Cowra Public School NEWS
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Next week is an exciting week for our students who have worked hard within our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) program and earned the privilege of participating in the climbing wall challenge. It is certainly an awful lot of fun and an opportunity for kids to “climb” out of their comfort zone and to attempt to achieve climbing to the very top of the wall. Some kids will make it all of the way to the top this year – some kids will make it half way – but however far you climb, you can be very proud that you have attempted to do something difficult and sometimes a bit scary. The company who offer the climbing wall experience are called “Base Zero”, and if you are interested you can find out more about the experience by visiting, www.basezero.com.au. Safety for this event is paramount. The base zero team are highly trained and will ensure all kids are safely strapped into the harness and will have a safety rope attached and monitored throughout their climb. I’m really looking forward to watching the kids grow in confidence with each attempt and hearing their “whoops” of delight as they conquer their fears and reach the top of the wall.

NSW Department of Education and Communities As I mentioned last week – we have the Back2Cowra event here at school on Friday next week where we will be joining in with the town celebration with our contribution to the “Back to Cowra” week. We would like to invite those good folk returning to Cowra and those who still reside here – to join us for a wander back through time and the opportunity of wandering through the school to see which things have changed and that which remains unchanged. Our teachers would like to welcome you to wander into the classrooms and reminisce about your time here at Cowra PS. Our teachers and kids are expecting visitors during our Open School (11:30 – 1:00 pm for classroom visits) and visitors are most welcome to join us for a BBQ sausage Sizzle from 1pm. At 2:00pm we will be celebrating our major school assembly where kids will be receiving awards and a selection of senior students will be presenting their prepared public speeches. You are most welcome to join us for this special assembly. One of things that has impressed me about this great school since my arrival has been the high standard of the school uniform. Not only is it a very smart and well presented uniform, it is clearly worn with a great deal of pride by the students of this school. I was particularly impressed by the number of kids choosing to wear the school tie. It really finishes off the uniform perfectly and looks “a million dollars”. I want to thank our families for supporting our school uniform so proudly. It is clear to me that we are a very proud school with a long and distinguished tradition in this town. Long may this continue. As the weeks have gone by this term, I have had more and more students coming through my office door to show me examples of the fine work they are doing in class. It is truly one of the great pleasures of being Principal that I am able to see first-hand the myriad of great things our students achieve. I have been enormously proud of the great work our teachers do at this school and equally impressed with the standard of work our

students are producing. Our PBL lesson this week involves teaching our kids about telling the truth. Sometimes the best way to get the message across is through famous quotes. I did a google search this morning and I stumbled across these random quotes from famous people: “Anyone who doesn't take truth seriously in small matters cannot be trusted in large ones either.” - Albert Einstein; “Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.” – Buddha; “If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.” - Mark Twain; “Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth.” - Mahatma Gandhi. I also found an article online which stated the top two reasons to be truthful are: ◦1. Trust. In order to be successful in anything, a person must have a reputation of honesty. ◦2. Good Health. People who tell the truth are healthier. They have less concern, less stress and feel better about themselves. This has to translate into better health. The advice I give to my own children is simple: people are known by their honesty and truthfulness. Next week is Week 9 so there are only two weeks remaining in this term. It is amazing how quickly time can fly when you are busy. Term 4 is always a busy and fun time of the year as we count down to Christmas and the festive season. I wish everyone a happy final two weeks of term. Our Year six kids have the sum total of twelve weeks left in Primary school. The transition to high school has commenced and it has been a great success so far. Moving from the primary setting to the high school setting is a big deal, and we hope that our students enjoy the experience of preparing for high school. I’d like to thank the staff at Cowra HS for their terrific efforts in assisting our students with the big move.

DEVELOPING RESILIENCE It has been shown that school connectedness, peer connectedness and teacher c o n n e c t e d n e s s a re significant factors in encouraging resilience. Faced with challenges of our fast-paced world, our young people need to be resilient to not only be successful but also to survive and thrive. When students have a sense of belonging to a good school, are part of a friendship group and have teachers who care about their wellbeing and academic progress, the conditions are ideal for developing the personal coping skills that build resilience. At our school the qualities of a resilient school are very evident in our commitment to PBL, providing a safe caring and encouraging environment; our weekly lessons in every class about positive behaviour and learning; our opportunities for student leadership and involvement and our commitment to offer a range of lunch time activities to encourage and support students efforts to build positive connections with their peers in a social setting. Have you ever asked your daughter or son what they did at lunch time, and received the reply ‌ nothing? There is nothing to do! Well at CPS there is a number of activities to encourage your child to be involved with: In primary- games club, chess club (Term 4), drama club, art club (Friday), tent making, choir, library, park days for each year level, chalk drawing, gardening club, Boppy soccer (Tuesday only) sandpit and various sporting equipment available at lunch time. In Infants- Chalk board drawing, library, chess club (Term 4), art club (Friday- minus kinders), tent making, skipping lead by an adult, Boppy soccer (Thursday only), sandpit and various sporting equipment and areas to play at lunch time. Both Infants and Primary have a visual timetable posted around their outdoor areas so they can see which days these activities occur during the week. Sometimes these extra activities allow for opportunities to meet like minded peers or other students they have met before, or maybe just a place to go to get away and do their own thing for awhile. I would encourage you to talk with your child about things they can do to get involved at break time, to help them build their social-connectedness skills and therefore resilience.
