Cowra Public School NEWS 21 May 2015

Term 2, Week 5

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Dear Parents Another great week at Cowra Public School with success in the Cowra Eisteddfod in both the Junior and Senior Choirs as well as the Stage 3 Verse Speaking. The school also received a highly commended placing for the performance by our E2-3 and H1-2 classes. Having the opportunity to go along and watch the talents of the children and the direction of the staff working with them has been a real delight. I congratulate Mrs Hilton for her efforts in achieving the highest Choir score from the Eisteddfod with the Senior Choir and being awarded the Cowra Eisteddfod overall trophy having been up against many quality choirs from several high schools in the region. Our school was also awarded the top overall school to perform at the Eisteddfod for 2015 and we congratulate all students and staff involved. This week the students have again been working well in all class subject areas and the teachers have started to collate results from assessment tests ready for the half year reports. The children have shown great progress during the first part of the year and are enjoying the rewards of excellent attendance and consistent effort. Often I remind the students that I expect them at school every single day of the school year.

CONTACTING THE SCHOOL Administration Office Hours:

Many students have been putting in enormous efforts to achieve this with close to 60 of the students having a 100% attendance rate. Further to this, another huge group of over 60 have only had one day away to this point. I congratulate the children and the parents for driving forward wi t h t hi s exc el l ent a t te nd ance achievement. This week we celebrate the Kindergarten Students of the Month and I congratulate Xanthe Osborne, Oscar McGill and Bella Graham. Great work by these three champion students. At this time of year we start to organise the excursions for Stage 2 and Stage 3 that involve overnight stays. Information regarding payment and activities are in this newsletter and I encourage all parents to look at and use the payment scheme to spread the cost out over a longer period rather than leave it right to the end. We are also gearing up for the next big thing at our school being the Talent Quest, to be held in the last week of the term. This is always a great event with a lot of laughter and enjoyment had by the performers and the audience. Auditions will start soon so children should be organising their acts. Today we were proud to have our school leaders participate in a GRIP Leadership Day being held in Bathurst. Ms Eldridge accompanied the children and by all accounts everyone had a very enjoyable and insightful time.

8.30am - 3.30pm

School commences at 9.10am School finishes at 3.15pm Students are not supervised before 8.45am

Tomorrow the school will be involved with the District Cross Country at Canowindra. Mr Duncombe and Mrs Duncan will be coordinating our children into their race events and we wish all of our 50 runners the best of luck. Parents are advised that this is a private transport event and children will need appropriate warm clothing in case the weather is cold. School sports uniform is to be worn on the day. Please ensure you provide your child with water and a school hat. Lastly we ask parents that have children who suffer from asthma to provide appropriate medication (puffer) for their child.

Tonight the school will be holding the first P&C meeting of the term and I encourage everyone to come along. On the agenda are plans for extensive garden upgrades in the school and IT purchases for classrooms. The meeting is held at 6.00pm in the staffroom and usually goes for one hour. Next week we will be sending the CWA Public Speakers to Orange to compete in the CWA finals for Western Region. In a family affair, we will be represented by Mac and Niamh Webster in Years 5 and 3, then Maddie and Eliza Mulligan in Years 6 and 4. We wish our public speakers the best of luck. Also next week the school will be sending the Dance Ensemble to the Eisteddfod with Mrs Cobcroft and Mrs Duncan. The children have put in a huge effort learning their routines and we are sure to see their best on Tuesday. I will be away from the school over the next few days at several Principal events including Legal courses and Department of Education Advanced Policy Development. The school will have Mrs Macnamara and Ms Eldridge sitting in the Principal’s chair during my absence, so please feel free to speak to these ladies. Enjoy the week.

PRIMARY EISTEDDFOD REPORT The Cowra Public School Primary Choir performed with distinction at the Cowra Eisteddfod on Tuesday of Week 5. The adjudicator was very complimentary of the work done by the choir. She praised the enunciation, intonation, precision and the discipline of the Senior Choir in awarding them 1st place in their section. The Senior Choir then went on to win the 2GZ trophy for the choir which gained the highest marks out of Infants, Primary, Small Schools, 20 Voice Choirs, Central and High Schools at the Eisteddfod. This is the 2nd year running for winning this trophy and it was a thrill for all of the hard working pupils. Together, the Infants and Senior Choirs also won the Mary Sheahan Trophy for the most successful school competing at the Eisteddfod, again for the second time running. Mrs Hilton would like to thank the children for their hard work, the parents for their support with uniforms, and the beautiful presentation of the children and the teachers who are always so helpful in catering for the rest of the children during rehearsal times.

