YOU ARE INVITED…. This Friday 18th August at 10.30 our Combined Choir, accompanied by Mrs Long, will be singing at the Neighbourhood Centre. Parents and community members are invited to come and watch and enjoy Morning tea.
Dear Parents/Caregivers, Week 5 marks the half-way mark in the term and students and teachers have been busy both in and out of the classrooms. Our NAIDOC Public Speakers travelled to Dubbo last Thursday to compete in the Regional Public Speaking competition against teams from all over western NSW. The standard was exceptionally high with 14 teams competing for two spots in the state final. I am very excited to announce that our team of Tahlee-Pearl Beckett and Jake Roberts were successful in winning the challenge, with Orange Public placing second! Our other team of Niamh Webster and Josh James also did an amazing job, displaying great teamwork. Well done to all speakers and we look forward to seeing Tahlee and Jake competing in the state finals in October. A huge thank you to Mrs Trisha Long who coached both teams and to the parents who travelled to Dubbo and were an amazing cheer squad! Last Friday our District athletes participated in the Cowra District PSSA Athletics Carnival and gave their all in both track and field events. Miss Sam Dunk and Miss Katrina Noble accompanied the students to the carnival and reported on their outstanding sportsmanship and behaviour. Congratulations to all who participated and well done to those students who were successful in making it through to the Western Region Carnival, which will be held in Dubbo on September 1st. Special congratulations are extended to Brody Fiene and Imogen Chambers who were both named District Age Champions. Also in sport, Thomas Seears is currently competing in the Boys Soccer State Knockout as a member of the Western Soccer Team and we look forward to hearing how he and the team performed when he returns later in the week. Thank you to the large number of ‘new’ parents who attended Monday night’s 2018 Kindergarten Information Evening. The Infants staff did a fantastic job putting together a relaxed, informative and enjoyable evening where parents heard all about our wonderful school and had a chance to look through the Kindergarten classrooms. We are now accepting enrolment forms for children beginning Kindergarten in 2018 and these are available from the school office. If you know of any families considering enrolling their child at Cowra PS, please encourage them to contact Mrs Williams or Mrs Murray in the office. We happily give school tours and love any opportunity to show off our amazing school. It is my pleasure to announce that Mr Albert Murray has been appointed, through merit selection, as Assistant Principal at Cowra Public School. Mr Murray has been relieving in this role following the retirement of Mrs Kathryn Macnamara earlier in the year, and now takes up the position in a permanent capacity. Mr Murray’s experience, dedication and passion, along with his in-depth knowledge of the CPS School Community, make him a wonderful asset to the executive team and on behalf of the students, staff and families I congratulate him on this achievement. Thank you to the families of our School Spectacular students for supporting our first Cupcake Stall fundraiser this week. Mrs Long and Mrs Cobcroft have come up with some excellent ideas to raise money this year, including a CPS Cookbook! Please find information about this attached to this week’s Newsletter. Have a great week… Jenny Lewis Principal

Kindergarten Transition Program At Cowra Public School, we operate an extensive year-long program that provides comprehensive, meaningful experiences for families and their children before they commence Kindergarten. Over the past few weeks, our Kindergarten teachers have enjoyed visits to the local pre-schools to provide engaging learning experiences with a focus on literacy and numeracy. During our visit last week, the pre-school children at Good Start Early Learning Centre even welcomed Mr Murray with their Welcome Gawaymbahna song. During Week 3, children from each pre-school explored our school library with Mrs Oborn and participated in a shared reading session of the “Snow Wombat”. We look forward to hosting all pre-schools and educators again in Week 8 to join our current Kindergarten students in a literacy session within our class rooms.
As the children begin school transition at Good Start, they engaged in a dreamtime story and cultural activities with Kindergarten teachers and Mr Murray.
Miss Causton and Mrs McFarland discovred some Very Cranky Bears at Yalbillinga Boori Early Learning Centre after reading the story to the pre-school children.
Children at Nurture One enjoyed making their own rainbow fish puppets using water colour paints.

Last Thursday, our two NAIDOC public speaking competitions journeyed to Dubbo to compete in the Regional Finals of the NAIDOC Public Speaking Challenge. This competition involves schools from all around Western Region. The competition this year was of an incredibly high standard, with 14 teams contesting the topic 'Our Languages Matter'. Schools competing at the regional finals included schools from Orange district, Broken Hill, Brewarrina, Mudgee, Kelso, Dubbo, Condobolin and Bourke. Our first team Tahlee-Pearl Beckett and Jake Roberts spoke first and had the audience enthralled with a perfect delivery of their speech. Our second team of Niamh Webster and Josh James also gave an outstanding speech at the end of the competition. The guest speaker for the day was Joe Williams, an accomplished sportsman who was born in Cowra. Joe gave the audience an inspiring speech on his career highs and lows, and how to overcome adversity. We were very excited to learn at the conclusion of the day, that our team of Tahlee-Pearl and Jake were declared winners, and they now progress to the State Finals to be held in Term 4. Thank you to the parents for assisting the students in their preparation for this competition and special thanks to Mrs Tori Gordon for transporting our team to Dubbo. A huge thanks to the students for their support of each other on the day and their commitment throughout the last two terms. It has been a pleasure to work with all of you.
