr Grant is humble when it comes to his political career, “I’ve exceeded all aspirations. My only focus was to be the best member for Dubbo electorate
I could be and now I intend to do my best as Deputy Premier.” Mr Grant has described himself as the “accidental politician” due to him being asked to take on the role, but he is excited for what lies ahead. “I am glad, people ask me if I miss the police and I do. I miss the camaraderie. But as a Nationals MP it’s very similar, we are like a big family and our goals aren’t about ambition but about helping our communities. I have great pride in what we have achieved during these three and a half years on the back of a terrible economy. We have turned that around, but we still have a lot of work to do and it’s my job to ensure we do it well.” We wish the Deputy Premier the best of luck in his new role. By Rhi Quinn

Letters Dear Editor I see my eponymous comments deserved a place, thanks. The edition 315 (09/10/14) has some scope for comment. Eddie Wilkinson is spot on with the suggestion to run the feeders for buildings at the back of buildings along Gaskill Street has merit, but the main cost to consumers will be the re-positioning of their distribution through their buildings because the wiring will be of some antiquity and very fragile. That the new ring feeders and drops to the meter boards should be underground is a given. Do it right the first time is the mantra that should be applied. Then we have the question of perhaps a ‘Federation’ design of street lighting - muted and many would be my contribution, similar to the old gas lamp standards of London. My first job in Canowindra was as a ‘Trainee Linesman’ with the Central Western County Council until I enlisted in the RAAF in ‘64. Regards, Bob Sherwood

Principals News Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with Tommy Jeffs to discuss the ideas for a fundraiser for our school planned for the 28th November. The Cabaret Extravaganza promises to be a great night of fun and frivolity and once again reflects the amazing support our community so willingly gives our school. Not only would I like to publicly thank Tommy but also everyone else who has come on board, our school truly appreciates their efforts. Neryle Smurthwaite Principal of Canowindra High School

Garden Club Outing- Last Saturday lucky Garden Club members travelled to the outskirts of Blayney to “Cloudyhill”, a wonderful native garden owned by Alex and Fiona. The garden boasted many types of native plants and trees with spectacular views. The couple moved from Canberra in 2006 and have since put time and thought into their home and garden to make it a special place they were kind enough to share. Afterwards the Club went to Drayshed Nursery for a picnic lunch, where they browsed at the nursery’s innovative wares. It was then home to Canowindra to check out the Twilight Markets. Thank you to the patient bus driver who helped pack plants into the bus without complaint. Thanks also to Gwennyth McCarron and Anne Ward for organising the outing. Open Gardens- Following with the gardening theme, this Saturday is the Canowindra Open Gardens Day from 9am-4pm. Seven gardens will be on display all with different themes ranging from Mediterranean, exotic, veggie patches, native and much more. For more information you can access the brochure from the Canowindra High School website.
Grandparents Day- Everyone has fond memories of the being at their nan and pop’s place – it’s where you’d go to get the kind of love that only a grandparent can give. This year Grandparents Day will celebrate our shared memories of being at home with our grandparents. Grandparents play an important role in the home and in the community, many grandparents are unpaid carers while other still work or volunteer. Their commitment to support their families and local community is invaluable and this is a fantastic opportunity to thank them for this. Historical Success! John Davidson and Dorothy Balcomb unveiled one of the new interpretive plaques in the Merriganowry Pioneer Hut on Saturday at the Historical Museum. Descendants of early settler owners of the cottage were in attendance and delighted the audience with recollections of the Hut’s rich history. Yet another great reason to go and visit this fantastic piece of Canowindra’s past.