STAGE 3 VERSE SPEAKING CHOIR

BOOK CLUB

On Tuesday of this week, the Cowra Public School Stage 3 Verse Speaking Choir competed at the Cowra Eisteddfod. The adjudicator was amazed at the performance and highly praised the timing, vocal variations, attention and skills of this Choir. The Choir won 1st place with a very high 94 points, making them the highest scoring Verse Speaking Group at the Eisteddfod. The rain made our morning quite exciting and added another dimension to the children’s experiences at the Eisteddfod.

The fourth issue of Ashton Scholastic Book Club for 2015 was sent home this week.

Mrs Hilton again would like to thank the children for their dedicated work over such a short period of time, and the parents for their help in assuring that their children, as always, stood out as the best dressed group at the Eisteddfod.

INFANTS EISTEDDFOD CHOIR Last Friday the Infants Choir had the privilege of performing for Cowra Eisteddfod. The Eisteddfod is a wonderful opportunity to gain performance experience and share the joy of singing with an audience. They sang two contrasting songs, The Rainbow Snake and The Quartermaster's Store. Whilst the competitive field was small (we were the only entrants), it was a well deserved win and the children are to be commended for the commitment to rehearsals and their performance on the day. Our thanks to Mrs Wright who brings her talent to our rehearsals and performance as well as Mrs Williams and Mrs Sharkey who accompanied us on the day. My thanks in particular to the staff who support the choir and enable the students to have time to rehearse. Our thanks also to all the parents who provide encouragement and assistance on the day. My congratulations to all the students. Kerry Cole Choir teacher

E2-3 & H1-2 EISTEDDFOD REPORT On Tuesday, 20 May, H1-2 and E2-3 headed off to the Cowra Civic Centre. We were all feeling a little nervous even to the point of one or two actually feeling sick! We all wondered how we would perform and just what it would feel like standing and perform under hot lights in front of an audience. We had put in the practise and knew our lines. In fact “The Three Little Pigs Rap had been in our minds for at least nine weeks if you include the holidays! Our costumes included baseball caps, sunglasses, jeans or track pants and joggers. We were awarded second prize on the day and truly thought that our performance reflected some of our very best practises. We have a nice trophy and also a cash prize that we might put toward an excursion at the end of the year. Special thanks to Mrs Ross for making the props and Ms Eldridge for encouraging us along the way and to all the children who performed so well. Mrs Hopkins

SRC NEPAL APPEAL Yesterday the school held a Mufti Day to raise funds for the Nepal Appeal. The students and staff raised over $500.00 for the cause. Well done everyone!

Last Friday, Cowra Public School Rugby League team travelled to Canowindra to take on Canowindra Public in the first round of the NSW PSSA Westmont Shield Knockout. In a very even contest the Canowindra boys proved just a little too strong running out winners 22-20. Cowra Public played very well and were leading Canowindra 20-18 with only seconds left on the clock, but a lucky bounce from a well diverted kick saw Canowindra snatch victory right on the full time whistle. Cowra Public were best served by Kyle Murray who scored two great tries, Blake Muntz who never took a backward step and Joel Edgerton who tackled his heart out. Other strong performers were our Stage 2 boys, Trey Pollard, Jake Roberts, Mathew Kacarovski, David Simms, Aiden Lazanski, Jumyah Simpson and Tyreece Simpson. These boys played against much bigger and older opponents and really held their own. Dylan Presnell, Gary Cheng, Memphis McKeown, Glenn Saxby, Harlee Simms and Ronan Gailey all tried their very best.

Skipping at school. No cost. Putting together team based routines to music and learning new skipping skills. Need hat, drink.

A huge thank you to the parents who assisted with travel to Canowindra and also to Mrs Kacarovski by generously volunteering to wash the jerseys. Thank you!

P&C CANTEEN ASSISTANCE The P&C Association run our school’s canteen and offer an affordable and healthy service to students and staff. All profits made in our canteen are spent on projects within our school. Our canteen manger, Lisa Willis desperately needs volunteers to assist in running the canteen this year. Please consider spending one day a month or term volunteering. It is a great way to keep in touch with your children and their friends. Volunteer assistance is needed from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. daily OR perhaps 9.00am until 11.00am to make the lunches. If you could assist, please ring the school or see Lisa in the canteen. If the canteen could get more assistance healthier food could be delivered to the children. The canteen menu is attached to this newsletter. WE CAN’T RUN OUR CANTEEN WITHOUT YOUR HELP!
