PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Term 2, Week 1

Dear Parents Welcome back to a very cold start to Term 2. With what could only be described as a blast of winter the term has started exceptionally well with all students returning ready to jump straight back into learning and fun. Our children look great in the winter uniform and well done to all of our mums and dads for having the children so well presented. Firstly I would like to share the wonderful news that Miss James has had a baby boy named Harry during the holiday break. Congratulations to Miss James and her partner on the arrival of their son. We welcome to the school Mr Chris Myles who will be replacing Miss James in the library. Mr Myles has a wealth of experience in schools and is not only a trained librarian but also very capable in IT and is a trained music teacher. This term the school will be involved in the NAPLAN assessment process with children in Years 3 and 5 completing a number of exams in Week 4. These tests are sat by all children across the country and are used as indicators on how the students are progressing in school. Also during the term the Cowra Public School children will be involved in the Cowra Eisteddfod. This wonderful program of events including dance, choir, band

23 April 2015

NSW Department of Education and Communities and verse is seen as another of the great opportunities that are provided here at the school. The students will be in readiness for the performances and we are sure the practice will definitely show. Yesterday the school commenced the annual bus talks provided by Mr Pat Charnock from Cowra Bus Services giving instruction to the children on safe practice whilst travelling on the bus. We thank Mr Charnock for his time in providing this services to the school. The school flew our flags at half mast on Wednesday in recognition of the loss of Stephanie Scott. Miss Scott grew up in Canowindra and has strong ties with the area. She will be sadly missed. Parents of Year 3 and 4 children are encouraged to move with haste to indicate if their child will be attending the Stage 2 excursion to the Blue Mountains. Having been on this excursion I can strongly recommend the value and worth of the activities the students participate in during the excursion and the enjoyment that the children have. A note was sent home from the school this week and all parents must indicate by next Friday at the latest. This Term our school will be moving into winter sports and as such, please ensure that your children wear warm clothing on sports days. As strong and tough as many of our boys feel they might be, we don’t want children catching a cold simply because they didn’t have enough clothes on. Further to this, can I strongly encourage all parents to label their child’s clothing. I appreciate that jumpers are expensive but without a name they are easily misplaced or picked up by mistake. This week Mrs Cole took delivery of a new electronic display board and over the next few weeks she will be introducing the students to the new technology. Also the school has secured (with the strong support of the P&C)

audio sound systems that are used by the class teacher to enable all children to hear teacher instructions clearly. The new technologies being introduced into our classrooms again demonstrates our commitment to providing our students the very best resources available in promoting educational success. We thank the P&C for their support and the school greatly appreciates their work. In relation to the P&C, the scheduled monthly meeting that was to be held tonight has been pushed back to a later date that will be advised. Today Mr Murray took a group of boys to the David Peachy Shield Gala day to play Rugby League. In what was a wonderful day of sport the boys all performed well and Mr Murray was very impressed with the sportsmanship and support our players showed each other on and off the field. Next week the school will be holding the first Adventure Day of the year as the time slipped past too quickly in Term 1. The children attending this activity day have displayed excellent attendance and outstanding work ethic in Term 1. Lastly I would like to again welcome everyone back to another very busy term.

Brad Tom

P&C Meeting Set down for tonight (Thursday 23 April) has been postponed until further notice.

AUSTRALIAN EARLY DEVELOPMENT CENSUS FOR KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS Playing the part in building a national picture of child health. In early 2015, our school along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the third Australian Early Development Census (AEDC). The AECD measures five key areas of development in children during their first year of full-time school to build a national picture of health and wellbeing. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and target support for children and families. Teachers are trained to assess each child and answer questions. Children don’t need to be present so no class time is missed, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. Teachers’ individual assessments are then analysed by the AEDC and reported as anonymous groups of children in the final report. Census results have helped communities to play new playgrounds and parental services; schools are seeing improved student performance through new literacy programmes; and governments are using the results as evidence to develop better policies for children. Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census. A note has gone home this week giving parent information about the AEDC. On the back of the note is a written opt-out option. If you do not wish your child to participate in the survey, please fill out the form and return it to the school.
