Cowra Public School Term 3, Week 4
10 August 2017
FOR YOUR DIARY
Dear Parents/Caregivers, Welcome to Week 4! After an exciting and busy Education Week last week, it has been terrific to see our students settle back into class routines and focusing hard on their learning. Thank you to the large number of parents and family members who attended CPS Open Day – the excitement on the children’s faces when they saw a family member walk into their classroom was priceless!

The annual Pedlar’s Parade was also a huge success! Thank you to the Infants students for their amazing Pedlar’s boxes, to the P&C who kept everyone well-fed with delicious cakes and slices, and to the parents who supported this important fundraiser for our school. Over $1,100 was raised from the sale of the boxes and the Infants classes will be putting these funds towards a new shade shelter for our Infants playground. This week many of our students have been out and about attending various academic and sporting events. Our Girls Soccer team contested Round 3 in the PSSA Soccer Knockout on Tuesday afternoon and came up against a strong Mulyan side, going down 2-0. The girls had a fantastic time and played with outstanding sportsmanship. Thank you to Miss Catherine Gorham for her hard work in coaching the team to this point in the competition! Our NAIDOC Public Speakers – Joshua James, Niamh Webster, Tahlee-Pearl Beckett and Jake Roberts will be competing in the Regional competition in Dubbo on Thursday accompanied by their coach Mrs Trisha Long and on Friday we have 43 students heading off to the Cowra PSSA District Athletics Carnival – good luck to all students competing! On Tuesday afternoon the staff attended a three-hour professional learning workshop on Google Classroom which was delivered by Mr Andrew Hetherington – Head Teacher Teaching and Learning for the Lachlan Area. Teachers were introduced to a variety of Google apps and had the opportunity to practice setting up their own Google classroom focusing on the technology skills that our students will need as they move from primary to the high school setting in the future. The staff also participated in a “Breakout Challenge" using the four C's - cooperation, collaboration, communication and critical thinking and can't wait to share this new knowledge with our students! Every three years, NSW Public Schools are required to develop a new strategic School Plan which details specific goals and targets that each school aims to meet. Thank you to those families who have already completed and returned their “Backpack” Surveys. If you have misplaced yours, please contact the office for a replacement. We will be accepting surveys up until the end of August, and are asking families to let us know the skills, knowledge or experiences you would like your child to have when they leave CPS in Year 6 and embark on their High School journey. This is a great opportunity for you to have a say in the future direction of our wonderful school. I look forward to meeting many of our new families and students starting Kindergarten in 2018 at our Parent Information Night next Monday 14th August starting at 7pm in the Infants Open Space. If you know of any families with children starting school in 2018, please encourage them to come along and see what our amazing school has to offer! Have a great week… Jenny Lewis Principal

PEDLARS PARADE The Pedlars’ parade was a huge success last Thursday with our infant’s children proudly displaying their wares to their family and friends. Thank you so much to all parents for their support in donating the boxes and purchasing the boxes. This is infant’s fundraiser for the year, and this year we raised a little over $1100. This money will be directed towards erecting a shade over our playground equipment. The school and P&C will also be supporting the purchase of this structure to ensure that our students can safely use the very popular equipment in the hotter months of the year.
STAGE 3 : CHANGE DETECTIVES All the stage 3 "Change Detective Students" will be continuing their detective work AT HOME this week as they investigate the melting and re-freezing of an ice-block on a stick. The teachers look forward to seeing the results next week, and hopefully the weather is warmer so the 'detectives' can enjoy the ice-block after their experiment!

U2 Sing for Neighbourhood Centre
Friday 4th August 2017, was a very special day for many reasons. First and foremost, it was National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day. As part of this, U2 were extremely proud to have been invited to represent Cowra Public School at the Neighbourhood Centre to share in the community celebrations. During Term 2, Mr Murray and Aunty Esther taught Wiradjuri language to Stage 2. In this time U2 were fortunate enough to have learnt an extra special song - an Aboriginal lullaby, Wirrinya. The morning was a great success, and the food the Neighbourhood Centre kindly provided was most appreciated and enjoyed by all! As a result, our school has been invited to attend and become part of this important community network at regular times in the future.