IMAGE: Dramatic formations of the huge Cliefden Cave network (Photo by www.hillsspeleos.org).
John Cobb Defends Water Security Against Dam Threat To Cliefden Caves Calare federal MP John Cobb has staunchly defended the proposed Needles Gap dam project in the face of claims it would destroy the Cliefden Caves that lie under the site and are said to be more extensive and magnificent than the Jenolan Caves. The cave system is on private property near the Belubula River and has been undisturbed
by all but speleologists and academic specialists over the many years since it was discovered. Sydney University caves specialist Prof. Armstrong Osbourne says the system contains “magnificent helictites [and] rare blue stalactites” and that the proposed dam would flood not just these caves but
the nearby Fossil Hill site which is part of Canowindra’s internationally acclaimed 360 million year-old Devonian fish fossil deposit. Nonetheless, the 90,000 mega litre dam project, first mooted by John Cobb and enthusiastically supported by the state MP for Orange, Andrew Gee, is now the focus of a NSW government feasibility study with funding for its construction earmarked in a proposed $325 million budget allocation for water security. In a series of questions put by the Phoenix to John Cobb, we asked whether the existence of Cliefden Caves had been taken into account when the dam was proposed and whether “there’s a need for a second look at the site in view of this natural treasure below it.” Mt Cobb’s reply made it clear that water security comes first. “I have been and will continue to be passionate and proactive when it comes to proposals that ensure water security for the people of Calare and Australia in general,” he said. “Water security is essential to ensure our region continues to prosper.” Mr Cobb made no mention of the caves in his reply, stating only that the NSW government’s study of the dam proposal “will investigate the geotechnical, environmental and preliminary design factors, which will all be considered before a final decision on the dam is made.” By Derek Maitland

IMAGE: Keith and Anne Bartley and their 1914 antique with (right) fellow Dodge enthusiast Stuart Westerman.
Jammy Dodgers You could have called Canowindra “Dodge City” last Saturday as no less than 101 beautifully restored Dodge cars dating back to World War 1 paraded about the town. The antique vehicles, ranging from old flatbacks from 1914 right up to the sleek sweptback curves of a green 1933 DDP Salon, looked right at home in Canowindra’s heritage architecture, reminding residents what our streets looked like in the glamourous days of faded black and white photography. The cars were driven by members of the Dodge Brothers Car Club of Australia who are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the iconic American-born vehicle, and members came from all states of Australia and even New Zealand to take part in the centenary road trek. After being on the road for six days they spent a night in Canowindra before resuming the journey Saturday afternoon through Forbes and Parkes.
Typical of the precious models were a 1914 Dodge driven by Keith and Anne Bartley from Dalby in Queensland and their friend Stuart Westerman’s 1928 black coupe that looked reminiscent of those that careened and screeched around the streets full of hoods blazing away with Tommy guns in Chicago’s infamous gangland crime days. All in all, the visit topped a year in which everything from restored antique motorbikes to Cobra touring race cars to cancer charity vehicles with blaring bells, horns and whistles and, of course, the annual Camp Quality Tractor Trek, have poured into Canowindra. Dodge was founded as the Dodge Brothers Company in Detroit in 1900 and supplied parts for other auto-makers until it began building its own vehicles at the start of the Great War. It was sold to Chrysler in 1928. By Derek Maitland
A few weeks ago Anne Ward sent in an excerpt to us from the British newspaper The Telegraph about a Bed & Breakfast named Canowindra. The B&B, which is located on the Isle of Skye just off the coast of Scotland, has owners with “Australian heritage” and Anne was curious as to whether they named their business after their home-town. After a bit of investigating, owners Rick and Georgie de Boer solved the naming mystery. “The reason we are called Canowindra is because Rick is from the Brisbane area and I wanted to bring some Australian (culture) to our home. From a search of aboriginal words and names, Canowindra stood out as its meaning is ‘home’.” The couple hope to settle in Australia one day and say, “who knows we might go to Canowindra, home away from home!” Although they don’t have a direct link with our town it reminds us here of the roots of our community… and the word “home” seems to suit perfectly. If you would like to stay in the Canowindra B&B, you can check them out on their website www.canowindraskye.co.uk

