The Big Lift Bus Comes To Town

Australian Credit Licence 240722

A busload of students from the University of Technology in Sydney visited Canowindra on the 4th of July to lend a hand at the Public School, Preschool and the Community Garden. The Big Lift is a student run university society which takes about 80 students from Sydney to various regional towns to complete volunteer projects ranging from painting, gardening and demolishing unused buildings. The group arrived on Saturday afternoon and enjoyed activities including a scavenger hunt and a visit to the Age of Fishes Museum. On Sunday the enthusiastic group of students worked hard on the Canowindra Public School chicken coop and veggie patch as well as doing some general maintenance on the building. There were also students working on the Canowindra Community Garden and

other horticultural work at the Canowindra Preschool. “We loved Canowindra,” said Town Organiser Daniel Martinez, “and we had an amazing dinner organised by the Canowindra P&C for which we were very, very grateful.” The bus will continue its’ 9 day journey from Sydney to the Gold Coast and back again. Louisa Scott, a final year communications student and President of The Big Lift says “the idea is if we keep doing our little bit, the world will keep being a better place. The Big Lift helps students break free from the cycle of a degree, as they find a community of likeminded individuals and they get to talk to real people who do huge things for real communities.” By Rosi Broom

Does your customer service leave a smile or a grimace? Did you know that 68 per cent of customers who leave your business do so because of the indifferent attitude of a company employee, and only 9 per cent are won over by the competition? If you are a business owner, what are you doing about that? I recently visited a friend in a rather large country city and she gave me the names of three businesses to visit, as they were the types of shops that I like visiting. I was astounded by the complete lack of service or greeting in the first two places I visited. In the first shop, there was a young girl yawning behind the counter. She didn’t greet me or even attempt to leave her seat. In the second one, a lady was buzzing around but once again there was no actual greeting. In the third business, I was greeted and asked if there was anything I was looking for and if I needed any help.

To Kelly and Ming at the Golf Club for their delicious, tasty and fresh Chinese food. It’s worth the wait!

To the disgustingly rude “local” man who abused a local restaurant owner on Saturday night. Shame on you!

To Allan and Andrew for the great job they did splitting our wood on the weekend. It’s great to live in Canowindra!

To the local businesses getting on board with the Christmas in July window display already. They are looking fantastic!

Later that day I was telling the story of my visits during the morning and of course I told more people about the bad experiences than the good ones. The saying is that you tell 10 people about a bad experience and only a couple about a good experience. However, this has now changed thanks to social media. The world hears about the bad experiences and sometimes the good ones. Successful businesses, small or large, make customers a part of their team – the real reason a business exists. It is not enough to be delivering on your service promises, you must also be seen to be delivering on those service promises. Ensure you show your customers that they are valued by keeping them informed and ask them for their feedback to help you continuously improve the level of assistance you provide. Let customers know when you make a change. Make customers feel that you are on their side. Take responsibility for meeting customers’ expectations. So please share with us your customer experiences. Is there a business which excels and one which you always want to do business with? Give us some suggestions for how some businesses might be able to improve their level of customer service.

Snippets... Amalgamation – have your say! A new petition is available at the Canowindra Bowling Club, Canowindra Golf Club, Canowindra Services Club, Canowindra Pharmacy, Canowindra Newsagency and other businesses across Cabonne. All Cabonne residents are encouraged to participate. The Canowindra Phoenix has been nominated for an award in the Daroo Business Awards. Thank you to those who voted. Has your business been nominated for an award? Let us know! IMAGE: The new pavers have been laid on the Fitness Path

The Fitness Path is complete! The pavers which were purchased by local residents last year have been laid outside the amenities block recently. The new pavers look amazing. If you haven’t seen it yet, go and check it out! Raising a roof for the Read Triplets: About 60 people are now on the training team preparing for the annual City2Surf in Sydney to raise funds for the Read Triplets. There are a lot of Sydney people and about 20 locals. Anne Ward said they would like more local people to join up. “Our casual training sessions are on Saturday mornings at 9am at the Fitness Path and are open to anyone interested in joining up.” There is a lovely historical parallel between what the town is doing for the Read Triplets and what the town did 100 years ago for a soldier returning from World War I. Hamilton Croucher was born in Canowindra, joined the AIF and suffered injuries at the 2nd battle of Bullecourt on the Western Front in France. Subsequently he had both legs amputated. Croucher returned to live in Canowindra after the war and the town raised money to build a purpose-built house for him with wheel chair access and no steps. The house still stands on the corner of Ferguson and Tilga Streets.

The NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards recognise volunteers and promotes the importance of volunteering in the community and nominations are now open. If you know an outstanding volunteer who deserves recognition, nominate them for the award at www.volunteering.com.au until July 17th. Congratulations to Amber Meurs, the lucky winner of the Canowindra Phoenix giveaway! Amber is the recipient of a family pass for four to a movie of her choice. Butt it out! NSW Health is reminding the community that all commercial outdoor dining areas in hotels, clubs, restaurants and cafes are now smoke-free under the SmokeFree Environment Act 2000 as of July 6th. The ban will apply to all hospitality venues and to all smoking devices including cigarettes, pipes and water pipes. For information on how to quit smoking, call Quitline on 13 78 48. Look out for your new Betta Home Living catalogue with offers of 50 months interest free on approved purchases. There is also an opportunity to receive a Betta Gift Card on selected products making purchases more affordable. Check it out today!

Cabonne Council are now issuing water and sewer accounts on a quarterly basis, as of July 1st. The first quarterly account will be raised in October and issued in November. This initial account will be for 120 days to allow for the transition to quarterly billing. Call the Council on 6392 3280 for more information. NAIDOC, Congratulations to the nominees of the Cowra NAIDOC Week Awards “The level and breadth of nominations again shows the achievement of our Aboriginal community in fields ranging from sports, dancing, community leadership and contribution to the community,” said Cowra Mayor Bill West. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of NAIDOC week. Claim the date! The 2015 Variety Bash will stop at Canowindra Public School for lunch on August 13th on their journey from Melbourne to Cooktown. Everyone is invited to attend this amazing event. Canowindra IGA presented the Preschool with a cheque recently; just another example of how the IGA gives back to the community through their Community Chest initiative. Thank you IGA!

IMAGE: Ironwood will be performing at Baroquefest in October this year.

Funding Boost For Baroquefest Baroquefest, a three day music festival to be held in Canowindra in October this year, has been recognised and supported by National and Regional Arts funding bodies. Noticing the quality and potential of the event, Australia Council for the Arts has offered a grant of $10,500 to assist Canowindra Fine Music in developing and growing the festival, aiming to benefit regional school children interested in fine music as well as the region in general. Canowindra Fine Music is a small group of energetic and enthusiastic people, and as Australia Council for the Arts is a premier arts funding body in Australia the group are particularly excited to have the Baroquefest event “recognised by such an auspicious group”. More funding for the event has come from Orange Regional Arts Foundation, Arts Out West, Musica Viva and Cabonne Shire Council, a massive boost that Canowindra Fine Music very much appreciates. “The support of these funding groups has

not only ensured the inaugural Baroquefest will succeed, but opens the door for Canowindra Fine Music Group to create other similar events and assist other groups to promote and operate their arts events,” a representative from the group said. Baroquefest brings two major ensembles and other musicians from the Central West region and beyond to celebrate a resurgence of Baroque music, a style of Western art music composed between 1600 and 1750. A variety of performances will be held across Canowindra. Companies and individuals will be offered the choice of purchasing specific concert tickets, or buying a gold, silver or bronze sponsorship package. The packages come with benefits which could include priority seating, printed and signed programs, Rosnay wines, commemorative wine glasses and more. Seats will be limited so save the date and book your tickets early to avoid missing this fantastic opportunity to experience some of music history’s greatest masterpieces.

Smart phones are completely changing the way in which we manage our money. The super-fund-owned bank ME claims that mobile banking is not just convenient but safe too. Not surprisingly, Australia has one of the highest rates of smart phone ownership in the world, with almost 37% of Australians owning one. Figures suggest that Australians are 65% more likely than the British and 14% more likely than Americans to use a smart phone for mobile banking transactions. Mobile banking is so convenient, because transactions can be made outside business hours, mobile banking is paper free and you can track your savings, purchases and bill payments wherever you are because your bank account is at your fingertips. But many people won’t use mobile devices for banking transactions because of safety concerns and worries that their money and personal details will not stay private. The Australian Federal Police have collaborated with the Australian Bankers Association and developed a check list to help you keep your online banking safe and secure: 1. Lock your phone with a password when not in use. 2. Make your mobile banking PIN difficult to guess. Memorise it instead of writing it down. 3. Don’t record private banking details on your smart phone or email those details to yourself. 4. Only use password protected internet connections. Free Wi-Fi is not a secure environment for online banking. 5. If you lose your phone, call your bank straight away to disable your banking app. By Rosi Broom

