PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Dear Parents

Term 3, Week 5

This week our school had the pleasure of welcoming Carinya Pre-School during a visit on Tuesday. Thirty five students, parents and educators from the centre enjoyed a morning full of activities and fun. It was lovely to see the outstanding manners and enthusiasm shown by the students. This week the school was delighted to finalise the fundraising efforts of the fashion show with the P&C raising over $500 for the school. A big thank you to everyone involved and to Carla Sparks for her efforts in the event. On Monday students held a fundraiser for Type 1 Diabetes. They sold jelly babies at recess and lunch. This was a great success and we thank the students involved. On Tuesday, students held a Cup Cake Day to raise fund for the RSPCA. This again was a great success with students and staff enjoying the many cup cakes on offer. Thanks to those students who helped coordinate the day. Tomorrow our Year 2 students are really looking forward to going to the Canowindra Age of Fishes Museum and the Historical Museum. This should be a great day and I know that both classes are very excited. The Museum will also play host to other students from our school as they attend a Science Week activity morning. These children will be involved in workshops on Monday morning. On Monday next week the school is going to be represented by Tyahla Munro and Anja Gower in Dubbo at the Western Region NAIDOC Public Speaking finals. Mrs Montgomery will be taking the girls to Dubbo and we are sure they will do an outstanding job and we wish them the best of luck. Also representing the school will be Keira and Kaili Buckley who are part of the Sacred Sharing dance group who will be opening the Public Speaking finals. Next week our school will be hosting the 2016 Kindergarten Parent Information Night on Tuesday, 18 August in the Infants Open Space. This night is very informative and discusses the programs run at the school as well as introducing the staff to parents. This year our school proudly held the best ratio of teacher/student for Kindergarten in the Cowra area and we are hoping to replicate this next year. All parents are welcome even if undecided on school preference at the moment. The evening starts at 7.00pm and light refreshments are available. On Wednesday, 19 August the school will be holding a movie night. This is a P&C event

NSW Department of Education and one that all of the school looks forward to. On the night the P&C will be running a BBQ starting at 5.30pm with a host of great hot food available. Doors to the auditorium will open at 6.00pm with the movie commencing at 6.30pm. Pop corn, lollies and drinks will be available on the night at the canteen to ensure that sense of going to the movies. The movie is the new release film ‘HOME’ which has a PG rating. This is a great film and one that can be enjoyed by the whole family. We welcome everyone to the night and request that children and parents bring a blanket and pillow to sit on. The movie will conclude at approximately 8.30pm allowing for a 20 minute intermission/toilet break. Next week on Friday, the school will be saying goodbye to Mr Myles, as he embarks on some exciting travel followed by a relocation to the south coast. Mr Myles came to the school in Term 2 relieving for Ms. James who has recently had a baby. Mr Myles has been relieving in the library for the last term and a half as well as instructing music across the school. We thank Mr Myles for his time and effort and wish him every success in the future. As mentioned in previous newsletters, our school has been selected to be part of the 2016 School Spectacular being held in Sydney in late November. Thirteen of our girls have been chosen to participate in this enormous event which is wonderful, but as our dance program currently has over sixty five girls and boys involved, it is sad that others were unable to experience the spectacle. As such, the school is looking to purchase tickets for the event at a reduced

rate for the Friday midday performance. The school will be running a one day excursion to the School Spectacular with an early departure and late return to enable our students to see the wonderful event and cheer on their school mates. The school will cover the cost of the coach (which is considerable) and only pass on the ticket costs of the show which will be $25, which is highly discounted. In the next week a note will go home to children and it will be a case of first in, best dressed. The coach has a capacity of 55 seats for children and as this will be open to everyone I suggest you get in quick. On Thursday, 27 August (Week 7) the school will be celebrating Book Week. It is going to be an exciting day with students dressing as their favourite book character and parading down Kendal Street. There are also many other activities taking place on the day including a “Book Swap”, buddy reading and an art display in the Library. Lastly I would like to inform our school community that I have been asked by the Director of Education, Orange, to relieve as Principal at Calare Public School in Orange for a period of three weeks at the end of this term. In my absence Mrs Cole will be the Relieving Principal of the school and I have no doubt that the Mrs Cole will do an outstanding job. I will be returning to start Term 4 as normal and look forward to continuing our wonderful programs. Bradley Tom

Many children ride bicycles, yet have little idea of basic cycling skills and safety, either off or on the roads. Each year children’s lives are lost in cycling accidents. Many of the accidents do not involve another moving vehicle and could be prevented through improved knowledge, skills and attitude. As part of our road safety program, we are conducting a halfday session of cycling activities at school for Year 4. To gain full benefit from the program, children with bicycles and Standards Association of Australia approved cycling safety helmets should bring them to school on Wednesday, 9 September 2015. The helmet must be worn in the interests of safety and it is now the law. Children should try to arrange to borrow a helmet for the day if they do not own one. All helmets brought to school should have the child’s name on them. These basic cycling skills and safety lessons DO NOT INCLUDE CYCLING ON THE ROAD. All lessons will be conducted in the school playground. Their aim is to improve cycling safety. Please check your child’s bicycle for safety and discuss the way in which you would like your child to transport the bicycle to school. Parental help in the supervision and instruction of children would be most gratefully appreciated. The course will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and again from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., on Wednesday, 9 September 2015. Children who are not able to get a bike to school for this day are encouraged to make arrangements to share a friend’s bike in order to participate in the bike safety activities. A permission note has gone home. Please complete and return to school if you wish your child to take part in this safety program. Albert Murray Bike Coordinator
