Cowra Public School NEWS

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT It is with great pride that I start the newsletter this week in reflection of last night’s performance of Cowra Public School students who participated in the wonderful concert held at the Civic Centre. Our school was well represented at the concert having the largest number of students participating in what was a spectacular evening of talent on show from the public schools in Cowra and Canowindra. From such a performance we are reminded of the huge range of opportunities provided through the public education system from Kindergarten to Year 12 in the Cowra area. I would like to congratulate all students involved in the evening and also to the dedicated staff of all schools that tirelessly applied their skills to the teaching and delivery of these programs. A special mention to Mrs Hilton, who led our students in choir and verse speaking and Mrs Wright for her efforts with the band. I would also like to acknowledge the outstanding dancing and drama performed by our students. This week is Education Week and we enjoyed our traditional Pedlars Parade today with the students delighting in making their boxes of wonderful surprises. A huge number of parents took the opportunity to come into the school to visit classrooms and enjoy the parade. This year combined with the concert held last night and again tonight, we celebrate the theme of Education Week being ‘Local Heroes’. Our concert and the work completed behind the scenes to manage such a mammoth task highlights that often we don’t need to look very far to see a local hero. I would like to acknowledge Kerrie O’Dea as one such hero, for her role of coordinator of the concert and thank her on behalf of the school and community for her commitment and drive over the last two months. Last Saturday the Cowra Public School P&C along with Carla Sparks from ‘Style for Women’ held a fashion show at the Mulligan Vineyard. Over 90 ladies attended the afternoon with some wonderful fashions being displayed and modelled by local ladies. The day was a huge success with a great atmosphere, lots of laughter and a very appreciative audience. A big thank you to Kylie Wood

NSW Department of Education for organising the day, Carla Sparks for inviting CPS to be part of the day, the Mulligan family for the amazing venue and all the ladies who braved the catwalk. At school the children who have nominated will complete the UNSW English exam on Friday. This exam was scheduled for Tuesday but due to the fact that so many of our students were performing in the concert and rehearsals, it was postponed until tomorrow. This week we have welcomed Tameeka Tighe to Mr Murray’s classroom where she is completing her university placement. Tameeka is the older sister of our former school captain Lindsey Munro and we are sure Tameeka will enjoy her time with the school. We have also welcomed back Mrs White who has returned refreshed after a wonderful extended holiday. Next week in Stage 2 and Stage 3 the school will be holding the first of two Adventure days for the term. Two children are selected by their class teacher to be invited on the day which

involves rock climbing, bushwalking and even caving. The group will be chosen on the simple criteria of attendance and work ethic. This program has been run at the school for two and half years with well over 150 students having the opportunity of participating. Notes will be issued today and must be returned by Monday. As you would be aware our school is a proud PBL school and later in the term the school will be holding the major PBL reward day. This day will be involve an enormous inflatable slide and gigantic jumping castle that will come to the school in the last week of the term. All children are sure to look forward to this event with no cost directed towards parents. Lastly, next week we have the District Athletics on Friday, 7 August. Mrs Duncan is coordinating our team and we wish all competitors the best of luck in their preparations towards the day. Bradley Tom

PREMIER’S SPORTING CHALLENGE All Cowra Public School students will be participating in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge this term. The Challenge is a great opportunity for children to focus on the amount of physical activity they undertake each week as they record their activity levels in a Log Book during each PE lesson. The more time spent on physical activity, the higher the ‘medal’ (certificate) awarded at the end of the challenge.  39 minutes per day = Bronze

  

45 minutes per day = Silver 60 minutes per day = Gold 80 minutes per day = Diamond.

Each class group’s efforts are averaged over 10 weeks and a certificate is awarded at the beginning of next term. K-2 students record some activity for each day and receive a certificate based on the school average. All physical activity counts, play at school, walking the dog, footy/soccer/netball/hockey training, PE and Sport at school, Saturday sport, Dance, Martial Art, Gymnastics, Horse riding etc. All families are strongly encouraged to discuss the Challenge at home and use this opportunity to find ways to become more active and spend less time looking at a screen. Good luck everyone! Shavaughn Duncan PE/Sport