It is a fair generalisation that Australians are culturally obsessed with their coffee. Across the country, chic cafes and funky coffee hotspots flourish as people line up to order their preferred cup. “Australia’s coffee market is reasonably mature, with coffee consumers quite sophisticated and the café sector highly competitive,” said Retail Food Group Franchise CEO Andre Neil. Coffee is one of the most sought out commodities in the world, second only to crude oil and is worth over $100 billion worldwide. “Coffee consumption trends are actually quite varied across different countries, for example customers in China drink coffee well into the night rather than the morningfocused trade we see here in Australia,” said Mr Neil. While there have been rumours that coffee consumption might be declining, café culture is as alive as everand Australians have earned the reputation of “coffee snobs”. Considering Starbucks opened 84 stores in 2000, and closed 61 of those stores eight years later because simply not enough people had walked in the doors, it is obvious that Australians are big supporters of their local café industry. The Central West region has a plethora of cafés and coffee shops to try out. Open from Tuesday to Sunday, Mt Canobolas Tea House offers a delectable menu for breakfast, lunch and dessert. You can relax in the tranquil setting and breathe the fresh country air as you choose from a selection of mouth-watering cakes, slices, pies and tarts. The generous mid-week lunch specials and

exceptional services will keep you going back for more. Mt Canobolas Teahouse also caters High Teas and other functions. Visit them today for more details. You will find it close to the Botanic Gardens, the perfect atmosphere to relax and enjoy delicious meals with a Greek influence and take in exquisite views of Mt Canobolas. Curry Night A Hit!

IMAGE: Graeme and Alison Beasley pictured in front of the cosy fire at Old Vic Inn.

The Old Vic Inn Named As A Finalist In The 2015 Inland NSW Tourism Awards Mayor of Cabonne, Michael Hayes has congratulated two Cabonne businesses after they were named as finalists in the 2015 Travel Inn Inland NSW Tourism Awards. Canowindra’s Old Vic Inn, together with Lakeview Luxury Apartments near Orange, are among 13 finalists from the Central NSW Tourism region, who will be in the running for the awards when they are announced at Broken Hill on 25th July, 2015. The awards are presented each year to acknowledge tourism excellence in the Central West, Inland, Murray and Riverina tourism areas. “It is a significant achievement to be selected as a finalist,” Cr Hayes said. “These awards recognise the high standard of professionalism and innovation the finalists have shown in their field.” The Old Vic Inn has achieved multiple successes in previous years and is a member of the Inland Tourism Awards Hall of Fame. Graeme and Alison Beasley said “we are delighted being named as one of only two final-

ists in these awards.” Graeme said, “in order to be considered for the Awards we enlisted the help of Lisa Starr from Starr Designs, who helped us draft and design the 30 page submission, which accounts for 80% of the points allocated.” The Tourism Judge from Inland Tourism visited with Graeme and Alison and stayed overnight, dined in the restaurant, and met with the owners and staff, all as part of the overall point scoring. Criteria which had to be met were: first impressions, product, management and staff, customer service, services and facilities, WH&S risk and sustainability and professionalism. Both Graeme and Alison will be attending the awards on the 25th July and we wish them all the best. In the meantime, if you are looking for somewhere to go and have a nice cosy drink, then head to the Old Vic Inn and enjoy their roaring fire any night of the week. By Cheryl Newsom

Tommy Jeffs’ Curry Night was held at the Canowindra Bowling Club on Friday 3rd July as a fundraiser for the Club and it was a sensational night. The evening was sold out and local musician Oli Statham and his band performed to a full house of food lovers and community supporters of all ages. “It was a great crowd and people really enjoyed the large variety of curries we served up,” Tommy said. Food on offer included a lamb rogan josh, a Thai chicken curry, a beef curry by the ladies at the Bowling Club and all the accompaniments, like pappadams, yoghurt and fresh breads. There was a shortfall of $500 in the fundraising which was generously donated at the end by Tommy himself, and the new curtains will go up in the Bowling Club this weekend. “I’d like to say a big thank you to Radka, Ellen and Moyna who helped out, and a huge big thank you for the community support toward this great cause,” said Tommy. “It was a really lovely crowd and there was a fantastic atmosphere on the night.” Without the backing of this kind and generous community, fundraising events like these would not be a possibility. We now look forward to Tommy’s Big Italian Night on Friday 4th September, a final fundraiser for the venue, so save the date and get out there in support of your local Bowling Club. Tommy envisages that all upgrades to the Club will be finished by the end of September. He and the ladies of the Bowling Club will host a High Tea to celebrate the cosmetic upgrades their hard work has achieved and to invite the public to see see the Club’s new look. By Rosi Broom

