PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Term 2, Week 10

Dear Parents

NSW Department of Education and Communities

This week our school has certainly celebrated on a number of levels with the first being our NAIDOC activities. Our week of celebrations started last Friday at the Flag Raising that was held at Cowra Public School with numerous schools attending. This was followed by the commencement of our NAIDOC competitions held across the school. On Tuesday, Mr Albert Murray, Mr Dean Murray, Miss Ashleigh Elbourne, Aunty Gwen Murray and Aunty Frances Kennedy coordinated a bush tucker day with the cooking of Johnny Cakes and Emu and Kangaroo Sausages. Wednesday saw the children sit in wonder as both Albert and Dean Murray explained the use of Aboriginal artefacts to the classes. Thursday was a celebration of the NAIDOC 2016 message “Songlines, the story of our nation”, which was wonderfully depicted by our NAIDOC Public Speaking contestants. The teams of Mac and Tyahla followed by Jake and TahleePearl presented their speeches to the assembly and captured the audience’s attention with fantastic delivery and projection. Tomorrow the school is planning an interschool sports day against Mulyan but this will be subject to weather. The school would like to congratulate Jayden J Brown who came second in the PSSA District Golf Championships held yesterday. Jayden will now

amazing ladies on behalf of the school community and I wish them every happiness in the future.

Our week also marks very significant moments in time with the retirement of both Mrs Cole and Mrs Kilby. Both of these ladies have been cornerstones of Cowra Public School with Mrs Kilby having worked at Cowra Public School for forty one years. The significance of this can be calculated in the realisation that Mrs Kilby has taught approximately 1300 students in Cowra and considering Cowra has a population of approximately 10000, Mrs Kilby has most likely taught 1 in 10 people you meet.

Tomorrow will also be my last day at Cowra Public School and I can honestly say I have loved every minute of my time in Cowra. I have had the absolute pleasure to work with and lead an amazing, professional staff, that without doubt, promotes the best learning environment for the students in their care. I’m certain that the school will continue to move forward with such a dedicated team and I feel very satisfied that the current structure of the school will promote further success. I have enjoyed the friendships made with parents and community members during my time and I hope to stay in contact with the school, children and parents into the future.

Mrs Cole has also been working in Cowra for a very long time and has held a number of roles within the school. Mrs Cole has led the technology at Cowra Public School for numerous years and has been instrumental in making sure Cowra Public is leading the Cowra District in innovative programs involving technology. Mrs Cole has also been the Assistant Principal for the last seven years and in that time has supervised the learning programs of Stage 1 children as well as coordinating numerous areas of the school. Both of these ladies have raised their children in Cowra and are seen as fixtures of the Cowra Public School community and that of Cowra. Both ladies are looking forward to spending their retirement travelling and also enjoying their grandchildren. I would personally like to take the opportunity to thank these

Mr Wilkinson comes to Cowra Public School with a wealth of experience having led several schools and will no doubt bring his enthusiasm and passion for student improvement to the school. I wish Mr Wilkinson every success into the future and hope he enjoys Cowra Public as much as I have. Enjoy the holidays

SCHOOL SPECTACULAR 2016 23-26 November We are thrilled to announce that our school was successful in securing a place in the 2016 Schools Spectacular - “Dream Big”. We are again able to select dancers for the Combined Dance. This is an excellent opportunity for all involved. It is a huge commitment with time and expenses, as we will be required to be in Sydney over a 5 day period. There will be costume, accommodation and meal costs. We will secure funding from the school and also apply for community grants and donations to subsidise the costs but most of the costs will need to be covered by the families of each dancer. It is anticipated that this will be approximately $400 per student. The cost can be paid off like a layby system.

STAGE 3 CANBERRA EXCURSION Wednesday, 23rd to Friday, 25th November 2016.

Thank you to the 68 students who have chosen to participate in the excursion. Accommodation booking have now been made. Parents/care providers are reminded of the following:

 Cost is $270 per student, this amount has been subsidised by school funds and will be further reduced for those who took advantage of the pie drive.

 Payments can be made at any time using the Parent On-line Payment system or at the school office

The teachers, Mrs Cobcroft and Mrs Duncan will again be with the students in Sydney from the Wednesday through to the Sunday morning for rehearsals and the concerts. We invite parents to then attend the performances but your accommodation will be separate to the students. We have secured accommodation for the students and teachers at the Woolbroker at Darling Harbour. On the first night we will stay at the Great Southern Hotel, in George St, Sydney. Travel arrangements to the Schools Spectacular will be confirmed shortly. All students will need to be brought home after the Schools Spectacular with their families. The Schools Spectacular performance this year will be at Qudos Bank Arena in Homebush (previously know as ACER arena). To be performing in the same arena as many famous singers is an amazing lifelong memory your children will cherish forever. Debbie Cobcroft and Shavaughn Duncan

P&C WHY “DO” P & C? I volunteer at my child’s school. It is my local school. I find that giving up an hour or two each month to attend meetings where we as a group get to have a direct impact on my child’s learning is priceless. I appreciate the fundraising that the P & C Association needs to do to ensure that our children have access to educational materials and great facilities. I don’t mind lending a hand. It is the least that I can do every now and then. My children like that I am involved in their school life and they love it when they see me at the canteen or helping out at school community events. Yes, even the high school child gets a kick out of me participating— not that he/she would ever say that out loud or in front of their friends. I get to show them the good that people can bring to their community, I am giving them a model to aspire to, I am showing them that I value their education, that they are not alone. I am involved. These reasons may not interest you but I bet there is something for you at P & C. Our next meeting is on Wednesday, 27 July at 6.00pm and the P & C Association is looking for members of the community who are willing and able to represent and advocate for parents. Our school is a richer place for the contribution of parents and citizens. Join our P & C
