Cowra Public School NEWS PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
NSW Department of Education
Dear Parents Another busy week at the school with the Athletics Carnival starting proceedings with our children performing exceptionally well in their respective running and field events. Our school age champions were announced today with many close battles for overall points between several children. Congratulations to Mrs Duncan for selecting the best day of winter to slot the event into and again to all our staff and volunteers for their assistance on the day, including several high school students. At school the children have been working hard in class but also spending time in rehearsal for the school showcase which is happening next week on Wednesday and Thursday evenings (as well as Wednesday as a matinee performance). This showcase of Cowra public schools is highlighting the extraordinary talent we have at our schools and the promotion of the programs on offer in the public schools of the Cowra and Canowindra areas. Parents are invited to these evenings to enjoy the performances and tickets for the events can be purchased at the school. Please do not hesitate in securing your ticket as over 8 schools are involved in the concert with many parents and relatives coming to witness the spectacle. Last Sunday I had the pleasure of enjoying the wonderful weather whilst at the Cowra Public School P&C’s Working Bee. I was blown away with the support of parents, teachers and students on the day. Trees were planted, woodchip was spread and irrigation pipe was laid in what was a tremendous morning. A huge thank you to everyone involved on the day and congratulations to the P&C for the outstanding work completed. The school looks amazing and the new garden area will be of huge benefit to the school and children for years to come. Another new addition to the school is the arrival and installation of our new electronic school sign. This sign is located in the same position as the previous sign and has the capability of presenting up to 5 messages within a period of 1 minute. The sign can be changed instantly from the office and we hope to inform parents

Tonight the school will be holding the monthly P&C meeting in the staffroom starting at 6pm. We will have in attendance Mr Charles Gauci, (Cowra High School Principal) who will be speaking on the academic streaming of children in Year 7 in 2016 and the development of a gifted and talented class which is being set up for next year. All parents of children in Year 6 are welcome to come along to the meeting to listen and discuss the proposal. Now one for the ladies. The P&C will be co-hosting with Carla from In Style for Women, a wonderful afternoon on Saturday 25 July (this Saturday). The event will involve a fashion parade and sale of quality fashion items starting at 1.30pm at the Bunker (il Campanile di Cowra). The afternoon promises to be a lot of fun with several mums from our school being encouraged to model a range of new release clothing that will be available at incredibly reduced prices on the day. Carla will be donating a large percentage of sales back to the school and we encourage all ladies to
take the opportunity to have a great afternoon that will no doubt be filled with a lot of laughter. Don’t be scared to drag your husband along if only to hold the bags and bring the cheque book as no doubt they would be lost with an afternoon to themselves. The P&C will be catering on the day in the form of an afternoon tea. The afternoon has a $10 cost with several lucky door prizes and giveaways during the afternoon. Next week is Education Week and we are celebrating with the above mentioned showcase on Wednesday and Thursday at the Civic Centre. In addition we are welcoming parents to the school on Thursday, 30 July starting with Infants open classrooms at 10.30am, followed by morning tea at 11.00am. Pedlar’s Parade begins at 11.30am and Primary open classrooms at 12.30pm. We hope all parents take the opportunity to come along to these great events and enjoy time in the school. Bradley Tom

The program will close on Tuesday, 8 September when all the completed sticker cards are counted and returned to Woolworths. The points collected will be redeemed on resources and equipment.

LACHLAN VALLEY LEARNING GROUP EDUCATION WEEK CONCERT Over the past two terms Principals and staff from schools in Cowra, Canowindra and surrounding districts have been meeting regularly to discuss the formation of the group called Lachlan Valley Learning Community. This group of public schools has joined together to emphasise and highlight the importance and strength of public schools and the power of a Kindergarten to Year 12 education within this area. The group has been looking at ways that each school complements each other as well as how we can recognise the diversity we have within our school communities. To celebrate the launch of the Lachlan Valley Learning Community this year, as part of Education Week celebration, a grand concert and art display will be held. The concert will take place on Wednesday, 29 July and Thursday, 30 July. The official launch will take place in the Theatrette of the Cowra Civic Centre on Wednesday, 29 July commencing at 6.00pm followed by a concert at 7.00pm featuring students from all schools and then a second performance will be held on Thursday, 30 July. The Art Show will be held in the Cowra Library and it run from the 28th July until 28th August. Tickets for the concerts are available from all schools and will be $10.00 per adult, $5.00 per student and $20.00 per family. Seats will be strictly limited due to the size of the Civic Centre. All proceeds from the concert will be donated to Careflight and Stewart House. As well as all these events, a new logo has been developed to draw together the elements of our districts. The blue outline symbolise the two rivers - Lachlan and Belubula, the green hills, valley and fertile plains of our area and the rising sun to signify the light that comes through the power of education. The Education Week Concert will be held in Term 3, Week 3. The concert will be held at the Cowra Civic Centre. Dates for the concert: Tuesday 28 July

NSW STATE MUSIC CAMP Last week we (Madeleine Mulligan and Isabella Scammell) went to the NSW State Music Camp at Narrabeen Academy of Sport. We were there for a week and had a fabulous time. At the camp, as our first choice of elective, we participated in the vocal ensemble. There was also; an orchestra, a wind ensemble, a brass ensemble, and a stage band. As our second choice, we took part in musical theatre, which was amazing. We also took part in recreational activities like archery and rock climbing. During the camp we learnt many different singing techniques and made lots of friends. At the end of the week, we took part in a big camp concert with everyone performing for their parents. The finale was a massed choir, with everyone in the camp singing apart from a few orchestra players. This was incredible! We both had a fabulous time and hope more people from Cowra will be able to join the camp next year. Madeleine Mulligan and Isabella Scammell

PREMIER’S SPORTING CHALLENGE All Cowra Public School students will be participating in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge this term. The Challenge is a great opportunity for children to focus on the amount of physical activity they undertake each week as they record their activity levels in a Log Book during each PE lesson. The more time spent on physical activity, the higher the ‘medal’ (certificate) awarded at the end of the challenge. 39 minutes per day = Bronze
45 minutes per day = Silver 60 minutes per day = Gold 80 minutes per day = Diamond.
Each class group’s efforts are averaged over 10 weeks and a certificate is awarded at the beginning of next term. K-2 students record some activity for each day and receive a certificate based on the school average. All physical activity counts, play at school, walking the dog, footy/soccer/netball/hockey training, PE and Sport at school, Saturday sport, Dance, Martial Art, Gymnastics, Horse riding etc. All families are strongly encouraged to discuss the Challenge at home and use this opportunity to find ways to become more active and spend less time looking at a screen. Good luck everyone!
