Cowra Public School NEWS

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT What a delight Book Week has been and what great fun we all had dressing up as our favourite character, from our favourite book. I’ve been to many schools over the years but none can hold a candle to Cowra PS for their enthusiasm and passion to impress! I was surprised to discover we would be heading out of the school gate and down the main street – forming a procession as we went. Such a great community event and a huge thank you to the community of Cowra for coming out and supporting our kids as they marched past the businesses of Cowra. What a great place to grow up and live. I’d like to thank our teachers too – as they joined in the fun and dressed up in either “Where’s Wally” or “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves”. I was particularly impressed with Mr Ryan who went way beyond the call of duty and dressed as Snow White. It can’t be easy being the only man in the Infants section! I dressed as Captain Haddock from the Tin Tin series – and felt my age a little when I was asked who Tin Tin was. It was all great fun and I hope our students had a great time being part of this annual event. I’d like to say a special thank you to Mrs Oborn for her terrific organisation of this great day. I suspect that it is days such as this that remain with us long after our memories of school start to fade. The NAPLAN results for Years 3 and 4 were returned last week to the school and they were sent home to parents on

NSW Department of Education and Communities Friday. I trust that you have received the relevant information and have had an opportunity to peruse your child’s results. You are most welcome to phone the school and to make an appointment with your child’s class teacher if you have any particular issues you would like to discuss. The NAPLAN results for the school were very positive and the trend has been towards overall improvement. Please remember that the results are for a series of tests over a three day period once every two years. They assist the school to work out where we need to target extra assistance and where we need to focus our teaching strategies. What we are hoping for especially is excellent growth for students between Years 3 and Years 5. We are very fortunate to be receiving a visit from the Manly Selective High School 46 piece band on the 21 September 2016 for a free concert in our school hall. All of our students K-6 will be invited to attend the performance which I am sure will be a fantastic and entertaining experience. The teacher – Mr Discoll - is working with Mrs Wright to find a time for the school bands to work together. I’d like to invite any interested parents to join us for the performance. We will settle in the hall for a 9:30 am start. The show will last for approximately 1 hour. This week’s Positive Behaviour for Learning lesson is about communication – how to

Combined Assembly 2.00pm

I’m pleased to announce that our climbing wall play equipment is being manufactured as I write this newsletter. It should arrive at school ready for installation on or around Tuesday, 20 September. It certainly looks like it is going to be a whole load of fun for the kids to climb upon. Hopefully it should be installed and ready to go well before the end of the school year. Just a quick reminder that a P&C working bee will be held here at Cowra PS this Sunday, 28 August starting at 10:00 am. Ground improvements, mulching and planting are on the agenda. If you are free (and weather permitting) hope to see you there. Thanks Steve Wilkinson Principal (Rlvg)

communicate in ways that are respectful, polite and conducive to good relationships. Long have I believed that almost all conflict at schools starts with horrible or hurtful things said between kids. We really encourage our students to think carefully about what they say and how they say things to each other. All schools are much nicer places where the language used is friendly, caring and polite. I’d like to thank our families here at Cowra PS for supporting us to achieve this goal.

The school’s motto is “Knowledge is Power” and the emphasis is on giving every child, every opportunity, every day to support them in reaching their full potential as individuals .
