Funding For Footy

On Tuesday Andrew Gee, Member for Orange, presented the Canowindra Rugby League Club with a cheque for $13,120 at the Tom Clyburn Oval. The money is part of a grant under the NSW Government Footy Facilities Fund and will go towards concrete flooring for the canteen areas, a switchbox for the lights and a new electronic scoreboard. Terry Quinn, Chief Executive Officer of Country Rugby League, was also present and said, “Out of 13 grants approved 11 were country. Canowindra’s a bigger town and has the potential to be the centre for lots of events.” Ken Wilson, President of Canowindra League Club was excited at the new opportunity, “it’ll improve enjoyment and tidiness; it’s a good step forward. Once we get a switchboard we won’t have to go round the dressing sheds

and poke our hands in the cobwebs to turn the lights on!” he joked. Andrew Gee was also pleased at our town’s development. “Sporting clubs are a vital part of the fabric of country communities. This doesn’t only support the Tigers but the whole community including the Balloon Glow and school projects. Given the importance of this facility it’s a wonderful grant and hopefully there will be more to come. I congratulate the Club on making their application and for their hard work.” As Mr Gee said, this grant will make a fantastic improvement to our grounds for the Tigers and all other sporting teams that play on it… and we can’t wait to see the scoreboard.

Congratulations Colleen, you did it girl! Great evening of entertainment and of hope. The many hours and weeks of you organising is an amazing effort. Your talk was very inspirational, even though you were far from being well. Great black clouds and lightning threatened to mar the event, but I would like to think my son Stephen, in some small way, made sure the storm didn’t hit. The lantern walk was beautiful and very emotional. You must be very proud. Well done and thank you, Lee Webb

Dear Mick Clyburn, As the Editor I wish to apologise for the Thumbs Down put in the Phoenix last week. The Thumbs Down was not true, Mick had been “dacked” by one of his friends and they thought it would be funny to send it into the paper, all being done in jest. I was made aware that it was a joke and believed that Mick was happy to have it go in, as a joke. Sadly, this was not the case and this is a classic example of a prank gone wrong. Again apologies for any inconvenience or upset caused. Regards, Editor

Keep Shining This has been a big thing to organise but with the committee I think we’ve nailed it. I wasn’t sure if I could organise this event but after suggesting a walk around the oval Felicity said, “that sounds ok but don’t overdo it!” From there I talked to Max from the Lions Club about a BBQ and they approved. Max said I was brave for doing this but I wanted to do something for the Leukaemia Foundation and also to thank Canowindra people for their thoughtfulness when I was sick. My cancer began as a pain in my left side. They eventually told me I had Lymphoma and I had 6 lots of chemo which made me very sick. That was 12 months ago and I haven’t been well again so Im back on chemo. I live one day at a time with lots of hugs, which is wonderful therapy. Thanks to the Lions Club, Ken for the PA system, Anthony Durkin for getting the Oval mowed, the police for keeping an eye. Thanks to the Phoenix, Canowindra News, Prime, Win and 2GZ, to Geoff Beath for the truck, Tommy Jeffs for the window, Johnny and the IGA girls. Thanks to the craft shop, to the Preschool children, to everyone who sold tickets in the street, to Tim at Duck IT for his patience with me. Thanks to the Services Club for their support, to Rev Jono, Dr Kumar, Dr Dunkley and Dr O’Ryan, to the girl at the Health Centre. My committee team have been marvellous. My dream has come true. I wanted to do something for cancer and this was it. Cindy, we did it…”Light The Night” was emotional for me and I hope what we’ve raised will help. Keep your lanterns shining at home, well done Canowindra and all that supported this event. Around $9000 has been raised so far for the Leukaemia Foundation. Welcome To The Jungle - If you were in town last week you may have got a shock as a Rhino cruised through Gaskill Street. “Ronnie” as he’s known, belongs to Pat who is part of Swagman Tours. They specialise in African Safari tours for the thrill seekers among us from Cape Town to Nairobi. However on this particular day, Ronnie and Pat were heading to the Australian National Field Days, where around 18,000 people went to enjoy over the weekend. Ronnie just wanted to see the sights and have a rest before the final leg of the journey! If you would like to know more about Swagmans Tours visit swagmanafrica. com.au

