PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Term 3, Week 5

Dear Parents

18 August 2016

NSW Department of Education and Communities On Tuesday evening our infants department hosted the annual kindergarten information evening for new and returning parents. I would like to thank all of our visitors who took time out of their busy lives to come along to hear about the wonderful educational opportunities we offer here at Cowra Public School – some of which include large double classrooms, ProWise touch screens (the “smart chalk boards” of the future), Aboriginal language classes, music lessons, an impressive band, and wonderful mix of experienced and new teachers who have the education of the students at this school at the heart of everything they do. I would like to thank Mrs Ryan and Mrs Williams for their excellent organisation of the event and to all of the infants/STLA staff for their participation in the event. Today we enjoyed a fly past of a Hercules heavy lift military aircraft as part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. The Battle of Long Tan was the single largest loss of Australian life during the conflict, and began after a company of 108 men was ambushed at the Long Tan rubber plantation. Eighteen Australians were killed in the battle and 24 were wounded, along with almost 250 Viet Cong soldiers. I would like to thank the organisers of this fly past as the students not only had the opportunity to discuss the

Long Tan battle and sacrifices made by the soldiers on both sides of the conflict – but also enjoyed the amazing spectacle of such a large military aircraft flying low over the school and township of Cowra. Child Protection Week will be held this year, during Week 8 from the 5th September. Our Year 1 students have been invited to attend a fun day at Mulyan school between 10 am and 12:30 pm on Friday 9th September 2016. More information will be attached to a permission note later this term – but I can report that the activities look amazing and include Aboriginal Art, colouring, face painting, Fitness fun, fire truck, police and an ambulance display, Storytelling, and many other fun things to do. Back2Cowra organisation proceeds well with the amazing efforts of Mark McLeish and his trusty team of helpers. Our school will be opening the doors to the public on Friday the 16th Sep (times yet to be determined) for the nostalgic among us returning to Cowra for the experience of a lifetime. Afterwards we will be offering a BBQ lunch for our visitors and inviting them to our major assembly which we are moving from our usual date to the Friday. We are looking forward to being part of this great experience. Recently we have had a number of students arriving at school prior to 8:40 am – some as early as 8:15 am. We have a policy

Our condolences and heart felt best wishes to the family of young Malakye Davidson who sadly passed away recently. May our collective community support lift this beautiful family and the amazing Holman Place school during this very sad time. We will be thinking of you now and the weeks and months to come.

The school’s motto is “Knowledge is Power” and the emphasis is on giving every child, every opportunity, every day to support them in reaching their full potential as individuals .

that students should not be in the playground until 8.40am. If they arrive a few minutes early they are to sit on the silver seats (Primary) or under the COLA (Infants) until the teacher arrives for duty. The reason for this policy is that we are not able to offer supervision prior to 8:40 am and our concern is that students arriving early are unsupervised and, as safety is our main concern we ask that you please do not drop your kids off before 8:40 am.
