Cowra Public School NEWS Term 3, Week 2
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT We are already at the end of Week 2 and things have been progressing well. Today we celebrate “Christmas in July” with a mufti day to help raise funds for the school’s participation in the amazing School Spectacular. It is really a great achievement to have been selected to participate in this major entertainment event for the second year running. I wish all of the students who are involved and our dedicated teachers, Mrs Cobcroft and Mrs Duncan all the best at the event. This week four staff, including myself, attended a workshop in Dubbo for two days around Behavi our Management and Non Violent Crisis Intervention. The purpose of our involvement was to continually find ways to peacefully resolve issues between students. All of us have

NSW Department of Education and Communities experienced school and school playgrounds at some point in our lives and it is a vital part of our socialisation as we learn to be a member of a wide and diverse community. All of our students are on a journey of learning about life, how to negotiate new and current relationships – learning to resolve arguments and disagreements. The professional learning experience we attended will add yet a further “string to our bow” as we work with our kids to help them grow into mature and well socialised members of this very important community of Cowra. The PBL program at school is our main tool in helping to teach our kids how to act and behave well at school. We explicitly teach our kids the very basics of living and sharing our school playground and classrooms – corridors, learning spaces, library, toilets and computer rooms. This week the focus is on the toilet areas. Our lessons encourage kids to use the facilities quickly and to exit directly afterwards – respecting other students whilst visiting the toilet block.
I encourage all parents to join in the conversation each week with their kids. We want all kids to be safe and happy at school and these PBL lessons are one tool to achieve this. I have long remarked that the most influential people in a child’s life is their parents, so it is important that our kids hear these important lessons and advice from their parents as well. Together we can help all kids to develop excellent social skills. I wish you all a very relaxing weekend and we look forward to Week 3 and some terrific learning ahead. Happy “Christmas in July” to you all. Steve Wilkinson Principal (Rlvg)

FACEBOOK IS COMING TO COWRA PUBLIC SCHOOL We are very excited to announce that Cowra Public School is launching our official Facebook page during Education Week on Thursday, 4 August. As many parents are aware there has been a Cowra Public School Facebook page for sometime , run by a parent of our school Mrs Katie Piol. We want to thank Katie for identifying the need for this form of communication and managing the site up to this point. Katie has changed the name of this page to Parents of Cowra Public School to avoid confusion with the school’s official page. The school will use the Facebook page to share some of the wonderful stories that happen in our school every day as well as communicating important news and events as they arise. Within the page’s description we have set some Rules of Engagement. It is our goal that this Facebook page sets a good example of how our students should engage with social media as they get old enough to start participating themselves. We will be sharing photos of our students on our Facebook site. We will only ever use first names to identify students and will not share personal or private information. If you do not wish for your child to appear on the official Cowra Public School Facebook page, you will need to notify the school. A form will be sent home for you to sign. Please observe a few simple rules of engagement. 1. 2. 3. 4.
Keep all comments respectful with no swearing or personal criticisms. Inappropriate content will be removed. Please be aware of other’s privacy. Don’t post images or private or identifying details (including surnames) of children or adults without their permission. We will respond to your questions as soon as possible between 9am and 4pm on school days. If you have an emergency contact the school on 02 6342 2400 This page is setting an example for our children on how to correctly use social media.
