Raising A Roof For The Read Triplets Channel 7’s Sunrise was in town on Wednesday to film footage of Canowindra’s own City2Surf team, and to tell Australia about the incredible cause the team supports; Raising a Roof for the Read Triplets. The team together with family and friends made their way down the main street for film crews and then congregated at Finns Store for breakfast. The group is made up of 57 people who are entering into the City2Surf race, either from Canowindra or who are friends and families of the team members or the Read Family, aiming to help them build a “miracle house” to meet ongoing needs. Anne Ward, an organiser of Raising a Roof for the Read Triplets said they had raised an incredible $24,000 with more pledges still scheduled to come in and work on the build-
ing will start soon. “We’d like to give a special thanks to IGA and Gaskill Greens for providing breakfast, and for all those who got up early and braved the cold so we could have a team walking down Gaskill Street,” Marg Wallington said. “After the City2Surf is over, everyone is invited to join us at the Waverley Bowling Club to celebrate this great fundraiser,” Anne said. There are still four days left before the event so if you want to get behind Canowindra’s own City2Surf team and support the fantastic cause of building a “miracle house” for the Read Triplets, make your donations today. Visit www.raisingaroof4readtriplets. blogspot.com.au The footage will be aired on Sunrise on Sunday morning. By Rosi Broom

Dear Editor, Our classic car club recently visited Canowindra as part of a weekend away. Unfortunately one of our members suffered a major heart attack and passed away on the Saturday evening in the Canowindra Hospital. Our club members were overcome by the incredible care displayed by so many of your local residents. On behalf of our deceased member’s wife and our club members please accept our heartfelt thanks to all who were so wonderful to us under these difficult circumstances. In particular our thanks to the management and staff of the Services Club, the firemen who so diligently attempted to resuscitate our friend and to their beautiful wives who were so caring for our friend’s wife. To the ambulance officers and the doctor and staff at the hospital. Our thanks also to the two Police Officers who could not have been more gentle and caring.
Thank you all for all for what you did for us on that difficult night. You should be very proud of the wonderful people that you have in your community. Rod Luke Member of the Temora Antique Motor Club

THUMBS DOWN
To whoever submitted the thumbs down about me! I’m alarmed to think that I have ticked someone off, as I should be something you can count on. Has it really been 20 years? Surely you’re winding me up – how time flies! Without going into minute detail, I urge someone with a bit of mechanical knowledge to give me a hand to get working again before I go cuckoo. Sincerely, The Town Clock.

organisations and individuals have been invited to start their own tree planting projects. The program aims to see 20 million trees planted across Australia by 2020. “This is a great opportunity for people who are committed to conservation and green spaces,” John Cobb said. Grants are between $20,000 and $100,000 for projects which will re-establish vegetation, provide habitat to support threatened species and improve local environment. Over 20 Canowindra business owners met last month to discuss ways to market Canowindra as a destination. They identified 3 key themes to be developed: country lifestyle, food and wine, and history. The Business Chamber have costed the activity and will present to members at the next Business Chamber meeting. Is it time to fix the town clock? After last week’s town clock Thumbs Down, we have another Thumbs Down this week FROM the town clock asking if he can be fixed! Is there someone in our town with the skills to fix the clock, or would Canowindra like a new town clock? Come on everybody, let us know what you would prefer so the Phoenix can get behind it!

