Cowra Public School NEWS 30 April 2015

Term 2, Week 2

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Dear Parents I would like to start this newsletter in recognising the outstanding representation of Cowra Public School students at the Anzac Day Service held on Saturday with 75 children representing the school. at what could only be described as a tremendous display of national pride and respect. Anzac Day was commemorated across the country with record numbers making time to recognise the service and sacrifice of our servicemen and women during war times. I greatly appreciate all parents who brought their children along and for their assistance before and after the march. The service was again heightened with the involvement of Mrs Hilton and we feel very lucky to have such a talented member from our school involved.

FOR YOUR DIARY MAY

NSW Department of Education and Communities This week the school has been very active in literacy and numeracy with all classes in full swing in lessons and the students working well across the school. We are very excited by the progress of students with some great improvements in student achievement becoming apparent. Mr Garlick held the Western Region Girls’ Soccer trials in Cowra on Wednesday with Jade Lanham and Courtney Wright trialling for the team. Both girls performed well with Courtney being selected to represent Western at the state championships later in the term We congratulate both girls for their efforts. Also on Wednesday the school hosted representatives of the Sydney Conservatorium which consisted of a string quartet as well as a flutist and a guitarist. These talented musicians performed for the children and also invited and incorporated our students into the presentation. As music is such a key component of the opportunities that we provide our students, it was great to see young performers who had mastered their skills. What really stood out was that all of the performing group had started learning or had been involved in their school band when they were younger.

A nail biting first half then emerged as the girls played Orange East drawing 3-3 at half time. The girls returned to the court with an excellent attitude and sense of teamwork to defeat Orange East 7-3 at full time. Last Thursday, Cowra Public School were involved in the annual David Peachey and Russell Richardson Rugby League Gala Day held at Cowra’s River Park. We had one Stage 2 team and one Stage 3 team, both competing in the competitive side of the competition. Cowra Public School Stage 3 team played three hard games of Rugby League for the day coming up against Mulyan 2, Canowindra and Mulyan 1 sides. This team had two losses and one draw and although were unsuccessful in gaining a semi final berth, performed admirably and displayed significant signs of improvement as the day wore on. Players to really shine for the Stage 3, CPS team were Harlee Simms, Joel Edgerton and Gary Cheng in attack, whilst in defence Dylan Presnell, Ronan Gailey and Kyle Murray tackled their hearts out. Glenn Saxby, Lewis McFarland, Blake Muntz and Memphis McKeown were also valued members of this team and tried their best all day. Cowra Public School Stage 2 team played five pool games against Mulyan 1, Forbes North, Mulyan 2, Canowindra Public and Canowindra St Edwards winning four of these five games. Their defeat came against a very skilled and experienced Mulyan 1 team. Having only lost the one game it was a deserving reward that the Cowra Public School team was successful in gaining a start in the grand final. Unfortunately, the team we had to play was the Mulyan 1 team and they proved that their win against us in the pool game was no fluke. Mulyan 1 won the grand final against Cowra Public School 6 tries to 3. Although Cowra Public School Stage 2 team was defeated in the grand final it was a huge effort by the boys to make it that far. The whole team played excellent footy displaying wonderful skills and courage, but the most satisfying result was the exceptional sportsmanship displayed by the boys. Trey Pollard, Jumyah Simpson, Jake Roberts and Mathew Kacarovski all scored numerous tries throughout the day showing speed and evasive skills that would make Greg Inglis proud. David Simms, Tallis Bell, Elijah Carter and Charlie Duclos tackled everything that moved and worked themselves to a stand still. Nikolai Paki and Aiden Lazanski, despite their size never took a backward step and really had the opposition guessing all day. Congratulations to all boys that played on the day. Your talents, sportsmanship and behaviour were an absolute credit to you and your families. Thank you to the NRL Development team for organising a fantastic day of Rugby League and the Cowra High School students for refereeing every single game. Albert Murray Coach

GIRLS’ WESTERN REGION SOCCER TRIALS Yesterday girls from all over the Central West tried out for the Western Region Girls’ Soccer team. Congratulations to Courtney Wright who was selected to compete in the Girls’ Western Region Soccer team.
