Cowra Public School NEWS 17 September 2016

Term 3, Week 9

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

NSW Department of Education and Communities

Dear Parents I am very pleased to inform you of a recent success two of our students experienced only yesterday. Mac Webster and Tyalah Munro placed first in the public speaking section of the Regional NAIDOC Public Speaking competition. “Song Lines for living Narrative of Our Nation”. The competition was fierce and the quality of speakers was astounding – improving each and every year. The State final is in Dubbo at the zoo in Week 4 and Mac and Tyalah have the opportunity of becoming overall public speaking champions for 2016. A big thank you to Dean Murray for his outstanding organisation of the event and Trish Long and Tori Gordon for their support and commitment to our superb team.

The rock climbing wall arrived today and our students had a wonderful time pitting their nerves and skills against the daunting challenge of climbing to the top. I was impressed by the bravery and skills demonstrated by our younger students. I’m pleased that our kids enjoyed themselves and were acknowledged for the outstanding behaviour at school. I had the opportunity of popping into the Cowra Show pavilion centre this week. I thought the Cowra PS exhibition was first class, very colourful and exhibited art work of the highest calibre. I’d like to thank our dedicated teachers who put the exhibition together and to the teachers and support staff who have manned our stall throughout the week. I note that the weather has made a stellar effort this year of attempting to wash out the event, though I hear the fireworks was a huge success and a sight to behold. Our PBL focus has been around the use of appropriate language at school. We encourage our students not to use bad language in the playground. We are actively teaching our kids to use polite, respectful and kind language when playing… or disagreeing. We are also having a big push on wearing the correct uniform. The no hat, play in the shade rule will be “policed” especially during the high UV spring and summer months. Wearing a hat is one way to avoid skin cancers later in life, so we encourage our students to help themselves by wearing their hat when playing.

Mac Webster, Tyahla Munro with the presenter, Luke Carroll from “Play School”. This Friday Mr McGill, Mr Hazell and myself will be manning the BBQ, offering our Back2Cowra visitors a terrific lunch. The school will be open for those interested in having a “walk back through time” between 11:30 and 1pm. Our major assembly will be held immediately following lunch and I am looking forward to handing out the many awards that our students have earned.

It is difficult to believe that we have reached the end of the second last week. This time next week our school will be preparing for the end of term and the kids will be off on their Term 3 break. I trust and hope that for the most part, this term has been a positive experience for your child here at Cowra PS. We are constantly looking at ways to improve the social and educational experience for the kids in our care. Later next term we will be surveying the kids and parents to find out the things we are doing well and the things that we need to improve on. Your feedback is one way that we can continue to improve and grow as a school – as well as being an opportunity to celebrate our successes. Thanks. Steve Wilkinson Principal (Rlvg)

~ PBL REWARD DAY ~ ROCK CLIMBING WALL Today and tomorrow the Rock Wall is visiting Cowra Public School. Over the two days every student will get the opportunity to test their fear of heights and climb to the top of the wall. Parents and friends are invited to come and see their children climb the wall and even have a go themselves. This activity is seen as the major PBL reward event of the year with the children all attempting the 5 metre wall. This event celebrates the achievements that the students have made in their understanding and application of the Positive Behaviour for Learning principles. At Cowra Public School all children are directed through weekly lessons on expectations of behaviour and fundamental life skills. The consistency of the PBL program across the school is a true testament to the strong values of care, guidance and well- being that are instilled into the children. WINNERS!!!! WESTERN REGION NAIDOC PUBLIC SPEAKING FINAL Despite a very late minute relocation of the Western Regional Final from Tottenham to Dubbo due to flooding, no amount of wet weather or floods could dampen the spirits of our NAIDOC public speaking team of Tyahla Munro and Mac Webster. The Lachlan Valley champions progressed to the regional final last Wednesday to compete for an opportunity to represent Western Region at the State NAIDOC Public Speaking Challenge in Term 4. The students displayed nerves of steel as they spoke to the theme of this year's NAIDOC week theme - 'Songlines: The Living Narrative of our Nation'. The standard of competition was very high, and we were treated to excellent speeches from Orange, Dubbo West, Cudgegong Valley, Holmwood, Wallerarang and Tullamore Public Schools. Of special mention was the outstanding effort from the Tullamore PS team, who were not able to get to Dubbo, but nonetheless presented their speech via video conference - it is very hard to deliver a speech to an audience miles away! Our team spoke beautifully and were commended for their clarity, diction and local content, and narrowly took out the title with Orange Public and Cudgegong Valley tied for second. There were only 10 points between the first and last competitors, so awaiting the adjudication was a nerve racking experience for all! Tyahla and Mac now go onto compete at the State Finals in Week 2 of Term 4, and I would like to thank the students for their ongoing commitment to this competition - they are proof that practice indeed makes perfect! Thanks also to the families of the students for driving the students to Dubbo and listening to the many, many hours of practise I know these students have completed outside of school time. P & C MEETING Tonight 6.00pm in staffroom WHAT IS THE P&C? P&C stands for Parents and Citizens, and Cowra Public School’s P&C Association meets once a month on Thursday evenings. The objective of the P&C is to provide parents, carers and concerned citizens an opportunity to discuss aspects of their child’s education with the school’s Principal and other staff. P&C’s are often seen by the wider community primarily as fund raising committees. Whilst there are many activities that the P&C engage in to raise funds for extras in the schools, our primary focus is providing parents with an avenue to constructively discuss any aspects of their child’s schooling with school staff. The P&C usually meet on the third Thursday of each month, and the next meeting is scheduled for Thursday 15 September (tonight) at 6.00 pm in the school staff room.