Mitchell Conservatorium returns to the acoustically gifted Eskbank House with an exciting chamber music program performed by Mitchell String Quartet. The talented members of the Quartet, Andrew Baker, Nicholas Newell, Fiona Thompson and Sybbi Georgiou have been collectively presenting chamber music concerts in the Central West for over 30 years. Mitchell String Quartet was launched in November 2014 at their inaugural and highly acclaimed performances in Lithgow and Bathurst. This year they are excited to return to Lithgow for this concert series. This incredible group of musicians are passionate about offering high quality, beautiful, accessible and well known chamber music repertoire to audiences across the region as a regular feature of the Mitchell Conservatorium’s concert calendar. Joining the Quartet for this program is Justin Screen as clarinettist for Mozart’s beautiful Clarinet Quintet and Glazunov’s Oriental Reverie. Mitchell String Quartet will be performing at Eskbank House in Lithgow on Friday 7 August at 7:30pm and at Mitchell Conservatorium Bathurst on Saturday 8 August at 7:30pm. The Bathurst Chamber Orchestra, which is a Mitchell Conservatorium Ensemble, is a community string orchestra comprising around 20 local string players. The group is made up of professionals, tertiary music students and gifted amateur players. Supported by the Bathurst Regional Council, the Bathurst Chamber Orchestra is recognised as one of the region’s leading community orchestras. They play a major role in providing audiences with accessible and affordable opportunities to enjoy live performances of a wide range of well-known and new orchestral repertoire. Performing alongside traditional string-orchestra repertoire, the Bathurst Chamber Orchestra regularly collaborates with professional woodwind, brass and percussion players. They also work with other ensembles such as the Allegri Singers for performances of works such as Handel’s Messiah and Haydn’s Creation. The performance program includes Glass Company, Barber Adagio, Bartok Romanian Folk Dances and plenty more. To purchase tickets or for more information, call Mitchell Conservatorium on 6331 6622.

New research suggests that many Australians are still unaware that frequent consumption of sports drinks puts dental health at risk. The research commissioned by the Australian Dental Association revealed that many of those who drink sports drinks are unaware that the amount of acid in these drinks can lead to teeth erosion in as little as five days of daily use. Even though saliva is a powerful natural defence mechanism against erosion, saliva does not have enough time to repair the damage if teeth are exposed to the acids in sports drinks too often. In Australia, three in ten adults have untreated tooth decay. What’s worse is 50% of children under 12 years old have experienced untreated tooth decay in their permanent teeth. “Over the last few decades, the oral health of Australians has started to deteriorate, and in particular we are seeing higher levels of dental disease than ever before,” said Dr Peter Alldritt, Dentist and Chair of the ADA’s Oral Health Committee. “It is worrying to see that nearly one in two are neglecting their dental health by excessively drinking sports drinks, sipping them over long periods of time frequently each week, causing potentially permanent damage to their teeth.” Protect your teeth with these simple steps: • Drink water where possible – it has no acid, no sugar and no kilojoules. • Avoid sports and intra-workout drinks • Use a straw so your teeth are less exposed to the sugar and acid in the drinks • Protect your teeth by brushing twice daily
• Chew a sugar-free gum to help stimulate saliva flow that will help protect your teeth.
DonateLife Week
If you know anyone who has needed an organ transplant or replacement tissue, you will recognise the importance of DonateLife Week, Australia’s national awareness week to promote organ and tissue donation. Donation Specialist Sonia Braithwaite said DonateLife Week is a perfect time for people to have the conversation that could save a life. “DonateLife Week provides a timely reminder to all Australians of the need to discuss their donation decision with loved ones,” Sonia said. “Family discussion around donation decisions is vital. The majority of families say that having discussed and knowing the donation decision of their loved one made it much easier to support donation proceeding if that is their wish”. Only around 1% of people die in hospital in the specific circumstances where organ donation is possible. However, many more people can become eye and tissue donors as tissues can be donated up to 24 hours after death regardless of where death occurred. “While the possibility of organ donation is quite small, one organ and tissue donor can transform the lives of 10 or more people,” Ms Braithwaite said. Once people have decided about organ and tissue donation, they can register their decision on the Australian Organ Donor Register. For more information visit www.donatelife. gov.au.

