Cowra Public School NEWS

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Dear Parents

Term 3, Week 6

What an exciting week at school! Starting on Monday our school was in the spotlight at the Western Region finals of the NAIDOC Public Speaking Challenge held in Dubbo, and sure enough our students Anja Gower, Tyahla Munro accompanied by Mrs Montgomery stormed to the win and will now represent the region in Sydney in late November at Government House. We congratulate the girls and wish them the best as they strive to retain the State Championship trophy that Cowra Public School also won last year. On Tuesday the school held the 2016 Kindergarten Parent information evening and with great numbers attending it was a wonderful opportunity for parents to hear from our staff about the programs on offer at Cowra Public School. Last night the school also held the Term 3 Movie Night and again this was a very successful evening. The auditorium was filled with families who enjoyed a great movie atmosphere whilst the smell of popcorn filled the air. The children and parents took advantage of not having to cook with the P&C BBQ doing a roaring trade and I thank the men and ladies from the P&C who attended to help with the running of the canteen and BBQ. I would like to commend parents for their prompt collection of children from the auditorium and to the many parents who assisted with the tidy up. Today the school provided parents with the 2015 NAPLAN results from the testing that was conducted across the nation for students in Years 3 and 5 at the early point of Term 2. These results showed some very positive growth in the majority of all students and I invite parents to come in to talk on these results at any point. This week we say thank you and goodbye to Mr Myles who will travelling overseas then relocating to the south coast. It has been a pleasure to have Mr Myles at our school. We welcome Mrs Edwards to our school next week to work in the library. Mrs Edwards has worked at our school previously before being married (Miss Dowler) and we are very excited by her return until the end of the term. This week our school has also been focusing on the Western Region Athletics

NSW Department of Education Carnival that will be held next Friday, 28 August in Dubbo. With the school having 22 students attending the event, we have been practising and fine tuning our runners and field event athletes. Next week is Book Week with the theme being, “Books Light Up Our World”. We will be celebrating Book Week with a host of activities including a book swap, competitions and a dress up day on Thursday, where children are welcome to dress as their favourite book character. On this day the children who have dressed up will do our annual street walk down the main street so that the Cowra community can see our wonderful students and the effort they have put in. We are also having a special lunch order day on Thursday which can be pre-ordered from the canteen which is our special red day for the term. Details of the selection will be sent home next week. Stage 2 are getting very excited with the Blue Mountains Excursion just around the corner. Parents are reminded of this, to start to have conversations with children

on possibly not being with mum and dad for the first time overnight. Traditionally we have found parents will find this harder than the children so it is a good time to prepare and avoid emotional scenes as the bus moves away from the school. Congratulations go to Harlee Simms who is in Sydney with the Western Region Rugby Union team this week. Harlee has played three games over three days so far and the team has won two out of five g a m e s . Harlee has scored two tries for the We s t e r n Region team. Well done Harlee. Enjoy the week. Bradley Tom

YEAR 4 ROAD SAFETY PROGRAM CYCLING SKILLS

-

Many children ride bicycles, yet have little idea of basic cycling skills and safety, either off or on the roads. Each year children’s lives are lost in cycling accidents. Many of the accidents do not involve another moving vehicle and could be prevented through improved knowledge, skills and attitude. As part of our road safety program, we are conducting a halfday session of cycling activities at school for Year 4. To gain full benefit from the program, children with bicycles and Standards Association of Australia approved cycling safety helmets should bring them to school on Wednesday, 9 September 2015. The helmet must be worn in the interests of safety and it is now the law. Children should try to arrange to borrow a helmet for the day if they do not own one. All helmets brought to school should have the child’s name on them. These basic cycling skills and safety lessons DO NOT INCLUDE CYCLING ON THE ROAD. All lessons will be conducted in the school playground. Their aim is to improve cycling safety. Please check your child’s bicycle for safety and discuss the way in which you would like your child to transport the bicycle to school.
