Dear Parents/Caregivers, It’s hard to believe we are at the half-way point in the Term! So much has happened over the past five weeks and looking forward, there is still plenty left on the calender for the remainder of Term 2! The Cowra Eisteddfod has continued this week with our three Dance groups taking to the stage on Tuesday afternoon. Each group has spent many hours rehearsing during lunchtime dance sessions with Miss Barker and did a fantastic job on the day Congratulations to our “Come Alive” group who came in 1st place, our Hip Hop Boys group “Game On”, who were placed 2nd and our huge “Red Balloon” girls group who received a Highly Commended! A big thank you to Mrs Cobcroft for all her work in organising our dance groups and the amazing costumes and to Miss Hayley Barker and Miss Sarah Marriott for their outstanding choreography! Thanks also to Ms James, Mrs Johnson, Mrs Heilman and Mrs Casey who were terrific backstage “Dance Mums” looking after all of our 76 dancers! On the sporting field this week we congratulate our 11 students - Jock, Daniel, Phillip, Jett, Oliver, Brody, Jake, Jemima, Janet, Ella and Twylla - who were successful in progressing to the Western Region Cross Country carnival following the District carnival which was held last Friday. Special congratulations to Ella Kilby and Janet Cheng who placed first in their respective age divisions! Well done to our Open Rugby League Team who played a tough game against West Wyalong Public School and were defeated 22-4 in the PSSA Knockout on Monday and to our Stage 2 and Stage 3 Netball teams who participated in the Netball School’s Cup on Wednesday. Twenty of our dancers also headed to the Western Dance Camp Workshop at Cowra High School last Friday and enjoyed learning new skills and routines from a variety of guest choreographers. I am so proud of the excellent sportsmanship, positive attitude and sense of fair play our CPS students show both on and off the sporting field. On Tuesday we were thrilled to welcome the Prime 7 News Team to Cowra Public School to film a special story about our Wiradjuri language program taught by Mr Murray and Aunty Esther. The children in Mrs White’s Kindergarten Bugbug class enjoyed meeting journalists Mel and Shannon and cameraman Neil and were very excited to see the special equipment that the cameraman used. Several students, Mr Murray and Aunty Esther were interviewed about our language program and Prime 7 will contact the school to let us know when the story will be screened. As soon as we know we will put the date on our Facebook page. We are all so excited to see our Kindergarten superstars on TV! Thank you to all students and staff who dressed in red and brought in a gold coin for the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal! Our school raised a total of $408 which will be donated to the Salvo’s to assist families in need this winter. How wonderful to see our students giving back to our local community. Yesterday Kindergarten and Stage One students participated in the STANSW Young Scientist Paper Plane State Championships as part of our STEM program taught by Mr Vogel. Students were charged with the task of making their own paper plane and seeing how far they could make it fly. Plane designs were carefully planned, tested, re-designed and modified in readiness for the big fly-off! Stage 2 and Stage 3 will have their fly-offs in the coming weeks…who knows, we may have a future State champion in our midst! Our Athletics Carnival is fast approaching and students are getting excited about this annual event. House Meetings were held this morning and war cries could be heard all over the school! We invite all families to come along to Twigg Oval next Friday 6th June and be a spectator at our carnival. Fingers crossed for fine weather! Please note that the school assembly scheduled for Week 6 will be postponed until Friday Week 7 due to the athletics carnival. Have a great week… Jenny Lewis Principal

Paper Plane Challenge - Infants "FLY-OFF" Yesterday afternoon we had our first 'fly-off' of the paper plane competition in the school hall. Large numbers in each year eagerly got busily when the paper was handed out, folding their own special design hoping to get a good flight distance. They lined up at the edge of the stage and launched their craft into the air - some took off well, looped and came back, others did a nose dive, some made spectacular turns heading in the wrong direction and then a few flew on to achieve 'wow' and 'yay' cheers from the crowd. Although nobody came near the qualifying distance of 12 metres, we still had a lot of fun and can congratulate the year winners who will get the chance to compete again next term for the school finals: Kinder 1st: Carter Pemberton 2nd: Lexi Haensch 3rd: Leslie Drage

6.70m 4.35m 4.00m

Year 1 1st: Lynk Cheng 2nd: Scarlett Berry 3rd: Chloe Boyce 4th: Kitty Pollard

6.85m 6.65m 6.13m 5.55m - with a very long flight time

Year 2 1st: Keenen Murray 2nd: Thomas Dening 3rd: Joshua Morrison 4th: Indianna Pund-McGuiness 5th: Sven Taylor

9.07m 8.70m 7.65m 7.50m 7.29m

We look forward to the Stage 2 "Fly-Off' next Wednesday afternoon (6th) at 14.00 in the hall. Regards Chief Vogel STEM Teacher K-6

COWRA PUPLIC SCHOOL PAPER PLANE CHAMPION? STEM Initiative: NSW Young Scientist Paper Plane State Championship We are looking to enter our best students in each year for the state competition in August. Next week Wednesday afternoon 30 May 2018 from 14.00 15.00 we will hold the "fly-off" for Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 students who think they can make the best paper plane that flies the furthest or stays in the air the longest. Year 3 and Year 4 will have their "fly off" on Wednesday 6 June, and Year 5 and Year 6 will have their "fly-off" on Wednesday 13 June. So dads, mums, brothers, sisters, grandparents help your Cowra Public student to learn to fold the best paper plane from your secret design and see if they can become the school age champion. Please see below the details and rules.

GENERAL RULES

PBL Acknowledgement Afternoon Friday 1 June, 2-3pm BYO Electronic devices As part of PBL, we hold special celebrations approximately twice a term to acknowledge student’s efforts to be on task, safe and respectful. The PBL committee has consulted with the Student Representative Council to plan activities for the rest of the year that are valued by the students. You may have noticed on the back wall of the auditorium some large wooden stars. Students earn PBL acknowledgments by trading their tickets for coloured stickers, and when the nominated star is full, the students receive the acknowledgement. The exciting news is we have now filled up our first PBL star for Term 2 with positive behaviour stickers contributed from all classes and all students will participate in an "electronics afternoon" this Friday 1st June from 23pm! Students are allowed to bring their own electronic devices or non-electronic games to play and share with their classmates. Teachers will provide a safe place to store any devices throughout the day. Well done to all CPS students on their safe, respectful and on task behaviour!

Paper planes must be made on the day with provided paper (A4, under 100GSM). Only one piece of paper per plane may be used. There will be two categories: Distance & Airtime. Students may compete in one or both categories. Only current Primary School or Secondary School students are allowed to compete. There is an ‘OPEN’ category for parents and siblings wishing to compete. See the Competition Day schedule for timing. There will be 6 age/year groups for each category. See below for age/grade groups. In both Preliminary rounds and Finals, each student will get 2 throws. Students may use the same plane for each throw or construct a new plane for the second throw. Each Distance throw must land within the marked competition area. Students must not overstep the marked ‘throwing line/mark’, if a thrower steps over the line the throw will not be counted or measured. Distance will be measured in a straight line from the throwing mark to where the plane first hits the ground or an object (whichever first). Time will be measured from the moment the plane leaves the hand to when it hits the ground or an object (whichever first). Cheating or tampering with paper will warrant immediate disqualification.
