PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

7 April 2016

Term 1, Week 11

Dear Parents As we come to the close of Term 1 I would like to congratulate all students for their outstanding achievements since the beginning of the year. It is wonderful to see the progress made by our students and especially our new students to the school in Kindergarten and others across the school. Last week we had a tremendous day on Friday with the Athletics Carnival being held in pre- organised perfect weather (well done Mrs Duncan). Many outstanding results were recorded on the day with several runners hitting their straps just at the right time and really pushing each other to the finish line. The field events were very exciting as well with many outstanding jumps and throws being witnessed. A “Great work” to the staff as well who worked tirelessly to make the day a success. I would like to mention the group of Cowra High School students who assisted in keeping everyone not only occupied if they were not competing at the time, but really enjoying the day with some fun and skill based novelty activities. Sure enough the Student/ Staff/ Parent race was a highlight of the day and although a strong protest has been lodged, the teachers can finally hold their heads up with a narrow win. Sure enough. The second runner for the teachers ran like Usain Bolt and was a relation of a staff member (or at least knew a staff member), but we will take the win. Thanks very much to the runners on the day especially some who Mr Tom dragged out of the crowd. Lastly I would like to congratulate Mrs Duncan on a great carnival and all the work she put towards the day. This week started with an Adventure Day for fifteen students who enjoyed a day with Mr Tom and Mrs Cole exploring the area near Mt Canobolas. The children were told they would get dirty and with some serious bushwalking, mountain climbing and caving, they certainly did. It is great to see children

NSW Department of Education and Communities having the experience to get into the bush and try something new. The confidence they develop from this day is evident straightaway. Tuesday was a Beary good day at Cowra Public School with the Bandage Bear picnic being held. The school showed great support for this worthwhile cause with $365.00 being raised. Hundreds of bears came to school in varying sizes and bandages and the children really enjoyed the chance to share their teddies with others. Yesterday Mr Garlick coached the Boys Cricket team in their first game and the boys did a great job. The game was close with the going down to a very competitive Grenfell team. Congratulations to the boys and to Mr Garlick on their efforts. Yesterday Mac Webster competed in the State swimming championships and registered a great time that improved on his own PB. Well done Mac. Lucy Scammell competed today and also did a cracking time to be very competitive in the Butterfly. We are very proud of our state representatives and recognise the work that goes into reaching this level. Also Wednesday was the commencement of the Riding for the Disabled for several of our students who go horse riding each Wednesday. Mrs Hopkins takes her class each week to the Cowra Showground, where qualified instructors teach the children a number of skills dealing with horses. This is one activity that has always been supported at Cowra Public School and I know the children who participate love the opportunity to gain skills and confidence. Over the last week the school has held two emergency practise drills that are required to be done a few times a year. It is wonderful to see the mature approach of the children during the drills, following the teachers instructions and moving without hesitation on request. Well done. Tomorrow, being the last day of term we are having our PBL afternoon where children are encouraged to bring in a game of their choice (either a electronic or board). All children who have not received a blue slip in the last five weeks will have a games afternoon. Children who have received a blue slip will also do activities with Mrs Beecher and Mrs Eldridge.

During the break, Anzac Day will be on Monday, 25 April and Cowra Public School will be attending and marching in the service commencing at 10.20am. Students are encouraged to represent the school wearing their full winter uniform and meeting at Brisbane Street at 10.15am then being collected at River Park by parents at the conclusion of the march. It is a great honour to march and a sign of respect to those men and women who gave their lives for our country. Early next term the school will find out if we have been successful in securing a spot in the School Spectacular in dance. This will be seen as the first step in attending this amazing event and only the first step. Other factors will include the logistics of accommodation and transport to the venue each day with the event being held at All Phones Arena for the first time. Another factor will be the cost for parents this year as at this point this is unknown due to the aforementioned factors. Lastly it is unknown as to the number of student places that will be allocated if successful. At this point Mrs Cobcroft and Mrs Duncan will be the sole selectors of the group. Next term school commences on Wednesday the 27th of April. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back to Term 2 and remind everyone of the uniform change to our winter uniform. Lastly I would like to wish Mr Ryan and Miss Nobes the best for their wedding over the weekend. I am sure it will be a wonderful day for them both and I know that the entire Cowra Public School community wish them every success for the day and their future together. I hope everyone enjoys the break and has a wonderful time with their family.

