PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
NSW Department of Education and Communities the next level and we congratulate all of our representative runners.
Dear Parents Having had a few days away from the school whilst being at courses, it was wonderful to come back today to find everything moving steadily. I thank Ms Eldridge and Mrs Macnamara for relieving in the Principal position and the entire staff who keep our school on track. Last week the Cross Country runners took on the challenge of the District level at Canowindra with several of our students qualifying for Western Region to be held in Geurie on Wednesday, 10 June. Stand out performances in the 10’s, 11’s and 12 Year Girls group were seen with Cowra Public picking up the win by having Beryl Brown, Ella Meeuwisse and Bella Scammell winning their age sections. Our school was represented at a GRIP leadership day on Thursday with the captains and vice captains enjoying the day in Bathurst at the conference. The children were exposed to a number of high profile speakers who inspired thought towards reaching for their goals and directing their focus on achieving what they want. A thank you to Ms Eldridge for accompanying the children. I would like to thank the parent response to our Stage 3 fundraiser Pie Drive last week. Over 1000 pies were purchased and delivered last week in what was a huge operation. Thank you to those parents and staff who coordinated on the day. The P&C met on Thursday night. Consideration of the purchase of more Ipads being put forward. Also a review of the garden plans at the school were discussed with some exciting developments in the wings. The next P&C will be held on Thursday, 18 June. This week the Dance group performed at the Cowra Eisteddfod with a second place with a further gaining highly commended being awarded to our talented students. The children in our dance ensemble have been practicing tirelessly and we thank Mrs Cobcroft, Mrs Duncan and Hayley Barker (Dance teacher) for their efforts with the group. Later in the term a group of dancers will be performing in Bathurst and no doubt will carry the Cowra Public School banner high. Also this week we had four students travel to Orange to participate in the regional CWA Public Speaking finals. Mac and Niamh Webster joined Maddie and Eliza Mulligan in the finals with all children performing extremely well. A big thankyou goes to the parents and grandparents who made the trip across
to Orange. Next week the Band will be playing at the Cowra Eisteddfod and we are expecting a great performance. Learning and playing an instrument is not easy and I commend the students for their ongoing effort to master their instruments and persist with their training. An enormous thank you to Mary Ann Wright for her extreme patience and drive to direct the band towards improvement. On a non- school related matter, I really don’t know what is worse, losing by one point or simply losing to Queensland. Like many I sat and watched the football and cheered the ‘BLUES’ on and was more than a little disappointed with the score, but full credit for the defence shown. I have threatened detention for students supporting the Queensland team and hope that our team can turn it around for the next game. Enjoy the week.

‘BLITZ ON NITS’ Following an outbreak of head lice, the school is recommending that each child be thoroughly examined and treated at home. Please find below a summary guide of how to identify, treat and break the head lice cycle. 1.
Identification: Check your child’s hair for live lice and either yellowish white eggs (live nits) or brown or black eggs (dead nits). Hatched eggs are white and flat, like grains of salt or dandruff.
2.
Treatment: Consult your pharmacist about which product is best suited for your child. Re-treatment should be carried out about 7 days after the first treatment to kill any juvenile lice that may have hatched since the first treatment.
3.
Elimination: Remove eggs and lice by using a fine-tooth comb and conditioner, egg remover or combing solution.
4.
Prevention: Wash all bed linen and clothes, including hats thoroughly in warm water and detergent. It is also a good to thoroughly iron hats and pillow cases.
Facts about head lice:
Head lice are parasites that suck blood and live exclusively on humans.
Head lice don’t hop or fly, 95% of lice are transmitted by close contact.
Don’t share hats, headbands, pillows brushes and combs.
Especially common among school children between the ages of 3-12 years.
Head lice don’t like short or plaited hair.
Girls have more chance of infestation because of their long, loose hair. (Perhaps plaiting hair is a good option.)
Items that come in contact with an infested person (i.e. hair brushes, bands, ribbons, hats) must be washed in hot water with detergent then sun dried.
STAGE 3 EXCURSION TO NARRABEEN As their major excursion for the year, students in Stage 3 will be given the opportunity of attending the New South Wales Academy of Sport at Narrabeen. Accommodation is dormitory-style, all equipment is provided, and instruction in all activities is given by fully-trained Academy staff. The school has a booking from Monday, 16th November until Friday, 20th November 2015. The group, accompanied by school staff, will leave Cowra on the Monday morning at 6am and return the following Friday at 10pm. Travel will be by CountryLink bus to Lithgow, train to Sydney’s Central Station, ferry to Manly and bus to Narrabeen. The cost will be $390. A deposit of $90 is required by Thursday, 18th June 2015. While a special mention goes to assistant coach Cailin McKay.

Our canteen manger, Lisa Willis desperately needs volunteers to assist in running the canteen this year. Please consider spending one day a month or term volunteering. It is a great way to keep in touch with your children and their friends. Volunteer assistance is needed from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. daily OR perhaps 9.00am until 11.00am to make the lunches. If you could assist, please ring the school or see Lisa in the canteen. If the canteen could get more assistance healthier food could be delivered to the children. WE CAN’T RUN OUR CANTEEN WITHOUT YOUR HELP!
CLOTHING POOL The Clothing Pool will now be open every morning from 8.40am until 9.10am and every Tuesday all day. If you would like to view or buy clothing from the Clothing Pool please go to the canteen on the above times and day. The Clothing Pool will NOT be selling privately owned clothes anymore. If you have any clothes left in the pool please arrange to have them collected. P & C will consider this as a donation to the school. Cindy Saxby ~ Clothing Pool Coordinator
Last Friday, Mr Albert Murray and Mr Dean Murray took a group of students from Cowra Public, Mulyan Public and Cowra High School to watch the South Sydney Rabbitohs play the Parramatta Eels. Luckily Albert went out early on Friday morning and bought ponchos for all the boys as the weather turned out to be atrocious. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the day and it was a wonderful experience for them. Yesterday students wore red scarves and red items to help raise funds for the Salvation Red Shield Appeal. Students brought in a gold coin donation and these were placed in the turtle drawing in the Infants playground. The students raised $130 dollars toward the appeal. Well done to all involved.