That’s my process in the studio.” When it comes to inspiration, Oli takes his cue from modern artists like Ben Harper and Xavier Rudd, as well as musical masters like Jimi Hendrix. “I’m into playing covers in all different styles,” Oli said. “Mum made me do classical piano lessons as a kid, which is a really good formative thing to do. I mucked around with the drums until one of my brothers showed me how to play guitar at age 15. I did a music course and set up a studio in Newcastle. Up there I started recording my own album, my own stuff.” With hopes of building a new studio within the next year, Oli’s next step is to finish recording an album and release it. IGA Canowindra Store Owner John Lawrence says that Price Match will enable Canowindra customers to shop locally without having to pay more. “Every week, we compare and match hundreds of everyday products, so you won’t pay more to shop at your local IGA,” John said. “Price Match will come as welcome news to Canowindra residents who want to support their independent grocers but have previously found it more expensive to do so,” said John. “Not only does this initiative provide savings to shoppers’ hip pockets but when you shop independent you also support your local community.” Price Match excludes promotional and specials pricing, but two cents from every sale of an IGA Signature product is donated to IGA Community Chest, which raises funds to support local communities, charities and other worthwhile causes. “The money Canowindra customers spend at their local IGA filters down into the community through the IGA Community Chest,” John said. “It is really a win-win situation because by shopping local at an IGA store, customers are also helping us in our commitment to keep supporting and building independent Australian brands and suppliers.” This initiative is great news for local consumers who will see significant savings when shopping at participating IGA and IGA SUPA stores in NSW.

Cowra’s Solar Savings

New solar panels have been installed at Cowra Council’s Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) and Waste Operations Supervisor Craig Lynch said it is a great way of re-using sunshine at a facility that already has a 90 per cent recycling rate. The 20 kilowatt system features 80 panels and will reduce energy costs at the MRF by thousands of dollars each year meaning it will have paid for itself within three years. “We should cut our bills by about twothirds,” Craig said. “We currently pay about $15,000 a year; we hope to cut that to about $5000 per annum.”

The system has only just been installed and Craig believes that the big savings will come in Cowra’s hot, radiant summers. “Any excess power we produce also goes back into the grid.” Craig added that the MRF is already making world-class savings in recycling waste and reducing landfill, catching the attention of other councils in the region. “We’ve reduced waste to land-fill by 30 per cent over the past five years,” said Craig. “We’ve even got other councils coming over to see how we operate.” By Rosi Broom

Rugby League The Canowindra Tigers were home to Burragong and ran out winners with a score of 746. In the first half, the Tigers scored 8 tries to completely dominate the opposition. The first try was scored in the fifth minute to Alex Willson, and another one in the twelfth minute by Aaron Earsman, which really put the pressure on the Burragong side. Matt McLean scored a try in the seventeenth minute, David Bermingham scored a try in the nineteenth minute and Simon Badgery struck back from injury with a try in the twenty-fifth minute. Jayden Brown and Josh Trayhurn both scored in the final minutes of the first half. Canowindra struggled to concentrate in the second half, allowing Burragong in for a soft try. This seemed to kick them into gear as they ran another seven tries, but it wasn’t enough and the Tigers came out winners. Player’s player was shared between David Birmingham and Jayden Brown.

The Canowindra Tigresses took on the girls from Burrangong Bears on Sunday. It was a game the girls were expected to win and they didn’t disappoint with a victory of 50-0. Led by their stand-in skipper Mel Rue, the team showed a professional defence, holding their line against the Bears’ barrage of attacks. After surviving the early onslaught, the floodgates opened. Teiya Thornberry and Alicia Earsman demonstrated great passing skills, hooking up with Hannah Roth and the electrifying Krystal Coker. It was pleasing to see the middle runners backing up on the inside when breaks were made out wide, and their win was well deserved. Player’s player was shared between Mel Rue and Krystal Coker.

The Big Red Run

Alison Stephens, a local mum of three had a fantastic finish in the Big Red Run in the Simpson Desert last week! Alison was the first female competitor over the line and she came third overall. The event was a 250km, 6 day stage race beginning at 7:30am on Saturday 27th June and finishing up on Thursday 2nd of July. It is a fantastic achievement for Alison to place this well in the 5 marathons completed over 6 days. The event started at the Birdsville Pub with a lap around Birdsville before heading west towards the impressive Big Red sand dune which was home for the following 2 nights. Day 1 of the event was the Birdsville Marathon of 42.2km, day 2 was the Adria Downs Marathon of the same distance, and day 3 was the Arpilindika Marathon of the same distance again. On day 4, the competitors completed the Sprigg Sprint, a race of 31km. Day 5 was the Mohan Marathon which was the equivalent of two individual marathons back to back; a total distance of 84.39km.

Day 6 was the Birdsville or Bust event which was a final 8km run to Birdsville Pub, followed by a late afternoon awards BBQ and entertainment. The Big Red Run aims to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and money raised will help fund the best and most promising Type 1 Diabetes medical research to cure, treat and prevent this disease. Alison raised over $10,000 for JDRF, an amazing achievement for her and all those who supported her in this cause. “Hopefully this will inspire more people in Canowindra to get outside their comfort zone and see what they can achieve,” Alison said. “It was a really great opportunity to put my mind and body to the test.” “My support team was absolutely fantastic and the kids were always cheering which was great.” Alison and her family will now enjoy a wellearned holiday before returning to Canowindra in a few weeks.