The Cowra Sub Branch of the Returned and Services League has invited our school captains to participate in the laying of a wreath at the Cenotaph on Anzac Day, Monday, 25 April at 10.20am (this is the last Monday of the school holidays). After the laying of the wreaths the school will be participating in the Anzac march. All school students are also encouraged to participate in the march, behind our Cowra Public School banner, to show respect for their school and the wider community commemorate Anzac Day.

On Tuesday this week the SRC held a Bandaged Bear Day in aid of Westmead Children’s Hospital.

Students should wear full school winter uniform and meet at the cenotaph at 10.10am. A permission note has been sent home and if you would like your child to attend the march, please fill the note in and return it to the school by Thursday, 7 April.

The students brought their favourite “BEARS” to school and held a picnic in the playground at recess time. The SRC raised over $350.00 towards this great cause. OUR FIRST DAY AT R.D.A. BY H123 Yesterday (Wednesday) we went horse riding. We went in Mrs Hopkins’ and Ms Kelly’s cars. All nine children went. Four children had been before and five children went for the first time. Everyone was really excited! Greg opened the farm gate. When we arrived we needed to get our helmets and boots on. Then all of the new children lined up to pat the horses. Honey felt furry and soft. We also brushed her and gave her some carrots. It really tickled when Honey took the carrots from our hands. Rhys, Jayden, Gregory and Shari hopped on the horses. They remembered horse riding from last year. It was great to be back! The new riders had a turn next. They were feeling a little bit scared but they loved it! Everyone is waiting to go riding again.! Thank you to all the workers at R.D.A.

ADVENTURE CLUB DAY On Monday, Mr Tom and Mrs Cole took sixteen students on an Adventure Day to Mount Canobolas, Mount Towac and the Pinncales. The children also experienced a walk behind the Federal Falls and an exciting exploration of the Borenore Caves. This Adventure Day is for students who displayed outstanding work ethics and strong attendance at school during Term 1. The students were well behaved and thoroughly enjoyed the day, especially exploring the dark and eerie caves with only a flash light.

Library News This week wraps up a busy term in the Library. Students have continued to borrow lots of books all term which makes Mrs Long and Mrs Oborn very happy. Kindy have made great progress this term on the computers. In the last two weeks we have progressed to using Word to practise typing and they are learning the function of important keys on the keyboard such as the space bar, back space and the enter key. Stage 1 students have been practising touch typing using a web site called BBC Type. The emphasis has been correct finger placement on the home row. You can find the website at www.bbc.co.uk/ guides/z3c6tfr for more practise at home. In Stage 2 and 3 we started the term using student email accounts. All students have an individual username and password, student portal and email address. These can both be accessed from home by going to www.dec.nsw.gov.au/.

Book Fair in Term 2! We will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair in Week 5 of Term 2. During the week-long book fair we will have a large selection of books and other items available for purchase in the Library. The school earns a commission based on our sales and we use this commission to put towards resources for the library. The holidays would be a great time for students to start doing some extra jobs around the house to earn some $$$ to put towards book fair!

We have spent a number of weeks discussing cybersafety. This is such a huge topic that we have tried to summarise it into some cyber safety golden rules to centre our discussion. This week students have commenced entering books on their online reading record for the Premiers Reading Challenge which can also be accessed through the student portal. In Term 2 computer lessons will continue at full steam. Next term we start to look at topics from the Health syllabus as the content for our technology lessons. Our first topic is emergency procedures. Last time we did this topic we discovered a significant number of students from Kindy to Year 6 did not know their address and phone numbers. It would be very beneficial if students could practise this during the holidays. Regards Sheridan Oborn and Trisha Long