All Hallows Eve - Or Halloween, as it’s better known, is upon us tomorrow. Traditionally it’s a day where it is said the dead can once more walk among the living and wearing costumes and masks derived from people trying to disguise themselves to hide from evil spirits (although in Canowindra the only evil spirits you’re likely to meet come out of bottles at the local pubs). If you’d like to get involved in this ancient tradition, get dressed up and get your spook on at the Royal Hotel. The Royal will be transformed into a haunted house with frightening drinks and music to get your bones shaking. There will also be a $150 cash prize up for grabs for the best dressed, courtesy of the Phoenix. The only question left is…are you a treater, or a tricker? First Gig Success - Demi Grimshaw was nervous before she performed her set at the Canowindra Hotel last Friday, but she needn’t have worried. The beer garden was packed with listeners who cheered her on and she delivered a fantastic evening of music, not bad or a first attempt! Well done Demi!

Hottest Tradie - We are still searching for any tradies who are brave enough to enter our competition! You have the chance to win $100 prize money and prizes courtesy of Jack Evans Workwear and all you have to do is send in a picture of yourself in your work gear, perhaps posing with a trowel if you so desire. mark on the Pre-School path. Some students decided to draw pictures, other wrote their names and some have family names on, giving the path a personal touch. The outside play area has also had a makeover thanks to some handy preschool mums and dads. The area is now adorned with bright coloured fences and a larger chook yard. The chook yard is the new home for the baby chicks the kids watched hatch and then cared for inside the school until they were big enough to enter their new outside home. New plants and a good tidy up have the playground ready to use in the Spring and Summer months. The kids of the Preschool have also been busy getting involved in the Light The Night which took place over the weekend. They made lanterns to help raise awareness and funds for the Leukaemia Foundation and they did a fantastic job! With only seven weeks of term left the Preschool have a lot to look forward to, from photos and working on their portfolios to performing at the Christmas Concert. 45 kids will be graduating and heading off to big school, so it’s set to be a busy end to the year! Enrolments are now open for 2015, any enquiries call 63441261 or email admin@canowindrapreschool.com

Reaching New Heights! Tilga Heights is Canowindra’s newest development thanks to Barney and Nicky Robson. The Estate is located on Tilga Street and McDonald Lane, close to the Oval Sports Ground and has units perfect for the over 55’s or homes that would be ideal for young families. You know that Mr Robson has faith in the Estate as his Mum is now living in one of the blocks, which come with wheelchair access, water tanks and secure parking. The blocks are triple the size of most

blocks in the area, meaning you can get a lot of land for your money. 2 houses and 2 duplexes have been built so far, with plenty more space for people who want to design their dream home. The Estate has 1 half acre 2000 square metre at $95,000 and 6 1 acre blocks 4300 square metre at $115,000 left with five blocks already sold. It’s a great location, a stone’s throw from sporting grounds, the hospital and school all within walking distance with a taxi service close

by too. All blocks are ready to go with three pace power, sewage system, sealed road, water and phone lines already completed. House/land package deals are readily available, just ask. The duplexes are ready to inspect and the units are spacious with small, easy to look after gardens. Come and have a look, you’ll be surprised at value for money. Open Gardens Day Raises $3,000 For Skate Park Upgrade A combination of three months’ hard work and this year’s beautiful spring weather combined to make Canowindra’s annual Open Gardens Day a fruitful success last weekend. The event not only spotlighted some very deserving gardeners and their beloved creations but also attracted more than 200 visitors and their children and raised more than $3,000 for upgrading work on the Rodd Street skate park. There were a total seven gardens on show in Canowindra and in Gooloogong and visitors paid $15 to tour all of them. One of the most popular was Chris and Lorraine Daly’s “semi-formal garden with roses and hedges” at 98 Rodd Street, which offered particularly creative ideas – gardens, arches and ornamental walls – for an in-town five acre lot. As Lorraine and Chris describe it, “This residential block was originally an orchard and vegetable garden before the house was built 20 years ago. The house design, with sur-

rounding verandas, maximises the northern sun in winter [and] the garden is semi-formal with Japanese Box hedges and Standard Seduction and White Iceberg roses in the front and along the driveway. “A Pecan Nut tree at the end of the driveway is a feature and was planted around 50 to 60 years ago. The back lawn has a central square garden featuring Burgundy and White Bush Iceberg roses, planted eight years ago. The ornamental grapevine over the northern pergola provides another shady spot in summer and is striking in the autumn when the leaves turn several shades of red.” The open day was another triumph for organiser Ash Wright, and her devotion earned this glowing comment in Tuesday’s Canowindra High School online report: “Ash Wright, you are a legend!” Highest praise was also directed at 20 high school students and their parents who volunteered their help on the big day. By Derek Maitland

