Cowra Public School NEWS 18 June 2015
Term 2, Week 9
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
NSW Department of Education and Communities
Dear Parents This week the school has enjoyed a relative quiet period with very few events happening outside of our school environment. It is rare for our school to have a full week without having children representing in sport, music or dance. However this does not mean that our week has been unproductive. In addition to completing lessons in Maths and English as well as enjoying activities such as art and music in most classes, the children have been completing lessons based on the PBL model. Each week the school focuses on one expectation and this is taught in each class throughout the school. This is to ensure that every student

is given the same information and that each staff member reaffirms their knowledge of our standards. This process enables the school to function with very few disruptions due to poor choice of behaviour by students. This week we were joined by four new students at our school and we welcome the girls to our learning environment. One event that was held at the school this week was the NAIDOC Public Speaking Challenge. Our school had four students compete with other schools from across the Lachlan group of schools with Tyahla Munro and Anja Gower being awarded with first place. They will now compete in Dubbo later in the year at the Region Final. Niamh Webster and Tahlee-Pearl Beckett who are in Stage 2 also need a strong mention for their efforts and high standard of delivery on the day. A big thank you to Mrs Montgomery for assisting the children in preparing for the day. Next week the school will be celebrating NAIDOC Week and will be having all Aboriginal students attending a flag raising ceremony at Cowra High School on Monday, 22 June. Following this the school will be holding a Rugby League Coaching day on Friday, 26 June for Stage 3 whilst Stage 2 will be attending a NAIDOC concert at Cowra High School followed by activities and TIG games. All children at events will return to school prior to the end of the day. Next term the school will also be involved in a very
exciting program involving a Corroboree being held at the Corridor Project with more information coming soon. Tonight we will be holding the monthly P&C meeting and welcome any parent or community member to attend. The meeting starts at 6pm in the staffroom. Tomorrow, the Athletics Carnival was scheduled, but due to the poor weather we have experienced, it has been rescheduled to July 17, the first Friday back next term. Please be aware that school will be operating as normal tomorrow. Next week will be the last week of school prior to the school holidays. School reports will be going home next week and we encourage parents to feel free to make an appointment through the office if they would like to discuss their child’s report with the class teacher or myself. I have been highly impressed with the progress and growth shown by the students across the school, with many students making significant gains in the levels of their achievement. Enjoy the week.

The first game we played was against Orange Small Schools. We played a tough game against some stiff competition! We lost the game 3-0 but displayed great sportsmanship and skill. This loss meant that we were out of the competition, but we still got to play two more friendly games. The next game was against Orange Public School. We started with a bang, scoring two great goals by Maddy and Nashwa. In the final twenty seconds the score was 2-2 until with five seconds to go the opposite team scored !!! By the third game we were all eager for victory. We played Lithgow Public School in what was a nail biting game. The game started with Lithgow scoring the first goal. Then “Miss Golden Boots”, Maddy Mulligan placed in two well executed goals. Jade Lanham also scored a goal from almost half way. The Lithgow side also scored a goal before extra time but Cowra came away the winners. The team was over the moon with the victory. A special mention must go to Emma Mulligan, Donna Wright, Rohan McKay, Carol Spry and Kylie Lanham. Also a huge thank you to Mr Garlick for coaching the team. P&C CANTEEN ASSISTANCE The P&C Association run our school’s canteen and offer an affordable and healthy service to students and staff. All profits made in our canteen are spent on projects within our school. Our canteen manger, Lisa Willis desperately needs volunteers to assist in running the canteen this year. Please consider spending one day a month or term volunteering. It is a great way to keep in touch with your children and their friends. Volunteer assistance is needed from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. daily OR perhaps 9.00am until 11.00am to make the lunches. If you could assist, please ring the school or see Lisa in the canteen. If the canteen could get more assistance healthier food could be delivered to the children. WE CAN’T RUN OUR CANTEEN WITHOUT YOUR HELP!
