Dear Parents/Caregivers, This week students in Year 3 and 5 sat the National Assessments in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). These assessments give both parents and the school a ‘snapshot’ of where each child is sitting in areas of Literacy and Numeracy and is a valuable diagnostic tool for teachers. Congratulations to all our Year 3 and 5 students who participated this week – they all handled it with confidence and maturity! Results from NAPLAN will not be made available to parents or the school until September. Huge congratulations to the Infants and Primary school choirs who performed today at the Cowra Eisteddfod. There were a few nerves before our students took to the stage but all performed with great enthusiasm! Thank you to Mrs Long, Mrs Oborn and Mrs Pulling for their work in coaching this year’s choir groups. Thank you also to the large group of parents and supporters who came down to cheer on our students. Our next eisteddfod performance will be Stage 3 verse speaking and short skit on Tuesday 22nd May, Mirri and Budyabudya’s performance on Wednesday 23rd May, followed by our Dance groups in Week 5 and the Primary Band on the 6th June. Good luck to all our performers! Last week our Infants children enjoyed participating in the “Responsible Pet Ownership” program delivered by Katie Starr and her four-legged friend “Winnie”. All children enjoyed learning about how to care for their pets, what to do when you see a strange dog or animal, and of course the highlight of the session - getting to pat Winnie! Thank you to Katie for her engaging presentation and to Winnie who coped well with over a hundred pats! We look forward to welcoming them back again next year. On Friday students in Art Club went on a lunchtime excursion to visit the Cowra Art Gallery and view the Calleen exhibition. Mrs Cobcroft along with parents; Ms Beecher, Mrs Mansley, Mr McGill and Mrs Fagan, accompanied the students on this excursion and were very impressed by the interest the children showed in the artworks and their excellent behaviour. Art Club is on again this Friday during lunchtime and any students in Year 2-6 are welcome to attend. Coming up later this term Cowra Public School will be hosting “Operation Art” again, for any students with a keen passion and/or talent in art. “Operation Art”, is an initiative run by Westmead Children’s Hospital and the Department of Education Arts Unit where skilled artists come to the school to work with the children and share their expertise. If you would like your child to participate in Operation Art please find the information forms attached to this week’s Newsletter – please note there is a cost associated with this activity, registration must be completed online and places are limited. If you require further information, please contact Mrs Cobcroft at school. Yesterday Mrs McFarland and Mr Murray had their first visit to meet the pre-school children and their educators at Good Start Early Learning Centre. Next week Miss Causton and Mr Murray will head off to meet the children at Carinya followed by Yalbilinga and Nurture One as we aim to provide all Cowra families with information about our amazing school. At CPS we believe that ‘Every Day is Open Day’ and prospective parents are more than welcome to contact the office to arrange a personal tour and see what our school has to offer. Good luck to our Girls Hockey Team who will come up against Mulyan PS tomorrow in the first round of the PSSA Knockout! It should be a great game with both teams fielding some very skilled players. If you want to catch the action head on down to Edgell Park and cheer our girls on! The game starts at 10:15am….GO CPS!! Have a great week… Jenny Lewis Principal