Bushfire Season I feel this is a perfect time to look at the dangers we face over the summer months and what precautions can be taken to protect yourself from the risk of bushfire. “Steel doesn’t burn” is the most common response I get when I talk to farmers about fencing. After 10 years in the insurance industry and a few million worth of fencing claims dealt with, it may not burn but it certainly will be useless to you after a major blaze. So what does it all cost? – Fencing cover will vary from each insurer but on average $100,000 worth of coverage will start at $300 and at a cost of around $10,000 per kilometre to replace fencing can you handle a major loss? Livestock is another area which I constantly see people not insure, once again the insurance rate is around $300 per $100,000 cover. Why wouldn’t you do it? It’s easy for me to preach what you should do but if you give me a call I’m more than happy to look over everything and offer as much advise as I can. Give me a call on 0419 919 509. Fire Ban Crackdown

IMAGE: Andrew Gee Member for Orange; John Cobb Federal Member for Calare

Local MP’s At Loggerheads Over Dam Funding Media Quote The proposal for a new 90,000-megalitre dam at Needles Gap has come under focus once again with the state member for Orange, Andrew Gee bluntly quashing a newspaper report, quoting federal MP John Cobb, which links it with the possible sell- off of the state’s electricity poles and wires. The report appeared in Orange’s Central Western Daily last Thursday along with comments by Mr Cobb, regarding the project’s funding. It included a section dealing with the state government’s announcement that it would fund a feasibility study of the scheme and quoted John Cobb as saying: “Andrew Stoner had set aside not only money for the scoping study and in-depth study but he triggered the rest of it with the sale of the poles and wires.” The CWD continued, without directly quoting Mr Cobb: “The cost of the project is an estimated $150 million for the initial construction and the announcement was made

about the same time as the state government said it would sell off 49 percent of its electricity infrastructure.” Andrew Gee has described the comments linking the dam with the electricity privatisation proposal as “incorrect and inaccurate.” “If a new dam is to be built in the Central West ... funds will be allocated from the Water Security for Regions program. There is ample cash in the fund to cover the cost of any new dam.” Mr Gee’s retort underscores the state government’s sensitivity over stiff opposition to the proposed electricity sell-off, particularly as the issue may well become a key election issue next year. The dam itself has also come under fire from environmentalists as its proposed site near the Belubula River lies over the highly protected Cliefden Caves which are said to outrank Jenolan as a natural treasure. The Phoenix has sought a response from John Cobb. By Derek Maitland

In what is predicted to be a difficult bushfire season, tough new penalties will empower the New South Wales Police Force and the NSW Rural Fires Service (RFS) to bring those who deliberately disrespect Total Fire Ban warnings before the courts. Under these strong new measures, offenders can be prosecuted under a new offence and face a fine of up to $132,000 and/or seven years jail time if they deliberately light or allow a fire to escape their property on a Total Fire Ban day. A jury can still find someone guilty of the existing offence which carries serious penalties of up to $110,000 and up to five years jail time, if they think the person did not have enough warning that a Total Fire Ban was in place. Other amendments to the Rural Fires Act 1997 will streamline fire permit requirements and ensure those who throw lit cigarettes, matches or other “fire objects” from a vehicle will be held accountable, not just the registered owner. A lot of people ignore warnings and conducting burns on their own properties with complete disregard for Total Fire Bans. Out of control fires have a devastating impact on life, property and communities. By Rhi Quinn