Fond Memories For High School Teacher Canowindra High School have officially farewelled one of their most extraordinary teachers recently after the retirement of Mr Owen O’Laughlin, a teacher of Agricultural Studies. Owen first arrived at Canowindra High School in 1979 on his first official school appointment. “I wasn’t going to be a teacher but I got a four year scholarship and I was having a good time so I did my prac at Wagga Wagga and Yanco High Schools,” Owen reminisces. “I wasn’t convinced though, and I planned to only do one year to get my teaching certificate and then travel for a while before becoming an agronomist or getting work for the Department of Agriculture.” But that never eventuated; fate had other plans. “I did my first year and I fell in love with the small school,” says Owen, “it was only about 200 students then. I started playing rugby and squash and thought it was a great town and a great community.” Owen says the rest is history and 36 years later, he is still here and occasionally still teaching. He has remained at Canowindra High School his entire teaching career which Owen says is “rare for a teacher”. “I owe the town a lot because that’s where I met my wife Donna,” Owen said. “I’ve had three kids who all went through the Canowindra schools and I taught them all Ag Studies.” “I was mentored by Jack Sherwin who was a PE teacher loved by the community. He took me under his wing and taught me to be the most enthusiastic person in the class, to set high standards for students and to always try and reinvent myself every 5 years to stay motivated and refreshed.” “I’ve always tried to be innovative and on top of my game. I didn’t want to fizzle out so I left on a high note.”
IMAGE: Owen McLaughlin and Canowindra High School Principal Neryle Smurthwaite at Owen’s retirement dinner.
During his time at Canowindra High School, Owen had the pleasure of being involved in a variety of agricultural, community and school based projects and positions. This includes a tree planting scheme which won a state environmental award, a patronage for the sporting house Gilbert for over 25 years where he inspired kids with poetry, the rewarding position of Year Advisor for three groups, working as a HSC marker for many years and organising week-long Rotary Camps for students. Owen was also one of three teachers who helped write the Year 11 and 12 Agricultural syllabus in 2011, worked as a relief teacher, was very involved with the Archibull Prize, initiated a university link for students in the
region which was the first of its kind and watched on as many students went from strength to strength towards actualising their personal goals and dreams. In a speech at his Retirement Diner, Owen thanked all the people who had helped make his career so memorable and enjoyable, including the parents and farmers who’ve donated things over the years, the families who gave access to land and livestock for student education, the ladies in the office and the cleaners at the school. While Owen will still be teaching on a casual basis, he will now be able to spend more time at his hobby farm in Moorbel. By Rosi Broom
Petitions Presented To Government The signatures collected on an anti-amalgamation petition circulating throughout Cabonne during July have been presented to Andrew Gee’s office by Amalgamation No Thank You (ANTY) Spokesperson Marj Bollinger. “It went very well,” said Marj. “Mr Gee was very welcome and receptive towards our cause and said he would present the signatures to the Legislative Assembly,” the Lower House of the State Government. “We are extremely grateful to Mr Gee for his support in light of the strong opposition being faced from his Premier Mike Baird and Local Government Minister Paul Toole,” Marj said. It has been less than two months since a public meeting in Molong resolved to form ANTY, and since then over 2000 people have
signed petitions rejecting the NSW Government’s proposed amalgamation of Cabonne and Orange City Councils. “Late this afternoon, I was pleased to welcome members of the Cabonne AntiAmalgamation Group to my office to receive a petition signed by around 2,600 residents opposing a merger between Cabonne and Orange City Councils,” a statement from Andrew Gee said. “I will table the petition in the Legislative Assembly when Parliament resumes.” “Huge credit must go to the relatively small ANTY Steering Committee and Village CoOrdinators who have managed to get forms out and around the vast area of Cabonne in such a short space of time,” Marj said. “But most of all the credit must go to the citizens
of Cabonne and beyond who have been prepared to show their support.” “It has been a mighty effort from all concerned and we haven’t given up yet with submissions going in to IPART and letters written to Members of Parliament continuing.” The petition was drawn up by members of the ANTY group and made available at numerous business throughout Canowindra and across Cabonne. The Chamber updated its website recently with draft and sample letters and information for any resident who wishes to write to their Government representatives with an objection to local government amalgamations. School Canteen Grand Opening Canowindra Public School held their Open Day in conjunction with Education Week last week and celebrated the long-awaited opening of their new canteen facilities. Between 12 and 1pm, parents and families of students were invited to visit and explore the school, see their children’s work, look on at class rooms in action and chat to the teachers. Mr Toole and Mrs Berry, who are both planning to retire from teaching this year, were given the honours to officially open the canteen and revealed a plaque noting their involvement. The students were keen to don their chefs’ hats and have already had cooking classes in the new canteen with their class teachers and the garden and kitchen co-ordinator making delicious and healthy snacks like spinach and ricotta pastries. The new canteen comes in handy for the Breakfast Club too who use it every Tuesday morning to feed hungry bellies. The Peer Support Group are also using the canteen to make pasta using the school’s 5 pasta mak-
ing machines and will be used by Canowindra Public P&C for the Variety Bash lunch next week. The school’s new canteen ties into philosophies of self-sustainability starting in the classroom where every class has a bucket. All food scraps go into these buckets and each day a student takes it to the chook pen. Next to the pen, students are growing vegetables which they will then cook and eat together in the canteen. During the Education Week celebrations, Josie Mitchell was awarded with the Education Week Recognition Award for her outstanding contributions to all aspects of school, including sports, public speaking and academics. The Education Celebrations continued with the Lachlan Valley Learning Community holding a concert in Cowra involving talented students from schools across Canowindra, Cowra and the surrounding districts. Canowindra Public School Principal Sharon Hawker described the night as “a very good event”. By Rosi Broom
Doctor Bids Farewell The Canowindra medical field will see the end of an era this month with the long serving GP Dr A S Kumar finishing up his work at Canowindra Medical Centre. “After 43 years of serving Canowindra and surrounding districts as a General Practicioner, I have decided to take leave from full time medical practice,” a notice from Dr Kumar stated. “Dr Madduru and Dr Kaipu will take over ownership and running of the practice, along with the continued assistance of Dr Paul Cradock and Dr Dharshini Jeyelingam.” All other existing staff are also moving on. Dr Kumar expects to finish his work at the Medical Centre by Friday 28 August and urges patients and individuals to contact his office before that date if they have any concerns or enquiries. No doubt Dr Kumar’s decision will have a widespread impact on the community and it will be quite sad to say goodbye to one of Canowindra’s favourite practitioners, though we hope to still see his face around town. “I have enjoyed the privilege of being your general practitioner and best wishes for your good health and happiness,” Dr Kumar wrote.

