Cowra Public School NEWS

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT My gratitude and thanks to the Parents and Citizens’ Association and the mums and dads who arrived at the school last Sunday, wheelbarrow and shovel at the ready, to help make some terrific improvements to the school grounds. The sun shone on our backs as we moved tonnes of mulch into garden areas in the Primary and Infants gardens areas along with the planting of some hardy vegetation to brighten our wonderful school play areas. Old sand was removed and new sand was added to restore our sandpits to their former glory. I would like to thank our trusty General Assistant – Mr Gerard McGill for his excellent planning and enthusi asm to see ground improvements. We are also very grateful to Hugh Scammell for his bobcat work on Friday in preparation for the work on Sunday, and to Darren Nelligan for the sand and rocks and his help on both Friday and Saturday. Many hands certainly helped make lighter work and for your dedication to the school – our thanks to you all. The Father’s Day stall was held this week with a great amount of organisation by Mrs Sarah Casey who dedicated herself to the task of offering our kids the opportunity of purchasing a Fathers’ Day present. The students had a ball choosing their gifts and are very excited to be presenting that gift come Sunday. To all the dads out there – we wish you a very happy Father’s Day!

NSW Department of Education and Communities Feet up all day – no lawn mowing – no wood chopping. Thank you Mrs Casey. On Friday, 16 September – (Week9) we will be joining in with the town celebration with our contribution to the “Back to Cowra” week. We would like to invite those good folk returning to Cowra and those who still reside here – to join us for a wander back through time and the opportunity of wandering through the school to see which things have changed and that which remains unchanged. Our teachers would like to welcome you to wander into the classrooms and reminisce about your time here at Cowra PS. Our teachers and kids are expecting visitors during our Open School (11:30 – 1:00 pm for classroom visits) and you are most welcome to join us for a BBQ sausage Sizzle from 1pm. At 2:00pm we will be celebrating our major school assembly where kids will be receiving awards and a selection of senior students will be presenting their prepared public speeches. You are most welcome to join us for this special assembly. Our playground behaviour this past week has been outstanding with students showing regard for one another and demonstrating the outstanding behaviour that is expected of students at this school. I place a great deal of emphasis on respectful behaviour in the playground and I am pleased that there has been an improvement of late. As I have often stated since my arrival – I have a very high expectation that students at this school will enter the gates each morning and feel safe, respected and have many opportunities to learn. Everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and it is everyone’s job at this school to ensure that happens – teachers, principal, executive leaders, support staff and students. Our PBL lesson this week is called “Visiting Teachers”. The lesson focus is on being prepared for having a different teacher on your class if the teacher is

away for professional development or is sick and unwell. It is important that our students learn that the expectations do not change when a visiting teacher (casual teacher) arrives for the day. It is important that the learning continues seamlessly. Our casual teachers are expected to follow the teaching program for the class they are teaching, and it is important that our students show the same level of good behaviour and respect as they ordinarily would. We specifically teach these skills so that the all important learning continues. We have some new students commencing school next week. I would like to take this opportunity of welcoming the new students to this great school and wish them all the very best as they settle into life here at Cowra PS. I’m very sure that they will find some new friends quickly and feel part of the furniture very soon. All the best! On Thursday, 15 and Friday, 16 September – we have the “rock climbing wall” visiting the school. As you are probably already aware – this event is scheduled as part of our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) program to acknowledge students who have demonstrated a preparedness to follow the school rules, show respect to others, behave appropriately in class. It is a wonderful experience and one which is not only very safe – but offers kids a terrific challenge. Steve Wilkinson Principal (Rlvg)
