Cowra Public School NEWS Term 3, Week 9

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Dear Parents Congratulations to our Premier's Spelling Bee contestants. Yesterday Tahlee-Pearl Beckett, Archie Osborne, Maddy Mulligan and Jessica Henderson participated in this most daunting contest. All our students made it through to rounds two and three and a special congratulations to Archie Osborne who came second in the Junior Section. It is a great achievement. On Wednesday our Stage 3 students participated in the T20 Cricket Day. Many students showed their potential to be future representatives in the Australian cricket team. We appreciate these opportunities for our students to develop their skills and talents and would like to thank the Cowra Junior Cricket Association and Cricket NSW for organising the event. At the same time as Stage 3 were cricketing, our Stage 2 students were wending their way around the playground focussing on the rules that will make then safe road users. This day is only made possible due to the input from the PCYC

FOR YOUR DIARY

NSW Department of Education police officers, parents, student helpers and Mr Murray, as coordinator. Over the day we saw students gain in confidence, develop their expertise and heighten their awareness of the dangers of road use. Thank you to everyone for making this possible. We were privileged to have Alison Stephens visit the school and share her experience as a marathon runner in the ‘Big Red Run,’ raising money for diabetes research. This was an inspirational afternoon and we thank her for giving us her valuable time. Thank you also to Cailin McKay, Bella Scammell and Lorissa Woods for sharing their knowledge of the event. We expect to see their names listed as entrants in the event in the not too distant future. On Friday many Year 6 students will be taking part in the Cowra High School Gifted and Talented assessment. There will still be opportunities to participate in the process at a later date, by contacting the High School, if your child has been unavailable to complete the evaluation at this time.

Of course next week leads into Cowra Show. We hope that you will be able to visit the school display and see some of the amazing work our students have produced. The show is just one of the many ways in which we showcase the work and activities that take place throughout the school year. We congratulate all our students who have entered into the great variety of competitions and wish them every success. With one week to go before holidays we still have a range of activities on the school calendar! Our Jumping Castle and Giant Slide will be a wonderful reward for an excellent term. (Due to our Jumping Castle and Giant Slide we will not be holding assemblies on Thursday 17 September.) Regards

SCHOOL SPECTACULAR 2015 MATINEE PERFORMANCE Cowra Public School has been selected to be part of the 2015 School Spectacular being held in November. Thirteen of our girls have been chosen to participate in the spectacular on Friday, 27 November and Saturday, 28 November.

SPORT

Page 4

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART Jump Rope for Heart is coming! Tomorrow, Friday, 11 September is our “Jump Off Day” and will replace normal Friday afternoon sport. All students should have received a sponsorship form by now and I encourage everyone to aim to achieve a particular fundraising goal in order to earn a great prize and raise some much needed funds for the National Heart Foundation! The quickest and easiest way to fundraise is online. Find out how at www.heartfoundation.org/aujumprope for heart. Fundraising begins now and all funds are due to the school (excluding online donations) by Friday, 18 September. Anyone needing a sponsorship form should see Mrs Duncan ASAP.

The spectacular will be holding a matinee performance on Friday, 27 November for school children. As our dance program has over sixty five boys and girls participating at the moment, we would like to give our dance students and Stage 3 students the opportunity to experience the spectacular. The school has purchased tickets for the Friday matinee performance at a reduced rate of $25.00 per ticket and have offered these to the dance students first and now to Stage 3 students. The school is covering the cost of the bus to and from Sydney. The bus will depart Cowra Public School at 6.00am and return at approximately at 8.00pm. As the bus has a capacity to hold fifty five students it will be the first fifty five students who return their permission note along with the $25.00 ticket cost to the school that will get to go.

YEAR 4 BIKE DAY Year 4 students enjoyed another fun and successful Bike Day yesterday with over 50 students participating. Students were placed into small groups and had to build on and develop their bike riding skills. This was done through a number of different activities which focused on various skills of riding a bike. Mr Carter was the leader of the obstacle course and had kids navigating their way through a maze of challenging tasks. Mr Roberts shared his extreme wealth of knowledge and expertise on maintaining a safe bike whilst Mrs Carter had the students on the ‘straight and narrow’ riding to keep in a straight line. Mr Mulligan was teaching the kids about safe braking along with Mr and Mrs Paki. Mr Buchan was trying his best to rope the students in. He had them riding between two lengths of rope, adjusting the width to challenge their balance. Mr Duncombe had the kids riding in a figure eight and Mr Murray had the kids touching their toes. Mrs Long, Cailin and Alyssa taught the kids how to hop their bikes and Mrs Cobcroft was signalling left and right. Janine Robinson from Cowra PCYC brought in her stop lights and had the kids stopping and starting all day. Overall it was a fantastic day in beautiful sunshine with all kids gaining valuable skills to help them ride their bikes safely. A huge thank you to all the parents and teachers that helped on the day. Without your assistance days like yesterday would be impossible to have.
