Cowra Public School PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
NEWS
Dear Parents Thank you to all parents for the responsible manner in which the children are dressed during the last few days. Winter has really hit back recently and many children are showing signs of the season, requiring days at home to recover from colds and flus. I would like to impress upon parents that if your child is sick, it is far better for your child and others at school that they remain home until well. This week we have enjoyed a timely visit from the Healthy Ears Program in the infants who talked about the correct way to blow a nose effectively, how to get rid of the tissues and why it is so important for good ear health to blow your nose. The children had a great time with these lessons and we have seen a surge in tissue use. Today some very lucky children braved the weather on the Adventure day, with the children rugged up ready for the icy conditions in Orange. The children certainly were excited to maybe see snow and we will be reporting through photos next week the activities they got up to. Tomorrow the Cowra Public School Athletics team will be travelling to Canowindra to compete in the District Athletics Carnival. Hopefully it will be slightly warmer on the day and we look forward to several of our students progressing through to the Western Region finals in Dubbo later in the term. One exciting event coming up at our school is the MOVIE NIGHT scheduled for Wednesday, 19 August. The night will feature the film ‘Home’, and I am sure this will be a huge hit with the whole family. These nights are always a lot of fun with families bringing blankets and pillows into the auditorium and also taking the opportunity not to cook for the night, with the P&C BBQ on hand. More details of the night are to come. This week we welcomed a new music teacher to our school. Glenys Ramage has agreed to provide band guidance while Mrs Wright is taking some time off. We are expecting Mrs Wright to be back leading the band asap but welcome and thank Mrs Ramage for her assistance.

PREMIER’S SPORTING CHALLENGE All Cowra Public School students will be participating in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge this term. The Challenge is a great opportunity for children to focus on the amount of physical activity they undertake each week as they record their activity levels in a Log Book during each PE lesson. The more time spent on physical activity, the higher the ‘medal’ (certificate) awarded at the end of the challenge. 39 minutes per day = Bronze
45 minutes per day = Silver 60 minutes per day = Gold 80 minutes per day = Diamond.
Each class group’s efforts are averaged over 10 weeks and a certificate is awarded at the beginning of next term. K-2 students record some activity for each day and receive a certificate based on the school average. All physical activity counts, play at school, walking the dog, footy/soccer/netball/hockey training, PE and Sport at school, Saturday sport, Dance, Martial Art, Gymnastics, Horse riding etc. All families are strongly encouraged to discuss the Challenge at home and use this opportunity to find ways to become more active and spend less time looking at a screen. Good luck everyone! Shavaughn Duncan PE/Sport