Summer is calling and you want to look good in tiny shorts and singlets, fast! Googling the latest juice cleanse diet or promising yourself you’ll eat only one carrot a day and work out every two hours is all well and good, but it takes effort to shed pounds and get healthy for real. The first thing to remember is no one is worried about how you look in your swimming cozzy except for you. Secondly, this means you should want to get fit for summer purely for yourself, which will help with motivation in the long run. Thirdly, sad as it is, there are no short cuts to becoming fit and healthy. As you originally feared, the only thing that works is portion sizing, healthy eating choices and you guessed it, exercise. At Canowindra Personal Training we tailor programmes to suit your specific goal. We can offer one on one instruction or group sessions for all ages and with gentle encouragement to help get you on the right track. You want results? You have to put the hours in. It may sting at first, but we promise it will be worth it. By Ron Lake

Ben Hall Movie On The Horizon? Production of the much-anticipated movie, “The Legend of Ben Hall,” has reached the point where a pilot of the first draft is being released in a matter of days from now to attract funding for a major upgrade of the project. The film’s Melbourne-based writer/director/producer, Matthew Holmes, says new funding would allow expansion of the film’s story and script and a second shoot, or filming project, “at the end of this year or early next year. We’re absolutely still in produc-

tion,” Matthew has told the Phoenix. “We’ve completed one block of the film and we have another block to go. Depending on the new financing, we’ll make the movie far better, even more dramatic, and also recruit a couple of A-list actors.” Matthew Holmes plans to have the movie completed for the 150th anniversary of Ben Hall’s death in May next year. But unfortunately, Ben Hall’s famous raid here in Canowindra won’t be featured in the film.

“Our story is of the last six months of Ben Hall’s life, culminating in his controversial and very violent death outside Forbes,” Matthew says. The first filming has featured relatively unknown actors and “cameo people” in Australia’s TV and movie industry, but already there’ve been plaudits for the performance of Jack Martin, a rising actor, who plays the role of bushranger Ben Hall. “We’ve already had keen international interest in the movie, especially from the USA, where Australia’s Ben Hall is America’s Jesse James, and other countries where people are crying out for new Western-oriented movies,” Matthew says. “We think the release of the first pilot, or trailer, will make a big splash at home and overseas.” The project is relying on corporate and public financing and its vigorous fundraising campaign through Kickstarter raised around $100,000 for the movie’s draft production – a feat that Matthew describes as pretty amazing when you consider that it’s difficult for Australian films to raise more than around $20,000 through this funding operation. “It’s just struck a chord with people,” he says. The public is being canvassed directly by Kickstarter, offering all sorts of prizes and special deals, for donations as low as $1, right up to $7,500, for the production, and you’ll find just how novel this scheme is on their website at https://www.kickstarter. com/projects/legendofbenhall/the-legendof-ben-hall-an-australian-western-30-mi. Cricket

Last Saturday Canowindra A Grade played Valleys at Holman Oval in Cowra. After winning the toss Canowindra sent Valleys in to bat first. Valleys got off to a strong start in the 10overs until a bowling bhance from both ends aw G. Singh and P. Guthrie really tighten things back up, bringing on a run out from Brendan Traves last ball. After drinks Singh and Guthrie continued bowling leading to 2 more quick wickets putting Cano back in the front foot middle order. Later hitting saw Valleys post a very defendable 7/186 from their 40 overs. Pete Guthrie and Ben Schaefer opened for Cano’s turn to bat but lost an early wicket with Ben Schaefer getting caught for 8 and G. Singh fell not long after for 0. Matt Harrison joined Pete Guthrie for 79 at the end of the 40 overs Canowindra fell 15 runs short. It was a close game that didn’t fall Canowindra’s way but all players did well. Next game this Sat against Grenfell at Grenfell, 12.30pm.

Junior Tennis Comp was held in hot conditions last Friday. Lara and Jess kept it friendly and tied at 2-2. Hotter weather brought out over 70 swimmers on Friday night all lined up for the Spoon heats. It was a close finish in the Spoon final with Connor Munroe winning a few fractions of a second ahead of Zali Dunn. Backstroke again saw the best improver as Marshall McKay annihilated his PB by 20 seconds. The relay lead changed several times between the 6 lanes but it came down to a swim-off between Ellie Dicton and Max Wensley. Ellie held off Max to win with her teammates, Stewart Russell, Georgie Fisher, Damon McKay, Magnus Cleary, Hannah Etty, Oliver Etty, Ryan Ellis and Sammy Austin. Please remember to sign up for Friday events before Wednesday as late entries will not be accepted. A late start means a late finish!
