Term 3 Week 10 27th September 2018
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Lorissa Wood as “Alice”
It’s hard to believe but here we are, at the end of another busy term! The last 10 weeks have been filled with a huge variety of learning activities, sporting events, cultural experiences and excursions. No wonder we are all feeling like we need a holiday! Our NAIDOC Public Speakers travelled to Dubbo on Tuesday to compete in the Regional Public Speaking competition against teams from all over western NSW. As always, the standard of speakers was exceptionally high, with teams vying for a spot in the State final. I am very excited to announce that our team of Haylie Ingram and Samantha Van Zyl were the overall winners of the challenge! Our second team of Niamh Webster and Montana Drage also did an amazing job, displaying great skill and teamwork. Well done to all speakers and we look forward to seeing Haylie and Samantha compete in the state finals next term. A huge thank you to Miss Katrina Noble and Miss Catherine Gorham who coached both teams and to the parents who travelled to Dubbo and were a very supportive cheer squad! On Wednesday evening the Cowra Civic Centre was filled to capacity as Cowra Public School presented the incredible stage show; “Alice in Wonderland”! With beautiful singing, talented dancing and amazing acting, the audience was thoroughly entertained from start to finish! The stage was filled with colour and movement and all 215 students who participated had the time of their lives! Thank you to the many students and parents who assisted us in putting on such a huge production! While it takes an army of volunteers and lots of manpower to be ‘performance ready’, I would like to thank and acknowledge the work of our staff, in particular Mrs Sheryl-Ann Pulling, Mrs Sheridan Oborn, Mrs Trisha Long and Miss Amy Irvine, who have been the driving force behind this production from the very beginning, way back in February. They have literally put in hundreds of hours sourcing props, organising costumes, running auditions, working with dancers, singers and actors, booking venues, printing programs, making phone calls and sending emails, organising music and it goes on and on and on…! And the reason they do this is so that ALL of our students can have the opportunity to shine and be part of something very special. Congratulations to everyone who participated; I can’t wait to see the final performance tonight at 7pm!

Next term we begin the organisation for 2019. Our Kinder Transition dates have been set with our first visit on Tuesday 23rd October and we encourage families with outstanding enrolment forms to please return these to the school office as we start the process of forming classes for next year. I am pleased to inform the school community that we have been successful in our application to set up an additional Support Class in 2019. Currently we have two Support Classes at Cowra PS taught by Mrs Haskew and Mrs Hopkins. A third Support Class will enable us to provide additional assistance for our students who require a little extra help with their academic and social learning and benefit from a smaller classroom environment. This class will be taught by a new Assistant Principal and Student Learning Support Officer and we will complete the staffing of this class during Term 4.
the end of Term 4 Week 1 (19th October). The annual Cowra Show will be held on the 13th and 14th October which is the last weekend of the school holidays. There will be a Cowra Public School display set up in the Pavilion. We hope to see lots of CPS students and families at the show and I thank the staff for giving up part of their holidays to set up and ‘man’ the display…please pop in and say hello! Speaking of school holidays tomorrow is the last day of Term 3! I hope all families have a wonderful spring break and enjoy some special family time over the two week period. We look forward to seeing all students return to school on Monday 15th October. Have a great week…
Jenny Lewis Attached to this week’s Newsletter are two Principal
surveys I would encourage families to complete and return. The first is a Homework Survey for all students. We would like to gain parents ideas around the type, frequency and duration of homework activities for each grade/stage level in our school. We would also like to determine parents’ thoughts on the importance of homework and if the current homework provided to students is suitable. The information provided will assist us as we work to develop a consistent school-wide approach to Homework in each Stage. Surveys are in paper form as well as on-line at the following link: https:// goo.gl/forms/fidBJPyBUvZuBxNr1 and I ask that they be completed and submitted by the end of Term 4 Week 1 (19th October). The second survey is a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Survey for parents of students in Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4). As the explanatory letter details, we are working with Cowra High School, Mulyan PS and the Cowra Small Schools to gauge interest in implementing a BYOD program in Cowra schools for Stage 3 students. The proposal is that schools purchase a laptop for each student going into Year 5 in 2019, which parents are then able to pay off over a period of two years. By the time their child leaves Year 6 and heads off to High School, they would own their own laptop, suitable for use in Year 7. Once surveys are completed, we will look at the responses and determine whether this is an idea we pursue. Surveys are available in paper form or can be completed online at: https://goo.gl/forms/p8J3sLymDPyH6ezO2

CPS School Notifications
Attendance
Cowra Public will be trialling a new student attendance monitoring procedure through our school’s administration system, ‘Sentral’. Which began on Monday 24th September, parents/ carers of students that have been marked as absent will be sent an SMS message requesting an explanation for absence. This will provide parents/ carers with an alternative to sending in written notes or phoning the school. It will also allow CPS to efficiently and effectively monitor student attendance. If you receive an SMS message from Cowra Public regarding attendance it would be greatly appreciated if you could respond as soon as you can. Any issues or concerns about this method of notification, or your child’s attendance please contact me at school on 63422400. Thank you. Assistant Principal Wellbeing Albert Murray
