Cowra Public School NEWS Term 3, Week 7

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Dear Parents The magic of books was well and truly on show today with Cowra Public School coming to life with hundreds of characters from the children’s favourite books walking through the playground. Of course I am talking of the dress up day associated with the Book Week activities being held at the school. This year the Book Week theme is “Books Light Up Our Lives” and we have definitely used books to light up our world including a book swap that saw every student receiving at least two pre loved books to take home and enjoy. We also held a story time which saw parents enjoy dressing up and reading to students as well as special order treats that were available at the canteen. A huge thank you to all students and staff for supporting the week in such a positive manner and a special mention to Mrs Montgomery for coordinating the week. I can honestly say it has been a delight to see the laughter and enjoyment of the staff associated with the dress up day and the reaction of the children seeing their teachers dressing up. Last week Harley Simms competed in the NSW Rugby Championships as part of the Western Region team and we congratulate him on scoring several tries during the tournament. The team competed strongly winning two games and narrowly missing wins in their other games. Next week we will have our Stage 2 children visiting the Blue Mountains on the annual excursion. For many students this will be their first overnight excursion and possibly the first time they are away from

NSW Department of Education Mum and Dad. I am sure the Mums will suffer more from the experience but rest assured the children will return. The children are bound to enjoy the activities scheduled for both days that will include visits to landmarks, bushwalking and the scenic railway, which is always a favourite. The departure time for Monday is 7.00am, with an expected arrival home at 7.00pm. These times are very important to enable the trip to run smoothly and we ask all parents to ensure they arrive on Monday on time. If the bus is running late on Tuesday, the arrival time will be displayed on our electronic board near the Woolworths roundabout. I have been delighted to move around the school at this time of the year and see the productive work the children are doing in their rooms and the positive attitudes held by the children in relation to their learning and education. Our staff are enjoying the outstanding behaviour displayed by our students and we are all looking forward to the PBL reward day being held at the end of the term for all students in the school who have

displayed our PBL expectations of being Safe, Respectful and On Task. Tomorrow we have a huge number of Cow ra Public School students travelling to Dubbo to compete in the Western Region Athletics. From running to field events we have representatives who are no doubt going to do their very best. We wish them the best and look forward to several students possibly qualifying for the State Championships held later in the year. We are moving into the end of the winter season sport both at school and on the weekend and I hope everyone has a great week and good luck to all students involved in grand finals this weekend. Enjoy the week.

YEAR 4 ROAD SAFETY PROGRAM CYCLING SKILLS

Shavuaghn Duncan PE/Sport

P&C -

Many children ride bicycles, yet have little idea of basic cycling skills and safety, either off or on the roads. Each year children’s lives are lost in cycling accidents. Many of the accidents do not involve another moving vehicle and could be prevented through improved knowledge, skills and attitude. As part of our road safety program, we are conducting a halfday session of cycling activities at school for Year 4. To gain full benefit from the program, children with bicycles and Standards Association of Australia approved cycling safety helmets should bring them to school on Wednesday, 9 September 2015. The helmet must be worn in the interests of safety and it is now the law. Children should try to arrange to borrow a helmet for the day if they do not own one. All helmets brought to school should have the child’s name on them. These basic cycling skills and safety lessons DO NOT INCLUDE CYCLING ON THE ROAD. All lessons will be conducted in the school playground. Their aim is to improve cycling safety.

P & C MEETING Tonight Thursday, 27 August 2015 6.00pm In the school staffroom Everyone is welcome to attend FATHER’S DAY STALL

Please check your child’s bicycle for safety and discuss the way in which you would like your child to transport the bicycle to school. Parental help in the supervision and instruction of children would be most gratefully appreciated. The course will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and again from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., on Wednesday, 9 September 2015. Children who are not able to get a bike to school for this day are encouraged to make arrangements to share a friend’s bike in order to participate in the bike safety activities. A permission note has gone home. Please complete and return to school if you wish your child to take part in this safety program. Albert Murray Bike Coordinator