Ross Cleary How long have you lived in Canowindra? Nearly 9 years. Lived in Sydney, West Wyalong and Canberra before that. What do you do for work? “Semi-retired”, involved with the Historical Society, the Board of the Lyndon Community, and St. Edward’s Parish Council. Run the HSC exams at Canowindra High. What is your favourite thing about Canowindra? That getting a coffee can be a 2 hour experience and so many helpful blokes shared with me their knowledge and wisdom. What music do you love? Mumford and Sons, Sheppard, Spooky Men’s Chorale, Pavarotti duets, Indigo Girls. Who would you have dinner with and what would you discuss? I’d like to know why my great-grandfather moved off the land at Grenfell, how did my convict ancestors get by, what went wrong in Grandfather Adams life, and a few more of the misfits who make up my family tree. Who inspires you the most? Denis Kelly from whom I learnt what true intellectual curiosity meant. What is the biggest change you would like to see in the world? “Give peace a chance” wouldn’t be a bad start. Honest political debate and genuine policy debate, not the rubbish we get dished up. Marriage equality.

Are You Dehydrated? If you’re feeling thirsty, or tired, you could be dehydrated, meaning that your body doesn’t have sufficient water and other fluids to function optimally. But there are other signs that could point to dehydration as well. A headache is one sign the brain rests inside a fluid sack, if that sack is not full of liquid, the brain can push against parts of the skull, causing headache pain. Cravings for sweet or salty foods is another sign of dehydration. Try drinking some water before reaching for that chocolate bar. Dry or flushed skin can indicate dehydration; this can be common in the winter because of constant heating, but can happen any time of year. If you’ve got bad breath, chances are that mouth is not producing enough saliva, which leads to bacteria overgrowth. Again, the cause is dehydration. What can we do about it? Here are some tips to stay hydrated: • Keep water handy. Jazz it up by adding citrus or any fruit to flavour the water making it more palatable and more drinkable. • Drink herbal teas or “infusions”. The herbs help the water get to where it needs to go in the body. Start carrying a thermos with you with hot water and your favourite herbal tea bags. • Choose snacks that have high water content. Fruits and vegetables are mostly water. Stay away from hard, dry snacks like chips, pretzels and crackers that have very low water content. • Choose water that is room temperature. Ice cold water needs to warm up in the stomach before it can go to the various organs it needs to go to. Yoveda, The Perfect Health Centre in Cowra has a great range of Herbal teas for winter, which both taste delicious and treat the body. Call in and ask about the Rejuvenate and Detox teas for winter. Changes to Black Spots Residents in Cowra and surrounding districts may find significant improvements in their mobile phone coverage from new mobile phone towers to be built at a handful of sites including Billimari, Gooloogong, Woodstock and Darbys Falls. “Seven towers will be built on greenfields sites or using existing infrastructure in the broader Cowra area and will extend coverage to a number of local communities,” Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said. Some residents are very excited about the scheduled improvements. “It’s very exciting news for Gooloogong,” said Emma Gosper. “As a little town, it’s great to be recognised and for issues to be