Safety First At The Yards This Month… The Coomera wearers were out again in force this month at the Cowra Regional Livestock Selling Centre. Yardings held firm with numbers and prices remained consistent as they have over the past month. The Selling Centre specialises in prime cattle sales every Monday from 12.30pm and prime lamb and sheep sales every Friday at 11am. October 10th was Saleyard Health and Safety Day, hosted by Cowra Shire Council, at the Yards. Physical and mental health checks were available as well as safety information for farmers. The event included staff from Workcover NSW, Rural Financial Counselling and Community Health plus medical students from local Universities. For more information on safety in the yards check out the Australian Saleyard Code of Practise. This is a guide to aid saleyard operators in achieving the required standards for health, safety and welfare for the sale of all classes of livestock within Australia. The top priority in any Saleyard is the health and wellbeing of the people there and the animals and now the days are getting
hotter one of the main risk factors is overheating. Temperature and shade Working in hot conditions can cause heat stress, heat rash, heat exhaustion and in extreme cases even heat stroke. Yards should allow for adequate shade for cattle and handlers and plenty of water for stock. Covered yards are more comfortable and stress-free for handlers. The race and crush area are the most important places to cover. Early signs of heat exhaustion include: Headache, irritability, thirst, fatigue, nausea, stomach and muscle cramps, shortness of breath, muscle weakness and lack of coordination, cold clammy skin, confusion and a rapid pulse. If you experience any of these get in the shade, rehydrate and if symptoms persist contact a health professional. What Women Want... Weddings are stressful. Trying to create “The most perfect, best, amazing day ever ever EVER!” can make any sane woman temporarily lose her marbles. If you’re a blushing bride to be, here are some pointers to discover whether you’re turning into a bit of a “Bridezilla”. 1. You demand unrealistic goals of your bridesmaids. If you’re asking your best mate since kindy to lose 20 kilos, dye her hair bubblegum pink and have tattoo removal...you’re probably asking too much. 2. You make ridiculous demands of your guests. Remember, they’re guests, not hired slaves. Uncle Dave is probably going to get blind drunk and bust some moves on the dance floor and the children will endlessly pop balloons. Take a deep breath and accept. If you fear this could be you don’t stress, Blondies Bunches in Cowra can ease some

Get It Right And Get In Quick With myTax With just one week until the 31st October deadline, the ATO is encouraging self-lodgers who haven’t completed their tax return to check if they are eligible to use myTax, designed for people with more straightforward tax affairs. Assistant Commissioner Karen Anstis says feedback from the almost 800,000 people who’ve used the service has been overwhelmingly positive. “What we’re hearing is that myTax has made lodging online so much easier and people are completing their tax much faster.” MyTax has 10 main screens to review and uses prefilling to automatically include information from employers, banks and govern-
ment agencies, making it even quicker and easier to complete your return. It only asks the questions relevant to your circumstances and is available on smartphones, tablets and computers. “For example, a 20 year old just entering the workforce shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not they qualify for the seniors and pensioners tax offset,” said Ms Anstis. People will still have to enter any deductions, including work-related expenses. Already this tax time, four million people have claimed work-related expenses worth around ten billion dollars. This new way to lodge your tax return is a step toward a more modern and time-efficient way
to handle your money. For people with more complex tax affairs, e-tax is still available to download from the ATO website. You can visit ato.gov.au/deductions or call 13 28 61 to if you’re unsure, to be certain you get it right.

