Term 1 Week 1
1 February 2018
Dear Parents/Caregivers, Welcome to the 2018 school year! I hope that all families had a fantastic holiday and enjoyed spending time with family and friends over the long summer break. I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all of our new families who have joined the Cowra Public School community this year. I am sure you will love your time at our wonderful school! Our first week back at school has been a busy and exciting one as students have reunited with their friends, met their new teachers and settled into their new classrooms. A surprise visit from the Prime 7 Local News team on Tuesday saw many of our Stage 1 students in Miss Gorham’s class become overnight TV stars! By now, parents will have been informed that this year our classes have had a significant name change. At the end of 2017, a new administrative system was introduced to the school and the developers of this system have recommended against naming classes after teacher's initials (eg C2, S1) as this can cause problems with record keeping in future years. To prevent this, the school has elected to use the Wiradjuri names of mammals for primary classes and birds for infants, as this ties in with our school-wide Wiradjuri language lessons. We have attached a 2018 Staff and Class Name list to this week’s Newsletter to assist parents with this change. Tomorrow our brand new Kindergarten children will have their very first day at “big school”! A big thank you to all our Kinder parents for arranging to bring their child into school this week so that our Kinder teachers could conduct the annual Kindergarten Best Start assessments. Mrs White, Miss Causton and Mrs McFarland are very excited to have ALL their Kindergarten students start tomorrow and we look forward to watching them grow and learn over the coming weeks, months and years. Along with our new students, we also welcome several new teachers to the school – Mrs Tess Hopson (Assistant Principal Stage 1 and Gulambali 1 Class Teacher), Mrs Sophie Duke (Ganyi 2 Class Teacher), Mrs Bron Johhnson (Bandha 3 Class Teacher) and Mrs Fiona Skene and Mrs Amy Ryan (Guya 3 Class Teachers). Miss Prue James returns from maternity leave and will be sharing the Gadi 2 Class with Mrs Mel Montgomery, Mrs Amy Goodwin replaces Mr Don Reid as our Senior Psychologist - Education and Mrs Mandy Taylor joins the administration team and will be working in the office on Thursdays and Fridays. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful team of experienced and enthusiastic staff who are all very excited about the year ahead! During the holidays the school has had some major upgrades. The entire roof of G Block (Stage 3 area) has been replaced and external and internal painting in this area of the school has been completed. There will be an additional upgrade to the roof on B Block (Infants building) towards the end of the term and this will help to preserve this beautiful building for many years to come! Air conditioning has also been installed in the Windradyne Room and this will become the school’s new STEM centre. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and Mr Vogel will be teaching a new STEM program across all classes this year. Thank you to Mr McGill, Jo and Adam for their assistance with managing these upgrades during the school holiday period. Term 1 is shaping up to be a very busy one and our first major event will be the School Swimming Carnival which will be held on Tuesday 13th February. Miss Dunk has included some information regarding this in this week’s Newsletter and permission notes were handed out to students on Wednesday at House Meetings. Please ensure you keep up to date with what’s happening in the school via the weekly Newsletter - copies of the Newsletter are uploaded to the school website if your child misplaces theirs. If you are on social media, I would also recommend “liking” the Cowra Public School Facebook page which also posts information updates, P&C Messages and lots of wonderful photos! Have a great week… Jenny Lewis