WALLA RUGBY
Rugby Gala Day A Success The Canowindra Junior Pythons hosted their annual Rugby Gala Day at Canowindra Sports Complex on Sunday. It started as a wet, windy and overcast day but gradually improved as the day went on. Clubs from all over the region descended on Canowindra and we saw some impressive games from all three age groups on the day. Canowindra’s teams put in a fantastic effort with each team playing hard and showing
great sportsmanship. Junior Rugby in Canowindra is gaining in strength and has a great community of parents involved which ensured our Gala Day was a success. We would like to say a big thank you to all the businesses and members of the community who have supported the club this year. By Anne Maree Rice
YOUTH LEAGUE
with only 10 players for the rest of the game. In a show of great enthusiasm, the Tigers hit back with two tries in the second half of the game with strong running from Sam Willson to force his way over. With a conversion from Daniel, this left the Tigers on 16 points. Eventually the strain of playing one man down against quality opposition began to wear the Tigers down. The Brahmans went on to snag a convincing win with the final score resting at 64-16. Player’s player and 3 points went to Sam Willson, with 2 points going to Will Middleton and 1 point to Jack Grant.
The Canowindra Tigers youth squad played against the Binalong Brahmans over the weekend at their home ground. With multiple players out of the game with injuries, the boys were still keen for a good showing. Talk had been positive all week so starting the game with 12 players each, a good contest was assured. Binalong were the first to score in the first five minutes of the game due to a poor kick from a Tigers player. The Juniors hung in and by the 12th minute they hit back with a try to Will Middleton after a strong run from Sam Willson. But the Brahmans capitalised on the Tigers’ mistakes and ran in three more tries before the break. Unfortunately, Wesley Blair was injured just before half-time leaving the Canowindra side
RUGBY LEAGUE The Canowindra Tigers First Grade team revved up the defence against competition leaders Binalong Brahmans last weekend,
but they unfortunately made too many errors which cost them big on the score board. Tackle counts were in the 30s and 40s; it was a credit to the Tigers and Binalong knew they were in a horrid contest. The Binalong side were first to score, earning points from a Tigers error. Five minutes later in similar circumstances, Binalong pushed the ball wide and went on to score in the corner, taking their lead to 10-0. Canowindra hit back with a try from Anthony Redfern and strong front row running, narrowing the gap to 4 points. It was a ding dong battle with both sides trying to get the upper hand. Binalong gained a repeat set, put the Tigers under pressure and added another 6 points to their score making it 16-6 at the break. The Tigers attempted to hit back again with a try from Jayden Brown after some good lead up work from their forward pack. Unfortunately, too many errors from the Tigers let Binalong off the hook and allowed them to gain field position. The Brahmans went on to score 2 more converted tries to seal the match. The final score was 26-10. Player’s player went to Kain Earsman.
LADIES GOLF July 22 had bitter weather but five brave pairs contested the first round of the Foursomes Championships, with three ladies playing nine holes while at the same time trying to dodge the sleet. The highlight of the day was another Nearest the Pin on the 5th at 150cm by Rozzie. Congratulations to her and her partner Helen Kemper who won the daily prize and the first round of the championships. Round 2 of the championships saw all five pairs turn up again hoping the sunshine would improve the golf, and improve it did with Annette and Eileen winning the daily prize. They are now only one shot behind the leaders Ros and Helen who are on 195. Rhonda and Helen C are also closing the gap and the pressure is on the ladies for the decider. The Eileen Garnsey Memorial Shield match play final will be between Helen Kemper and Eileen Wilson sometime within the next two weeks. Thelma and Marea had a wonderful time at the Far West Rose Bowl Tournament held at Warren last week. Since some greens were under water, the course was reduced to 12 holes. The Grenfell ladies were the eventual winners on the day and the Canowindra ladies congratulated them on the fantastic job they did in every aspect of the event. The Women’s Mountains Meeting will be hosted at Blackheath, Leura, Wentworth Falls & Lithgow, October 19th – 22nd, entries are open now. Planning is also underway for their Canowindra Tournament on Thursday 10th September.