IMAGE: Racing at Eugowra – two-day event organised by four people
Should We Bring The Harness Back? Anyone who enjoyed Eugowra’s Canola and Gold Cups harness racing weekend last month must have wondered at some point why we in Canowindra can’t match the spectacular crowd-pulling event. We have a track here at the Canowindra Showground. We still have at least three harness racing families,
though competing elsewhere. We have a long history of trotting that includes being the “first club in the west to sponsor harness racing under lights.” We also still have a Canowindra Harness Racing Club committee of five volunteers headed by Darryl Fliedner who must yearn
for the days when the sport was a regular fixture here, attracting trainers, punters and families looking for an exciting day out, from all over the west. Eugowra staged 20 races on the October 5 weekend, including the finals of the Canola Cup and $20,000 Gold Cup challenges – all a celebration of its 60th anniversary. The event was packed with visitors enjoying local food and wine and featured a fashion contest, live music and a bouncing castle for the kids. And as one committee member pointed out: “We did it with an organising committee of four, with the help of 25 volunteers. We haven’t even got a grandstand – it’s fallen down.” So if Eugowra can do it, why can’t Canowindra. According to locals, there just isn’t the same enthusiasm and drive here at this time to revive what was once a flourishing local attraction. “Twenty years ago we could field a total 120 horses,” one former local harness racer has told the Phoenix. “But the equine flu outbreak badly hit us. Then local trainers began drifting away.” In these times when Canowindra is focusing on promotion and attracting more paying visitors to grow its economy, there’s hope that the harness racing potential and spirit can be revived. The Phoenix says here’s hoping.

What are you links with Canowindra? My uncle is from Canowindra and my fiancé, Luke Watt, and his family live here. I also have so many good friends here. Where do you currently work? Gungahlin Veterinary Hospital, Canberra, as a full time veterinary nurse. Have you always wanted to work with animals? Yes, as a child I wanted to work at a Zoo. I love it because they are so thankful for the simplest thing you do for them and are always happy to greet you. I am now a volunteer at Canberra National Zoo and Aquarium too. Favourite animal? Dolphin - I would love to swim with one eventually. Do you enjoy living in Canberra? Not much at first because the people were as outgoing as country people tend to be. It you won the lotto what would you spend it on? I’d get Luke to build a house with a pool in the middle of it and water slides! Plus give some to the family. Hobbies? Water skiing, tubing at Wyangala, playing netball, going to the beach. City or country living? Country living for sure. I will most likely move back to Cowra or Canowindra when I’m older.

You couldn’t have wished for a finer, sunnier pre-summer evening last Saturday for the annual Twilight Markets in Canowindra. And the townspeople made the most of it, pouring into the Memorial Park to enjoy a wide variety of stalls including Rosnay, Windowrie and Peewees Bakery to name but a few. While families wandered the stalls or lounged in groups on the grass they were entertained by local folk and blues singers Josh Maynard, Nerida Cuddy and Julie Bates. The evening offered the added attraction of Canowindra’s historical culture, with the Historical Museum and its astonishing array of relics thrown open right next door. Visitors were also treated to the unveiling of new signage for the museum’s most treasured exhibit, the Merriganowry Pioneer Hut. Two of the most popular vendors on what turned out to be a particularly hot spring evening were Harriet Agostino and Georgia Robson, pictured at their stall offering ice-cool lemonade along with chocolate cake and Belubula Butchers ham rolls. Swimming
Over 50 swimmers braved the cold water on Friday. Michael Coady was lead improver of the night as he smashed his 50m backstroke PB by 14 seconds (did he have flippers on?) Other improvers were Eden Hawker slicing 7 seconds off her PB and Amber Johnson improving her time by 5 seconds, both in the 50m freestyle. The Spoon semis and final didn’t go ahead but hopefully will run as normal this week. In the relay there were 28 swimmers left standing divided over 4 lanes. Lane 2 came out on top just a second over lane 1. Amelia Earsman, Finbar Smyth, Julia Wright, Dominic Smyth, Marshall McKay, Damon McKay and Connor Munroe all took home their relay pennants.
Tennis
Two weeks of junior competitions have been played so far. Matches on the orange sized court have been even. Tori, Poppy and Eden all scored 2 games each in week 1 with all players starting to get their serves into play. Matches have also been even in the green section, with many matches having tied results. Husdon tied with Mikelli and Ky 2-2. Will won against Julia but she bounced back to tie with Lara 3-3. Jess and Claire also tied 3-3. Harry had a strong win in week 1 with 4-0. These junior tennis players are having great matches and the rallies and construction of points is improving each week. Well done everyone.
New players are welcome to join the comp. It is $30 for the term which includes your insurance and registration. Enquiries to Helen Garratt 0407139164 handlgarratt@bigpond.com
