Dear Parents On Tuesday our Girls’ Dance Group performed at the Cowra Eisteddfod. Once again our students were exemplary representatives of our school achieving a Highl y Commended for th e i r performance. They must be applauded for their talent, commitment and behaviour. Our thanks also go to Hayley Barker and Mrs Cobcroft who assisted the girls in preparation for their performance. Our school band will also be representing the school at the Eisteddfod. We look forward to their performance on Wednesday, 4 June. Last Friday, the Boys’ and Girls’ soccer teams played in the first round of the PSSA Soccer Knockout Competition at Millthorpe. Whilst both teams were unsuccessful on the day they were to be

commended for their effort and sportsmanship. Miss James was proud of their performance and the way that they conducted themselves. Our thanks to the parents who once again provided additional transport enabling our students to participate in the competition. On Wednesday we also saw our public speakers represent the school at the CWA Public Speaking Competition in Bathurst. Many hours have gone into preparation for this event and the speeches were well prepared, entertaining and well presented. We appreciate the commitment of families who provided support, encouragement and transport to the event. Well done Hayley, Madeleine, Kimball and Krystal. Next week we look forward to the District Cross Country at Koorawatha on Monday, 2 June and Round 1 of the Westmount Shield Rugby League Competition to be held on Wednesday, 4 June at Orange High School oval. Whatever the results we know that our students will conduct themselves appropriately at all times. These activities highlight the range of opportunities that students have at Cowra Public School. None of the above activities would be possible without the commitment of staff and families. We are a fortunate school community to be able to draw on the talents and abilities of so many people in order to provide these extracurricular activities. A special thank you to Liz McKay for her work with the Girls’ Developmental

The lift to the library is in the final stages of completion with the focus now on clearing the worksites and revegetation of the areas. Whilst it has been a longer process than originally anticipated we are looking forward to being able to have our students access the library with greater ease. This week, as a component of the Positive Behaviour for Learning program, students will be creating murals in the school playground. On Wednesday, all infants children who had received a ticket decorated the infants playground with their chalk drawings. The primary students who have received tickets will demonstrate their artistic talents with their chalk drawings on the primary playground on Friday. Each week as the PBL team reviews the previous week’s events we are seeing the constructive results of the program throughout the school. It is also pleasing to see that our students gain recognition for their excellent behaviour. Whether we have visitors to the school or our students are on excursions, we regularly receive compliments on their conduct. Enjoy the week.

Brad Tom Principal

At last week’s assembly Mr Brad Tom, presented Captain Louise Beamish, from Cowra Salvation Army with a cheque for $251.00. This money was raised by the students during a “Red Day” held last Wednesday. There are pictures of the day on Page 3

PSSA BOYS’/GIRLS’ SOCCER Last Friday Cowra Public School Boys’ and Girls’ soccer teams travelled to Millthorpe to play in the first round of the PSSA Soccer Knockout Competition. Miss James and Mr Tom accompanied the teams. Unfortunately both teams lost their games. The boys team played really well and although they lost 5-0 the score didn’t reflect the effort put into the game by our boys. The girls also tried their hardest but eventually went down to Millthorpe 5-2. Everyone had an enjoyable day and both teams would like to thank Mr Tom and Miss James for a great day. Well done everyone and thanks to all the parents who drove to Millthorpe and supported both the teams. By Zoe Dunlop and Jayarna Pattinson-McGrath

WESTMOUNT SHIELD RUGBY LEAGUE KNOCKOUT COMPETITION Cowra Public School Open Rugby League Team Round 1 of the Westmount Shield Knockout Cowra v’s Calare Public School at Orange High School Oval Wednesday, 4 June 2014 The match will take place Wednesday, 4 June at Orange High School Oval, starting at 10.30am. We will return in time for afternoon buses. At the conclusion of the Cowra Public School v’s Calare Public School match, the winner will then play Bletchington Public School. There will be a rest period of about 30 minutes before this game begins. We are currently three weeks behind the draw and need to catch up to the rest of the region. Travel to and from Orange will be by private car, leaving Cowra Public School at 8.30am. (If we don’t have sufficient transport we will have to forfeit the carnival.) To assist with costs involved, team members travelling in a car other than that driven by their parent, will be asked to pay $5 to the driver of the car. Guernseys will be supplied by the school but children must supply all other necessary gear including mouth guards and head gear (if worn). While every effort is made by the school to minimise the possibility of injury, please understand that there will remain some degree of risk inherent in participation in what is essentially a body contact sport. It is strongly recommended that your child wear a correctly fitted mouthguard at all times whilst playing Rugby League and the school encourages the wearing of head gear primarily to protect the ears and head against abrasions. Mr Albert Murray will be accompanying the team to Orange.

COMMUNITY COWRA SCOUTS Cowra Scouts is in desperate need of new leaders. If no one comes forward, the club, which has been operating in Cowra for 90 years, will have to close. Unfortunately, the Cubs have already done so due to the resignation of their only leader and with only a handful of Scouts registered, their section will not be able to continue either. If you have experienced the enjoyment of being a Scout in the past, please put your hand up to help the next generation and get us to our 100th milestone.
