Stage 2 Excursion Stage 2 had a fabulous time on the excursion to Katoomba last week. Up bright and early on Thursday morning (thanks to all our parents who dragged themselves out of bed at this hour) some very excited children boarded the bus heading off to Hartley which was our first stop. Wow what a place! We were locked in the cell that held 35 convicts and still has graffiti on the walls from the convicts that were held there waiting for their trial in the courtroom next door. We weren’t impressed with the toilet bucket in the corner shared by all the convicts Eek!! We then went into the courthouse where a mock trial took place. Many of the students were able to act out as the legal representatives. Judge, guard or ladies watching the trials and of course the convicts. We are certainly happy that the cat of nine tails is not used now as a punishment. The idea of only eating gruel didn’t impress us much either. Then we had a tour of the old sandstone church which both the landholders and convicts helped to build nearly 140 years ago. We then headed for Blackheath where we met with some National Park rangers who showed us a number of Indigenous tools. Following this we went on a bushwalk where lots of bush tucker and medicine was pointed out to us. There were the leaves which were used as soap and waratah nectar was a sweet treat, one particular native leaf tasted like Sarsaparilla and another when the stem is whittled down makes a great toothbrush. Next was Scenic World and we went on the steepest railway in the world. What fun! Though some of us weren’t so impressed but were all laughing at the end. We went for a short walk along the valley floor before heading back up in the Cable Car. We were lucky enough to have perfect weather and could see for miles. We went around to the lookout to get a closer look at the Three Sisters before heading back to the YHA and collapsing for the night. Some children were very tired and were quick to get to sleep, which was lucky because we had another early start up and at breakfast by 6:30!!! Packed up and on the bus for our trip to Jenolan Caves. We were there in time to go for a walk around the lake hoping we might spot a platypus. Unfortunately they weren’t going to hang around to see us We then did a fantastic tour of Chifley Cave and were very impressed with the limestone formations and the stories of the early cave explorers. What brave adventurous crazy people they were. We then headed to Oberon for lunch and a run around before the bus trip home. A big thanks to our bus drivers who were very capable and got us to Katoomba and back safely. To the teachers who gave up time from their families and provided the students with this wonderful experience and to the 70 students who went on the excursion. Their enthusiasm and behaviour was exemplary and all the parents should be very proud of these wonderful ‘Mulligrubbers’
